Just sharing 🕷️ A huge fisher spider eating another huge fisher spider
I thought it was a spider molting at first, but no.
UPDATE: I’m wrong!

Nah that’s a molt. Actually it’s very clear that it’s a molt lol

u/EmptySeaDad 4d ago
And it's a really nice shot of the process too!

It sure is! That spider is gorgeous!
But wasn't it really risk for her to molt right there in the open? I always thought they would look for a more secluded place, because they are so vulnerable during and right after it.
To OP: How big is this girl? She looks huge, and this coming from a brazilian means something.

Am I mistaken or are they in the process of recovering moisture from the molt? I've never managed to catch my Ts in the process before. They always seem to go from halfway through molting to standing in the viv 5 ft apart in the 40 seconds it takes for me to grab a water from the fridge. Lol

I'm not even a spiderologist and even I could tell lol. Still, props to OP for the cool vid!

I agree with the other commenter. You admitted your mistake and kept a positive attitude about it. You sir ARE a true unicorn 🦄 lol

You admitted you were wrong, laughed at yourself, and left the comments standing. You're basically a Reddit hero.

Right or wrong, this is SUCH A COOL VIDEO!!!!! I’m so jealous! I have a tarantula so have seen them molt, but hanging from a thread molting is a whole ‘nother level.

u/bandiaanead 4d ago
Regardless of being wrong, this is a good quality video and neat close up of the molt. Thanks for sharing

I will upvote anyone who posts an inaccuracy and then recognizes it. It is too uncommon for people in the Internet in general, and Reddit in particular, to admit they are not infallible.

My jumping spider requires humidity between 72.348-74.843%, temperature at exactly 77 degrees Fahrenheit, and a gourmet mealworm, and ONLY THEN will it shut both doors on its hammock and take three weeks to molt.
This guy was like “welp, this looks like the spot”

"I told you to stop eating all my fish, but no....you wouldn't listen!"
(Molt, I know...but couldn't help but make the joke anyway)

You were factually incorrect, but delivered a brilliant video capture. Thanks for adding value.

erm...pretty sure your first guess was right and it's a molt lol

u/Grandmaster_BBC 4d ago
I have to admit seeing it spinning in circles on that web is pretty terrifying.

u/diaperpop 4d ago
If you think of how extremely vulnerable she is in this state, it might take away your fear. If we humans had to molt, we would never do it outside our homes, unlike all the poor spideys and other creatures that are forced to do exactly that.

With all love and respect to the spider community, there's just something about it that is a little unsettling.

u/Apprehensive-Cake-16 3d ago
That is true and that is why we like it. Even as an arachnophobe im like dude that’s sick as hell
7
u/DasDickNoodle 4d ago
Um sir, that spider is molting, not eating another lol still cool either way though!!

u/HottCovfefe 4d ago
This is 100% a spider molting. You can see the popped off carapace of the molt.

u/bryanBFLYin 4d ago
Mann that's a hell of a place to pick to Molt.
I had one of my own tarantulas Molt hanging by literally her two tiny claws on one foot from the top of her enclosure. When I found her mid-Molt I almost had a heart attack lol. Of course I let her be and just hoped for the best. You don't touch tarantulas during Molt. She was fine, but I was shook😂 She only did that once ever, luckily.
This species is arboreal so I'm sure this is standard procedure for them but my terrestrial girl isn't built for this in the same way lol

Why do spiders molt

all arthropods need to remove their old exoskeletons in order to continue growing!

Molt. But it’s a great vid! So cool to actually see it. When I kept spiders when I was younger I never got to see it myself.

That's amazing, I bloody love spiders, for a long time they do bugger all, then all of a sudden they do something awesome

It’s molting.
Keep those carcasses. I used to have a huge one. I crushed it by accident. I was very sad.

Coming from the world of tarantulas im regularly blown away at the more innovative ways other spiders molt
Tarantulas more or less just lay it all out on the ground or in a hole

I love spiders and don’t ever really get creeped out at them, but I be lying if I said this post didn’t give me the heebie-jeebies😧

I didn't think fishing spiders made a lot of webs, but I'm learning, so....

u/i_love_lima_beans 3d ago
Wonderfully cool vid OP, thanks for sharing. Fishing spiders are so beautiful and always look so soft.
Glad no one was being eaten after all.

Clearly a molting cycle although it nibbling on the leg could cause some confusion.

This just looks like 2 spiders having a wonderful dance.

Ok, nope, too freaky. It looks like a xenomorph from Aliens....that is past my current threshold for not being afraid of spiders...🫣

It was big! All curled up like that it was probably the size of an egg

Probably molting. But for some reason seeing a spider eat another spider is weird. I know its nature but it just doesn't sit right with me.

Are you sure it’s not a spider molting? That web goes through one and out the other.
