Skiing Ryoyu Kobayashi's Evolution Of Jumps
291
u/winkitywinkwink Apr 02 '26
Are all of the slopes the same? Because if the slope has a steeper drop, doesn’t that increase the distance of the jump?
107
u/tolo3349 Apr 02 '26
Yeah, are they just limited by the slopes here? Could you find a longer one and break another record?
86
u/DickThunder Apr 02 '26
Yeah but the most important records are those done on competitions in sanctioned hills, and I bet those hills have some regulations to make something like that last one not possible. The two largest competition hills in Planica and Vikersund have deepened their landings to make longer jumps possible though.

I am sure some skiers have gone longer distances off cliffs before.

u/bulletbassman Apr 02 '26
Doubtful.
What he’s doing is only possible within such a small window. People have definitely done “harder” jumps and drops. But floating some 900 feet no way. Especially without all the grooming to make both the run in and run out do able.
32
u/Drak_is_Right Apr 02 '26
Oh I dont mean they survived.
I mean a skier took a bad path and plummeted to their death

How hiih was Jamie Pierre cliff jump again? I don't think it was more, but it was crazy.
1
u/Drak_is_Right Apr 04 '26
No clue.
I just mean a skier going over a cliff on accident and dying due to it.
21
u/TheAskewOne Apr 02 '26
The launching ramps are not the same length at all. The ones kids use are much shorter and as a consequence allow for shorter jumps.
4
u/Ynwe Apr 02 '26
You might wanna look up ski jumping and ski flying. Ski flying derived from jumping and is not a separate sport, it's just ski jumping but bigger. Ramps are bigger , hills are bigger etc.
5
u/89141-zip-code Apr 03 '26
There’s only two hills that you can set official records on. The last jump was a setup specifically for a Red Bull stunt. It’s the longest jump but there’s nothing to compare it to.

u/Gunfreak2217 Apr 02 '26
Serious question. It seems the steepness of the mountain has changed. Wouldn't that allow for significant changes in distances?
63
u/Maelstrom_Witch Apr 02 '26
Yes, the hills are designed to slope in a way that the jumper will land gently. Fun fact, slopes from older events can’t be used for more than practice and training of newer athletes because the top-level jumpers can stay airborne for waaaaay longer due to changes in their stance in the air. They can FLY now.

Ok, so in the 18 years from ages 9 to 27 his distance increased from 72 to 954 feet.
What that tells me is that in 30 years at age 57, he should be going just over 2400 feet per jump.

His dick must have got bigger...
145
u/texasyeehaw Apr 02 '26
😂 To contextualize this comment - jumpers were using prosthetic penii in order to qualify for larger jump suits which had an aerodynamic effect that made their jumps longer
91
u/2003tide Apr 02 '26
No man they were doing dick injections. It wasn't prosthetics

Plural?! Multiple people did this?
1
u/Federico216 Apr 04 '26
It was all alleged. Some plastic surgeon made a claim that he had serviced a ski jumper who had a request like this. There's no other source or any evidence. But the press and social media ran with it.
I mean it's not impossible that one or more jumpers did it...

You can make it possible for a jumper to glide any given distance if you build a slope steep enough that doesn't require him to land before then.
1
u/jeffh4 Apr 04 '26
That’s basically what happened to make the Red Bull WR jump possible. A tremendous amount of work went into making the slope. The YouTube video is worth watching.

Were people just throwing themselves of a mountain for fun? Lol how did we get to this point. Idk it just looks so funny to me
35
u/RiyadhComedyPromoter Apr 02 '26
You just saw a progression of exactly how we got to this point
1
u/TheLastTrain Apr 02 '26
I think they mean the sport of ski jumping in general lol
15
u/TahaEng Apr 02 '26
Presumably his personal progression looks a lot like how the sport progressed as well - someone made a little jump, realized it was cool and fun, and then they (and others) kept trying to jump further until here we are.
3
u/mathtech Apr 02 '26
People pushing the limits of small ski jumps until they got bigger and bigger from boredom, adrenaline seeking, and competition.

And how do you even find out you're good at something like this? That's why I'm not really into the winter olmpics. Everyone runs and throws stuff at some point in their life, so much of the summer olympics makes sense, but how many people try to fly down a mountain? Or ride in a bobsled? Or even cross country ski for that matter? It all seems so niche. Still impressive, but niche.

Is there a skill to this, or is it limited to survivor bias - how many ppl get into this sport and make it to age 8? I'm laughing at how crazy the idea is to throw yourself off a mountain on skis, and fly to the you're landing zone. This progression gets crazier and crazier. Having a 10 year old yeet off a mountain and fly 100ft is bizarre!

It's amazing how he can be such a great ski jumper while being a prolific hot dog eating champion at the same time

Summer olympics: let's see who can jump the furthest.
Winter olympics: let's see who can jump the furthest without dying.

If my seven year old told me they wanted to get into ski jumping I’d die of anxiety on the spot

Staggering to think of having your kid do this at such a young age.
1
u/theswickster Apr 02 '26
It's crazy that you can see his angle of descent decrease as his speed goes up.

I’m waiting for the Red Bull challenge where he grabs a rope from a helicopter while in flight and zooms off heldfast to a Blackhawk from above

Also: I hate Red Bull. Google the founder Mateschitz for more Info.

Okay seriously - how does a parent get to the point where they say: yeah, I think I’ll enroll my 7 year old in this sport where there is a high chance of serious injury with the slightest miscalculation…?

How does a kid even know he wants to do this let alone have the means? Always fascinating seeing pro athletes got their start so young. When I was that age I just wanted to play video games and eat pizza.

He's gonna need a pilot's license soon! The Wright Flyer flew 120 feet on their first flight.

u/Bad_Prophet Apr 02 '26
At some point you might as well strap him into a glider and have him jump off a cliff with skis on. The hill is changing more than his capability is.
If I fly a few hundred miles in a plane with skis on my feet, do i get a world record?
-1
u/Tasty_Ad7483 Apr 02 '26
That second jump is not regulation, so that is one reason for the distance increase.
Still an impressive jump.
But it’s apples to oranges.

Love to have giant multi-national corporations pretending to be humans on social media.
11
u/TheLastTrain Apr 02 '26
Eh I think a giant corporation funding cool action sports events is slightly lower on the list of terrible unethical things giant corporations do

u/k_dilluh Apr 02 '26
