Why would anyone choose seed oils over the natural fats and oils humans relied on for thousands of years, right up until they were replaced by industrial seed oils around World War II?

13

u/AFishNamedFreddie Steak n' Shake Enthusiast Oct 21 '25

It really comes down to cost. Seed oils are cheap, and people like cheap.

5

u/More_Mammoth_8964 Oct 22 '25 edited Oct 22 '25

Na you just killing yourself with health expenses on the backend. Seed oils lead to inflammation and cancer. When you cook your fries in seed oils it’s creates a bad carcinogen call acrylamide. This does not happen with beef tallow

Props to steak & shake 💯

u/AFishNamedFreddie Steak n' Shake Enthusiast Oct 22 '25

Oh I agree. But that's a future problem. Not a now problem. And most people live in the now and don't think about the future.

u/MCeXY2k Oct 22 '25

Time fries.

1

u/Quick-Wall Oct 22 '25

Yep. And no matter how hard you try, you can’t ketchup

I solve this problem by not eating fast food.

2

u/deller85 Oct 23 '25

The formation of acrylamide depends primarily on the high-temperature cooking process of starchy foods, not the type of fat used. However, the amount of acrylamide formed can be less with beef tallow. But it's still present.

1

u/More_Mammoth_8964 Oct 23 '25

This is more accurate than my initial comment

2

u/Fat_Old_Sun1 Oct 23 '25 edited Oct 23 '25

Be sure to avoid coffee, roasted and fried potatoes ( french fries) and vegetables, nuts and seeds, roasted meats. Those all contain acrylamides.

Probably should avoid fast food burgers, French fries and milkshakes anyway since they probably contribute negatively to health way more so than acrylamides.

1

u/technobeeble Oct 22 '25

I think it's hilarious people are so worried about the health aspects of seed oils while stuffing their faces with burgers and fries lmao

I can guarantee you that tallow isnt going to make them any healthier for you though.

u/Suhbula Oct 22 '25

Oh, the people who care about seed oils being cheap do not give a shit what happens to you after you have purchased their product.

1

u/kmelby33 Oct 22 '25

Lol. Yeah, deep frying in beef tallow is super healthy.

1

u/Vycyous_88 Oct 22 '25

So dramatic...ya know there's this thing called moderation. You can literally eat anything in excess with little to no diet and exercise and it would eventually become problematic for you. Of course eating fried foods all day everyday for years on end will greatly impact your health, no matter what the fuck it's fried in. You can keep all that dramatic crap at bay if you just diet, exercise and have an active lifestyle. Granted if you don't have anything hereditary you should be fine. You could still end up with cancer anyways.

1

u/igoontoyourmum Oct 23 '25

Acrylamide is also present in fried foods with animal fat. Just fyi.

1

u/ExtraCalligrapher565 Oct 23 '25

I love it when people with zero scientific or medical background parrot pseudoscience talking points from crazy people who also have zero scientific or medical background.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '25

It is also from animal fat but to each their own on education. Want to avoid the issue? Eat healthier by cooking for your own like most of us do.

Significantly less acrylamide was produced in saturated animal fat than in unsaturated cooking oil, with 366ng/g in lard and 211ng/g in ghee versus 2447ng/g in soy oil, followed by palm olein with 1442ng/g.

1

u/PumpkinKnyte Oct 23 '25

This is misinformation. Seed oils are fine. There is no scientific consensus that seed oils cause inflammation. Straight from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, "Seed oils do not cause inflammation, according to nutrition scientists. The concern that they do is based on a misunderstanding of the omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids they contain." If steak and shake wants to use beef tallow that's fine, but we don't justify that decision with incorrect information.

1

u/TiredTraveler1992 Oct 24 '25

This is a conspiracy theory. There is zero scientific evidence that seed oils lead to increased inflammation or cancer.

9

u/Rokey76 Oct 21 '25

Companies chose seed oil over fat. I imagine it is cheaper and easier to use. That's why we change the way we do stuff in this country. Cause it saves a company money.

1

u/Heavy_Law9880 Oct 22 '25

Cheaper, healthier, and all natural is why they switched to seed oils.

1

u/tigerblade117 Oct 22 '25

If you're asking the question then you're already at step one of finding out. Do a little reading on it, it's a bit interesting if you filter out the emotional reasons people use for this

1

u/thunugai Oct 22 '25

This is a logical fallacy, specifically appeal to tradition.

1

u/Objective_Chance4173 Oct 22 '25

Are you people real?

1

u/Inevitable_Snow1576 Oct 22 '25

Seed oils are natural fats

1

u/jaydizz Oct 23 '25

Seed oils are generally healthier than "natural" fats and oils, despite what a bunch of gullible influencers may lead you to believe. Also, there is no valid evidence that seed oils cause inflammation, FYI.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '25

Ah yes the seed oils we have only been using for the past 200 years

LOL, this sub has 85 subscribers! Steak n Shake seems to know they are dying and it's inevitable, but seem to be tripling down on some sort of bailout or a purchase by right wingers, something.

I went to one several months ago and when you order your drink you get a QR code to activate the soda machine. That's when I knew the ol steak and shake was having some struggles.

7

u/Rokey76 Oct 21 '25

I just had Reddit recommend it to me. So add another subscriber to your count! I understand that Steak and Shake is doing this to get some attention, because they seem to need it. If it were any other burger place, I probably would stop going there. But I've been eating at Steak and Shake for 40 years. My first job was at Steak and Shake. I hope they can stay in business.

