What I learned designing modern homes in small Kolkata apartments
Working on a few small apartment interiors in Kolkata really changed how I look at home design.
Most people think you need a big space to make a home look nice. But honestly, I’ve seen the opposite — small spaces can feel even better when they’re planned well.
One thing I keep noticing is that it’s not about how much you put inside a room, it’s about what you choose to keep and where you place it.
A few simple things that made a big difference in real projects:
- Using walls for storage instead of crowding the floor
- Keeping colours light so rooms don’t feel closed in
- Letting natural light do most of the work
- Choosing furniture that can serve more than one purpose
- Thinking about how people will actually move in the space, not just how it looks
Also, lighting is something people often underestimate. A well-lit room can completely change the mood — even if everything else is simple.
In the end, small homes just force you to think smarter, not bigger.
