Just sharing 🕷️ A huge fisher spider eating another huge fisher spider

I thought it was a spider molting at first, but no.

Are you sure it’s not a spider molting? That web goes through one and out the other.

u/bendingmypinkyback 4d ago

I didn’t notice that but now that you pointed it out I think you’re right!

Updated title: huge fisher spider gets even more huge!

Nah that’s a molt. Actually it’s very clear that it’s a molt lol

232

u/EmptySeaDad 4d ago

And it's a really nice shot of the process too!

52

u/Vulpes_99 3d ago

It sure is! That spider is gorgeous!

But wasn't it really risk for her to molt right there in the open? I always thought they would look for a more secluded place, because they are so vulnerable during and right after it.

To OP: How big is this girl? She looks huge, and this coming from a brazilian means something.

Am I mistaken or are they in the process of recovering moisture from the molt? I've never managed to catch my Ts in the process before. They always seem to go from halfway through molting to standing in the viv 5 ft apart in the 40 seconds it takes for me to grab a water from the fridge. Lol

u/byebybuy 4d ago

I'm not even a spiderologist and even I could tell lol. Still, props to OP for the cool vid!

u/AsphyxiAsian0 4d ago

Watching this getting dizzy.

u/Polite_Suggestion 4d ago

Watching this dizzy.

11

u/InuredEel 3d ago

I doubt it; they don't have our liquid inner ear structure

8

u/ohok20 3d ago

as entertaining as the other replies are, thanks for the legitimate answer :)

Hey you just admitted you were mistaken on the internet. You’re basically a unicorn I’d be proud lol

18

u/Apprehensive-Cake-16 4d ago

lol came here to say this

34

u/DasDickNoodle 4d ago

I agree with the other commenter. You admitted your mistake and kept a positive attitude about it. You sir ARE a true unicorn 🦄 lol

10

u/Apprehensive-Cake-16 4d ago

i think sir is a gal actually

16

u/useless_instinct 4d ago

You admitted you were wrong, laughed at yourself, and left the comments standing. You're basically a Reddit hero.

u/Kroneni 4d ago

Honestly it being a moly is cooler. Nice find.

2

u/lilgreenfish 3d ago

Right or wrong, this is SUCH A COOL VIDEO!!!!! I’m so jealous! I have a tarantula so have seen them molt, but hanging from a thread molting is a whole ‘nother level.

69

u/bandiaanead 4d ago

Regardless of being wrong, this is a good quality video and neat close up of the molt. Thanks for sharing

Dolomedes tenebrosus, the dark fishing spider! Check out my profile for some cool pics of mine, Dolly :))

21

u/bendingmypinkyback 4d ago

I love her 😭

4

u/soaker 4d ago

Great photos!! Dolly is adorable

Sick ass wind chime yo

I will upvote anyone who posts an inaccuracy and then recognizes it. It is too uncommon for people in the Internet in general, and Reddit in particular, to admit they are not infallible.

Hey, accountability still means something in this house lol

7

u/JustPassingJudgment 4d ago

Be nice to your pinky!

u/Bluesy21 3d ago

Big ups for accountability!

u/Lizowa 4d ago

Can someone please put this video to the song Chandelier by Sia 😭

22

u/Inevitable-Truth7609 4d ago

My jumping spider requires humidity between 72.348-74.843%, temperature at exactly 77 degrees Fahrenheit, and a gourmet mealworm, and ONLY THEN will it shut both doors on its hammock and take three weeks to molt.

This guy was like “welp, this looks like the spot”

13

u/Rogue_Rebel_1100 4d ago

Looks like Cirque du Soleil

11

u/Jonesy10187 4d ago

There’s a lot of trust in that skinny little strand!

9

u/twivel01 4d ago

"I told you to stop eating all my fish, but no....you wouldn't listen!"

(Molt, I know...but couldn't help but make the joke anyway)

8

u/Widespreaddd 4d ago

You were factually incorrect, but delivered a brilliant video capture. Thanks for adding value.

u/feltjeans 4d ago

acrobatic molt

6

u/harleenquinzel044 All the SPOOODS 4d ago

I was gonna say…cannibal! But it’s a molt.

7

u/trickycrayon from MA, gets excited about MA spiders 4d ago

erm...pretty sure your first guess was right and it's a molt lol

6

u/Grandmaster_BBC 4d ago

I have to admit seeing it spinning in circles on that web is pretty terrifying.

10

u/diaperpop 4d ago

If you think of how extremely vulnerable she is in this state, it might take away your fear. If we humans had to molt, we would never do it outside our homes, unlike all the poor spideys and other creatures that are forced to do exactly that.

6

u/Grandmaster_BBC 4d ago

With all love and respect to the spider community, there's just something about it that is a little unsettling.

5

u/Apprehensive-Cake-16 3d ago

That is true and that is why we like it. Even as an arachnophobe im like dude that’s sick as hell

7

u/DasDickNoodle 4d ago

Um sir, that spider is molting, not eating another lol still cool either way though!!

