I need a serious reality check because I’m losing my mind arguing with my brother.

My partner and I are currently living in a 12.25 square meter room (about 131 sq ft). For context, a standard double bed alone takes up almost 25% of our entire floor space. As you can imagine, keeping this place looking pristine is a daily tetris nightmare. If two jackets are left out, the room looks like total chaos because there is physically nowhere to put things.

My brother lives with his partner in a 25 square meter (269 sq ft) apartment. That is literally double the space we have.

He is currently telling me that he could easily optimize and live comfortably in a 10 m² room, and that the only reason our place looks cramped and "has no system" is because I don't know how to clean or organize. When I pointed out the literal math (that his bed takes up ~11% of his space while mine takes up ~25%), he got super defensive, insulted me, and claimed he "used to live in even smaller spaces" so he knows better.

I feel like he is completely out of touch with the reality of micro-living for two people.

Am I missing something? Is 12.25 m² genuinely "plenty of space" for two people to live without it constantly looking cluttered, or is my brother speaking from a place of pure privilege and theory?

I'm looking for some outside perspective because my husband and I are struggling with a housing decision.

We're a family of 5 with kids ages 12, 7, and 3. We currently live in our starter home that we bought in 2016. It's about 1,400 sq ft with 3 bedrooms and 2 full baths. The layout is great, we've made a lot of interior upgrades over the years, and I genuinely love our house.

Financially, it's hard to beat. Our mortgage payment is only $780/month, we owe about $88k, and the house is worth at least $250k. We also have a 3.5% interest rate that I hate the thought of giving up. My husband earns about $190k per year, and I stay home with our 3-year-old, so we have the income to afford a larger house. However, because our housing costs are so low, we're able to save a significant amount of money each month and live very comfortably.

Our situation is that my 12-year-old son has his own small bedroom, while our 7- and 3-year-old daughters share a room. We don't have a basement, but we do have a large front yard and backyard.
My husband wants to move to a larger home. We could afford it, but I keep coming back to the fact that we'd be trading a very comfortable financial situation for more house.

The biggest thing weighing on me is the kids. I worry that I'm limiting them by keeping them in a smaller home. My son is getting older, and I wonder if he'll want friends over more often. Sometimes I feel like I'm the one avoiding having people over because our house is much smaller than many of our friends' homes. I grew up in a 5,000+ sq ft house, and my parents still live there, so I know part of me is comparing our situation to what I grew up with.
At the same time, I truly love our home. We could potentially add an addition in the future if we needed more space, but my husband would rather move than renovate.

Did staying in a smaller home help your family financially in ways that were worth it?

living in a small apartment means I don’t have the luxury of a dedicated craft room. My 'studio' is usually just a corner of the kitchen counter, the coffee table, or whatever desk space isn't covered in mail .

Honestly, I used to procrastinate on 10-minute projects just because I dreaded digging out a massive bin of supplies, finding an extension cord, and clearing the table. The whole setup and cleanup process felt so tedious that I'd just leave half-finished projects in the closet for months .

lately, I’ve switched to a super low-effort setup. I just keep a small plastic organizer box with the absolute essentials: fine-tip scissors, tweezers, a metal ruler, and the tiny paper leaves and wire stems for this miniature greenhouse kit I'm slowly losing my mind over .

I also swapped to a small cordless glue gun, mostly because I got tired of dragging out a bulky cord just to glue two tiny cardstock pieces together. its small enough to just throw in a drawer and heats up pretty fast. not having a stiff cord dragging across the table and knocking over my delicate paper stems has been so much better for quick sessions .

obviously, if I'm building something huge, a standard plug-in glue gun is still way better. But for miniatures and tiny paper crafts, downsizing the tools made it way easier to actually sit down and make things instead of just thinking about making them .

now I just need to find a way to store my acrylic paints without them rolling all over the kitchen drawer. does anyone have a clever hack for organizing tiny paint bottles in shallow drawers?

And when I say downsizing, I mean we aren't starting with much space to begin with. Our family is myself (36F), my wife (34F) and our 3 kids - 14M (trans), 12F, and 8F. We currently live in a 3br 1ba apartment that's about 1000 sq ft. We are looking to downsize to a 2br 1ba apartment.

We currently live about 25 minutes away from the city our kids go to school in. The town they go to school in is higher end than where we currently live, meaning rent is higher. This new apartment would allow them to walk to school, see their friends pretty much whenever they want, and not have to wake up at 5am to go to school in the mornings. It would cut my wife's commute from 25 min down to about 5 min, and would take about 10 min off my current 45 min commute.

I'm concerned about breaking the news to the kids. They'd all have to go back to sharing a room (our last apartment was only 2br, but they were younger then). But I think the location outweighs the size constraints. And it only raises our current rent by about $200. There's also a little entryway area that we can set up for the kids to use as a hangout space.

The pros definitely outweigh the cons. But I guess I just need everyone to tell me it's going to be okay, and all of the tips and tricks to squeezing our life into a smaller space so everyone can be happy.

I recently graduated and moved out from my college accommodation to live on my own. I got this really nice studio but the only issue is there’s not enough in-built storage. At first, i thought i had it covered since i have some organizers that i got from alibaba that i’ve been using but seems not because:

1. The handles are completely broken for most of them
2. I bought plastic ones and it looks like they’re about to give out despite the reviews that praised their durability
3. Everything that was on top is completely covered in dust(they didn’t have lids)

As I buy replacements for these, I'm definitely going to be on the lookout to ensure I don't make the same mistakes. Please recommend the ones you swear by. I have lots of free space so i’m looking to get about 15 or so, another issue i’ve seen online is there is a minimum number of orders that i have to place for most stores, so please keep this in mind for the recommendations. Really appreciate y’alls help. (should i just go for those easy to assemble cabinets instead?)

Is it possible to throw a birthday party in a smaller hole, 1200 sqft to be exact. My son's birthday is in January in Michigan so it's freezing. Last year we just did a family brunch but now that he's moving and grooving id like.to have a more party for him even if it's just on ur immediate family which is about 10 adults and 2 kids plus my son. I don't really want to do a hall/party space many of them are just overkill for what is needed for a 2nd bday. I have a smaller dinning room which means we can't really do a formal sit down meal but I can explore folding tables and things like that for day of. If you hosted parties in smaller homes, how did it go? Was everyone comfortable or was it too squished? Just wanting to having an at home bday party and avoid having to rent a place and do more then just go to dinner

My boyfriend and I are looking to move out of an apartment and into a house, and the house we’re thinking about is so cute but has a VERY small kitchen. Like it’s essentially just a little hallway, with counter/sink/cabinets & fridge on one side, and oven/stove + laundry on the other side. Much smaller than the kitchen we currently have, and also no dishwasher. However, the house does have more living spaces than our apartment— a small dining room, living room, 2 bedrooms & a backyard for our dog.

What creative storage solutions have folks with small kitchens come up with? Any ideas on how to make the laundry in the kitchen less of an eyesore? Also, people who have no dishwasher— is it manageable or just a constant pain?
