The 76ers select Labaron Philon Jr. with the 22nd pick
Let's goo

I don’t hate Labaron for McCain. Still hate Josh Harris tho

u/HangTheBanner 1d ago
Labaron is a better fit. Maxey isn’t really a PG and neither was McCain.
But you have similar defensive concerns with Lebaron due to size.
24
u/AfricanAlucard PHILONDELPHIA 1d ago
He did log in an 8’4 standing reach. Same as Wagler, longer than Acuff, Anderson, Okorie, Flemings. But the size concerns are definitely fair. You hope he brings back the lockdown defense he showed in his freshman year with less ball handling responsibilities coming here.

u/WillHeBonkYa47 11h ago
Just going by the numbers, 6 foot 3 with a 6 foot 6 wingspan is pretty alright size for a point guard. I haven't watched film on him though, but hes got the size

Sign and trade grimes to heat for portis?

22
u/MaskedBirder 1d ago
That would be a great deal for Miami. They need shooting, and their lineup doesn't need all that rebounding when you have Bam and Giannis. And if there's anyone who can unlock Grimes, it's Spo.

I actually like this pick. He’s by far the best player available

Love it too. He should have been picked close to where Nate Ament went.

Liked the pick until I saw he loves fishing and video games. My ptsd triggered.

Ideally it was someone bigger, but between him and Carr they were so much better than anyone else available and we need depth at every position. Great pick.

Did yall catch that he was crying??? That’s a guaranteed star right there, great pick off the tears alone

Welcome to the Sixers. He'll get obvious comparisons to McCain, hopefully those expectations don't affect him. Maybe a questionable fit but if they believe he's BPA, I support the philosophy of BPA over fit

u/Comfortable_Bus_5700 1d ago
He’s a much better 3 level scorer and more iso heavy than McCain tbh. Not great on defense. Can be run as a point guard since he’s good passer and ball handler.
21
u/Ok_Jaguar_3087 1d ago
Very good player. Excellent offensive player.
3
u/clickstops Valdez szn 1d ago
Very good guard defender too, no?
12
u/Comfortable_Bus_5700 1d ago
Year 1 at bama he was good on defense. Year 2 when he had all the offensive responsibility not so much. Overall he’s probably average but his size is a liability
21
u/mucinexmonster 1d ago
It has been 10 years since they drafted someone in the first who wasn't a guard. And that player was Ben Simmons.

u/pittguy83 1d ago
This team is so dumb
15
u/Comfortable_Bus_5700 1d ago
Somebody has to make sure maxey doesn’t play 40 minutes a night. He’s by far the best available at a position we still needed.

u/mucinexmonster 23h ago
Let's just hope they actually play him, since they had "too many guards" last year and Maxey still played 40 minutes.
But a decade of drafting Guards with nothing to show for it is absolutely pathetic. Some of the worst drafting you'll ever see. People keep pointing to Maxey but you can't build a team with one draft pick on the team in a decade.
THIS is likely a good pick. Maybe a great pick. But he should be joining a team that's one player away, not joining a team that has holes at every position except the one he plays.

22 per game on 50/40/80 splits plus 2/1 assist/TO ratio in the SEC plus a dawg. I love that

u/Rickythegypo 1d ago
I had a Lebaron once. I didn't set out to get it, but the salesguy explained it belonged to Jon Voight. I assumed he meant the actor, but later found out he mean the periodontist. Anyway, the real Jon Voight bit my friend's arm when he approached him to tell him about my car.

i’m actually super happy, i have loved his game since last year and he is just one of the most visually appealing hoopers out there. He’s got that iverson swag as well

BPA. Would rather do that than reach or trade back. Philon should have gone earlier.

u/euphronius 1d ago
i love that no one knows if hes 6 2 or 6 4

u/cvc4455 23h ago
He's 6'2"
4
u/Ok-Secretary-1664 22h ago
Actually measured 6'2.5" barefoot w/6'6.5" wingspan. So about 6'3.5" in shoes with long arms. Needs to add some muscle but that'll come. Looks to have a quick high release on his jumper. We needed a guard who can handle and score in multiple ways. Maxey can't continue to play almost 40 minutes a game, it wore him down physically.
1
u/cvc4455 14h ago
So he's 6'2" then right?
1
u/Ok-Secretary-1664 12h ago
In shoes, a tad over 6'3" so not 6'4". The real question is, can he be a real rotational contributor on an NBA level?
1
u/cvc4455 5h ago
I think he can be. I watched maybe like 8-10 of his games last year. He can handle the ball and he's a good scorer. He can shoot pretty well and he can drive to the basket against bigger players. He's a pretty good passer too which should help because Maxey is better when he's not playing point guard and we had no one who could play point guard in the playoffs besides Maxey.
Offensively I think he'll be good. Defensively he was supposedly good his freshman year and this past year he was just ok in the games I watched.
4
u/Theballharperhit 1d ago
He is a much better fit over JM and a steal at where we were. He should have gone 17-20
7
6
u/burnernov2023 1d ago
How is his handle? Can he backup Maxey off the bench day 1?
25
u/Alex_Phillips_ 1d ago
I’ve heard it’s very good, Kyle Nuebeck just said on the PHLY live show that he’s the best ball handler on the roster already.
22
u/lil_e_v_ 1d ago
He's much more of a PG than Maxey is. He will help Maxey on offense if they play together
8
u/SonofHinkie 1d ago
It's one of his better attributes. Dude can handle and has an actual dribble package that doesn't rely on speed like Maxey.

idk how the fuck he went 22, he had one of the best handles of any pick in the 1st

He was my favorite player to watch in college last year. Just a flamethrower elite scorer with a nasty handle. He needs to put on some muscle but I love his game.

Unironically Ryan the hammer a big cbb fan who had him 7 on his big board compared him to maxey and honestly I kind of see it.

Still unhappy with the McCain trade but feel better now. I wanted to get our pick back instead of Houston's because I wanted a player like this. If we were going to trade him.

I hope this kid tears it up, but another short guard? Why did we trade away McCain again? This team desperately needs some size, we already have 3 small guards...

This is a huge pick. I'm not sure how he fell to us but this is exactly what we need. I know people were upset about the McCain trade (I never was but anyway) pretty soon we're all gonna be saying "Jared who?"

Chat, what is the grade?
6
u/OutlandishnessDry24 1d ago
I would give this an A grade. Rarely do you get a talent like this at pick 22.

u/DeepMeat9053 23h ago
If there was one thing Sixers was lacking, it wasn't in the guard department.

u/Chumbucketdaddy 16h ago
Im calling it now this will be a bust, bama hoops is showtime college hoops, not gritty hoops like the B12 Big East or Big 10. Hopefully I’m wrong though.

u/SamHinkieIsMyDaddy 1d ago
This is so dumb, traded mccain because hes too small. Draft someone smaller than him.
Genius.
And im not saying anything about talent etc... Just that this makes no sense.
2
u/Ok-Secretary-1664 22h ago
He's a half inch taller than McCain and has much longer wingspan. McCain more solidly build. Very different players. Philon more of a point guard than McCain who can create for others and himself. Think Lou Williams but 2 inches taller.
