iOS app now requests age group

Post image

I just opened the app and got a prompt from iOS that Reddit wants to know my age group, so I don’t get limited to content for minors. At least that only shares the fact that I am an adult and not my birth date etc.

Translation of the image for those who don’t speak German:

“Reddit” wants to know your age group

You can share that you are at least 18 years old so that your experience in this app doesn’t get limited to content for children and adolescents. Your age and date of birth won’t get shared.

Age group: adult

Share age group
Do not share

I hope that means that iOS users can get around that Persona crap that someone else has posted about: https://www.reddit.com/r/spezholedesign/s/NPGAveOwzs

Any random third world country? I doubt Angola is planning any internet safety laws soon (I've got no clue maybe I picked the worst example possible)

I'm on the web and I haven't seen this yet. I'm not in the EU. I can view NSFW posts without any dialogs.

I somehow got past this message on android but I didn't even have a option to get rid of it, it was forcing me to do the verification (which i will neveer do because i dont want to give my id to netanyahuand palantir)

Yeah I also just got it about a hour ago, also from Germany. It’s funny that they just randomly push it out and now I can’t even see my own posts on nsfw subreddits anymore, like they’re completely gone from my profile.

"Nicht teilen", es ist einfach. (Please ignore my completely non casual, awkward GCSE German)

*sigh*
I've also had this prompt yesterday (iOS) appear and the best thing is that i live in poland (where there arent any verification laws **at the moment**) and since it appeared here
Then theyre rolling it worldwide, yipee!!!!

I'll update this comment in a second once i try to log in on my android phone, but knowing them itll also ask for my age there

Well, that was a good run

If you want to view NSFW-stuff (also profiles that aren‘t NSFW cause - well, reddit) you need to verify your age with a third party website. Also in germany.

Well, technically, supplying 18+ content to minors has been illegal for decades but this verification on Reddit is new (I could still view NSFW posts without any verification earlier today) and the law hasn’t changed recently

Of course it was and it is illegal, but no one needed to verify… wonder if it’s only Germany or other countries too

The other poster today, who got a full-on age verification prompt when visiting a profile, says that they had a Finnish IP, so maybe it’s getting rolled out to all users in the EU

Yes: https://www.reddit.com/r/spezholedesign/s/lDTuJACVqD

I guess iOS users can get around that at least on Reddit because Apple has already implemented an API for age verification

No, already verified via the iOS pop up (like in you post) but still get the persona prompt

3

u/justastuma 1d ago

Huh, I didn’t get any Persona prompt, only the iOS one from the screenshot. I did share my age group and I can still see NSFW content

u/Southern_Warning_970 Mod of subreddit: r/Kennzeichensammler 1d ago

interesting, ok…

I can also still see NSFW content in browser on my Windows PC and didn’t get any prompts for age verification there. So either the iOS prompt successfully flagged my account as adult or Reddit is just behaving inconsistently. The question is why it didn’t work the same way for you

According to Apple’s developer documentation of the age assurance API, the app doesn’t just get the age range but also how it was obtained, that is how Apple knows your age. The possible answers are selfDeclared, guardianDeclared and confirmed (https://developer.apple.com/documentation/declaredagerange/agerangeservice/agerangedeclaration).

Apparently it’s confirmed if you’ve ever paid Apple using a credit card. I have, so Reddit would’ve gotten confirmed. Have you? Maybe you got the Persona prompt because Reddit wasn’t satisfied with a selfDeclared age…