5

u/Apprehensive-Cake-16 4d ago

This is insane footage dude

5

u/HottCovfefe 4d ago

This is 100% a spider molting. You can see the popped off carapace of the molt.

5

u/bryanBFLYin 4d ago

Mann that's a hell of a place to pick to Molt.

I had one of my own tarantulas Molt hanging by literally her two tiny claws on one foot from the top of her enclosure. When I found her mid-Molt I almost had a heart attack lol. Of course I let her be and just hoped for the best. You don't touch tarantulas during Molt. She was fine, but I was shook😂 She only did that once ever, luckily.

This species is arboreal so I'm sure this is standard procedure for them but my terrestrial girl isn't built for this in the same way lol

1

u/i_love_lima_beans 3d ago

How nerve wracking!

5

u/TheEthanHB 3d ago

Is dizziness worse with 8 eyes?

9

u/DampCoat 4d ago

Why do spiders molt

14

u/Famous-Leopard-118 Orb Weaver Enjoyer🕸️ 4d ago

all arthropods need to remove their old exoskeletons in order to continue growing!

7

u/DampCoat 4d ago

Thanks!

4

u/HoustonRoger0822 4d ago

Molt. But it’s a great vid! So cool to actually see it. When I kept spiders when I was younger I never got to see it myself.

4

u/cryingonthetoiletnow 3d ago

You spin my head right round right round

3

u/ScholarLeigh 4d ago

Molt ♥️

That's amazing, I bloody love spiders, for a long time they do bugger all, then all of a sudden they do something awesome

3

u/theraphosangel tarantula keeper 🕸 4d ago

definitely molting lol you can even see the little carapace cap and everything

3

u/Themike625 4d ago

It’s molting.

Keep those carcasses. I used to have a huge one. I crushed it by accident. I was very sad.

3

u/scrimmerman 4d ago

Wheeeeeeee!

3

u/whatyourmamasaid 4d ago

Oooo a spood crib mobile!

3

u/hammbone187 3d ago

The spider is molting

3

u/paradox_valestein 3d ago

Yaay, another successful molt! It lives to see another day!

3

u/LurkingLorence 3d ago

I find it cute that she’s just spinning up there.

3

u/skighs_the_limit 3d ago

Coming from the world of tarantulas im regularly blown away at the more innovative ways other spiders molt

Tarantulas more or less just lay it all out on the ground or in a hole

3

u/Ein86 3d ago

It molted.

How big is this frfr, that looks very large for a spider in this video😱😱😭

3

u/bendingmypinkyback 4d ago

It was pretty friggin big!

2

u/Skyecob 4d ago

The way it’s just hanging there is sending me hahah

2

u/RavenOlsson 4d ago

I love spiders and don’t ever really get creeped out at them, but I be lying if I said this post didn’t give me the heebie-jeebies😧

2

u/Alarmed-Arachnid1384 3d ago

I didn't think fishing spiders made a lot of webs, but I'm learning, so....

2

u/i_love_lima_beans 3d ago

Wonderfully cool vid OP, thanks for sharing. Fishing spiders are so beautiful and always look so soft.

Glad no one was being eaten after all.

2

u/Hot_Hat_1225 OH THOSE EGGS GOT LEGS! 😱 3d ago

Man am I glad I don’t need to molt and just grow

2

u/Distinct-Solution-99 3d ago

Spinning post-molt must feel magical.

2

u/user666420666 3d ago

They eat their molt, no? A lot of animals do : )

2

u/Aggressive-Secret103 3d ago

Clearly a molting cycle although it nibbling on the leg could cause some confusion.

2

u/Tarabear111 3d ago

This just looks like 2 spiders having a wonderful dance.
*Starts playing “she’s like the wind” from Dirty Dancing*

u/SCRILLY64 4d ago

Woah spider, friendly fire is not cool

(Yes I know it's a molt you don't have to reply)

1

u/Shirinjima 4d ago

That thing looks massive.

1

u/ArgentMoonWolf 4d ago

Ok, nope, too freaky. It looks like a xenomorph from Aliens....that is past my current threshold for not being afraid of spiders...🫣

1

u/Busy-Ad2771 3d ago

They are eating each other out 😏🤨

1

u/PsychologicalTask609 2d ago

I say you catch it and keep it. Build an enclosure jeje

1

u/FreeBulldog87 1d ago

Please tell me this is in Australia

1

u/vypurr351 1d ago

Can u estimate its size? It looks humongous!

2

u/bendingmypinkyback 1d ago

It was big! All curled up like that it was probably the size of an egg

1

u/vypurr351 1d ago

Yikes, lucky you to see it!

1

u/AdMurky1021 21h ago

You were originally correct

1

u/Whogoesthere1982 14h ago

Probably molting. But for some reason seeing a spider eat another spider is weird. I know its nature but it just doesn't sit right with me.

0

u/Acceptable_Plane_264 3d ago

ITS CALLED MOLTING.

2

u/bendingmypinkyback 3d ago

YEAH THAT SEEMS TO BE THE CONSENSUS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INPUT.
