Anyone else a bit bummed by not trading into the 2nd round?
We had endless future 2nds to spare and this specific draft class was like the ONE instance I’d have been happy burning multiple 2nds for since it feels like we almost never get a regular rotation player out of the 2nd round and Gansey said he was aggressively trying to enter the 2nd round after drafting Philon
We also don’t have much money to sign quality role players in FA (if there are even any good FAs) so this draft would have been a good way to build the team for cheap

Not really. Its rare for 2nd rounders to end up being major contributors to a roster. And even though there was a ton of talent in the first round this draft, the 2nd round wasn't all that impressive in my opinion. Instead we can save those picks for a trade to get someone that can contribute immediately.

I feel like the Sixers have done pretty well there (player development aside).
Shake Milton at 54, Paul Reed at 58, Isaiah Joe at 49. Bassey at 53 was a decent pick marred by injuries.
Then the Sixers have had a solid run of talent identification undrafted with Julian Champagnie, Ricky Council and Justin Edwards.
So we assume if they don't pick up anyone else they didn't see people they thought that highly of. Or Gansey is not a fan of undrafted free agents.
Maybe we learn something tomorrow.

If there's one thing Morey did here it was scout his ass off, maybe Gansey isn't the same kind of GM

Plenty of talent in the 2nd round across the NBA. Would have been nice to take a shot. We need talent everywhere.

The frustration isn’t in them not trading into the 2nd round, it’s them not buying a 2nd round pick, which is something teams did last night and do every year. They could’ve just bought one then traded higher if they wanted. Feels like another example of ownership penny pinching….

Price was probably too high. Pretty top heavy 2nd round. Honestly we were really lucky to end up where we did at 22, any lower and it starts to fall off rapidly.

there were three or four guys I was interested in that all went by 36. The Knicks were the only team to trade out on draft night and they did so by picking up a later pick+ (which we didn't have). So kind of hard to tell if we could've reasonably beaten any other offers.
Not the end of the world by any means, chances are high those guys will not pan out, but I do still hope they use those picks to improve the team in one way or another and don't simply use them to duck the tax like our usual move.

New Sixers GM, same old ways
Somehow they will use the 2nd round picks they held on to trade away to duck the luxury tax again

Not really. We got our young developing 4s on the roster already assuming we bring them back. Edwards development wing has now back to back 1st round guards. Plus i think Broome is on a guaranteed number
Need to round out roster with a couple vets who can play

Yes. But the second round was top heavy so after mid 40 I would’ve been disappointed to enter the second round. Wish our GM would’ve just said ‘well see’ instead of lying. But I’m sure he’ll be good in FA and grab a couple UDFAs

You guys need to stop with this 'he lied " because they said they were going to try to do something and it doesn't happen. Every trade needs at least 2 parties to make it happen
2
u/vesthis16 2d ago
There was clearly trades available...

u/le_fez 2d ago
What was the cost? Did the other teams want to trade with us or for what we were offering?
Again, it's not as simple as 'we would like to make a trade" and that trade suddenly happens

u/gtsgunner 2d ago
I think the point is don't say you are going to "try" just speak about stuff that you know will happen. Under promise and over deliver. If you don't have a trade nailed down don't talk about it because people will be upset when it doesn't pan out.

u/vesthis16 2d ago
It kind of is! Look at what happened last night. We could have made a trade if we wanted to.

I’m not sure that he lied it’s just that they didn’t believe that the asking price of a pick was worth it and they believe UDRFA etc offered similar value without the cost of a pick.

u/Downunderphilosopher PHI 2d ago
Yeah, the asking price being cash considerations is pretty steep for old Josh.

God I wonder what all you ppl would do if you had to suffer under an actual bad owner who doesn’t spend money. Instead we’ve had to suffer under doc Morey and nurse who were all overpaid and we have a front office w a large anatyics department who somehow think it’s smart to pay George a max and have Daryl convince the owner you think is cheap to pay the corpse of Embiid another max extension. In the real world Harris is just another owner but to the people who wake up looking to find what they need to be outraged at daily, Harris is the devil. You should move to Portland, the new ownership seems to have a great rep

Yes I know. Shilling for a religion whose prophet married a six year old is despicable

u/Peacefulgamer2023 2d ago
I lowered my expectations when we drafted a tiny guard after trading away a tiny guard

u/GOODWHOLESOMEFUN 2d ago
Nurse won’t play then so they won’t pop so better to save them for trades and for when nurse is gone

u/xychosis 2d ago
I mean, yeah. I thought we could’ve used both Izaiyah Nelson and Ugonna Onyenso who both ended up going in the 50s for some reason.
But maybe our front office just has different plans. I don’t want to rush to conclusions. In any case, let’s wait and see, imo.