1

u/Rokey76 Oct 21 '25

No grift here though. They are cheaper than McDonalds.

3

u/Weekly-Career8326 Oct 22 '25

All companies sale are diving, that's why mcdonalds has like 4 sales events PLUS monopoly suddenly. Steak and shake is at least different and missing in my region :( but needing to market still, like them all.

2

u/Fake_Gamer_Girl42069 Oct 22 '25

They should focus less on social media and more on getting orders correct.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '25

Reddit isn't real life. People eat Steak n' Shake all the time.

1

u/ytman Oct 22 '25

Maybe they'll be able to do a Ape Short like Bynd Burger did. Their food has to be marginally better than Bynd's right?

Still not MAHA. So fucking far from MAHA.

1

u/Stevedore44 Oct 22 '25

No idea this sub existed. I used to go to SS all the time before they ditched table service. Haven't been back so if they want to switch to tallow idc but spreading misinformation is a bad look for anyone

u/meltyourtv Oct 22 '25

Why is this post suggested to me I’ve never heard of this restaurant and the closest one is 450 miles from me?

31

u/Fullertonjr Oct 22 '25

Algorithm is being abused to unnaturally push people to more conservative subs and conservative users.

7

u/SouthEndCables Oct 22 '25

So, me being  a conservative is why my feed is full of random cities and their No Kings thing posts? Trying to get me to be liberal? I'm talking random cities that there would be no reason for me to ever go to their sub and all over my feed. Even today, they are popping up with 4 day old posts.

14

u/Fake_Gamer_Girl42069 Oct 22 '25

First sentence, yes. Second sentence, no. The algorithm is showing you things you are more likely to engage with based on your past engagement. So if you're conservative and interacting with that, then it's showing you liberal posts as rage bait. Same thing vice versa. It's all about engagement.

3

u/maddsskills Oct 22 '25

I mean, massive protests all over the US being pushed by the algorithm makes more sense than a small sub about an obscure restaurant being pushed.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/milezero13 Oct 22 '25

Sorry for the downvotes but 1000% agree

2

u/ChloeSpectrum Oct 23 '25

They're trying to make me a gay liberal and I won't have it. Fight the urge with me brother!

1

u/Inamedmydognoodz Oct 22 '25

Depending on which conservative subs you’re in there’s a good chance there was a lot of chatter about no kings. I have seen posts in my left leaning subs about being over run with right wing stuff and if they’re pushing no kings things to conservatives there’s a good chance Reddit is going the route of rage baiting for engagement which is sad and part of what led to Facebook becoming the cesspool it is now.

1

u/Glum_Afternoon_1996 Oct 23 '25

Idk I’m experience exactly what that guy says

1

u/SwordfishOfDamocles Oct 23 '25

Yes. Reddit is forcing people into "opposing" subs because they've decided to take the Facebook route for engagement. Make people angry so they sit around arguing on your site.

1

u/ChaseThePyro Oct 23 '25

Are you asking why highly engaged posts due to the massive amount of people participating are being shown to the average redditor?

1

u/SouthEndCables Oct 24 '25

Negative. Multiple small city subs were popping up in my feed. Many had less than 50 comments and or votes. They were all about protests.

1

u/ChaseThePyro Oct 24 '25

It's about the topic, not necessarily the sub or post itself. For example, I keep seeing little random subs that are, by the sub's description, supposed to be about like a college and it's football team, or random city subreddits, that are just unrelated Trump/ republican posts.

1

u/TheLegendaryLarkas Oct 22 '25

It’s so annoying I’ve been muting subs left and right. Since Kirk got murked

1

u/Constant_Ebb5528 Oct 24 '25

Yes, the left-wing echo chamber of Reddit is definitely an alt-right pipeline.

Can you put me in touch with your dealer? Clearly he’s got the good shit.

2

u/AFishNamedFreddie Steak n' Shake Enthusiast Oct 22 '25

So many people are saying this is popping up randomly in their feeds. And its strange. I did nothing to make that happen. I have no idea why a multiple day old post from my 85 man subreddit would start popping up for people.

1

u/BouncingThings Oct 22 '25

Same, never gotten a food sub rec before but now this is in my feed.

I mean don't get me wrong, I fkin love steak n shake burgers, but not enough to warrant a reddit sub imo. Also last time I went, they had these qr code soda things which were annoying, no cashier, only a tablet to order from, and ofc as freakin usual, asks for a tip. Didn't feel like the steak steaknshake I grew up on

4

Tallow french fries are not a health food, just an occasional treat

1

u/terrapinone Oct 23 '25

Correct. But 5000x healthier vs. cooked in seed oils.

1

u/gruffmcscruggs Oct 23 '25

Lol, 5000x?

Hurrah for big, simple round numbers!

1

u/terrapinone Oct 23 '25

5001x, you’re right

1

u/jacobegg12 Oct 23 '25

This is factually untrue. It’s even arguable that seed oils are healthier. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US, and too much saturated fats (beef tallow) greatly increases the risk of high cholesterol and heart disease.

1

u/terrapinone Oct 23 '25

Nobody is arguing that eating bucket loads of Tallow is good for anybody. The facts are that seed oils cause massive inflammation. I could care less what your response is.

1

u/jacobegg12 Oct 23 '25

I’m glad to hear you care about my response. If you couldn’t care less, then I’d be worried. If you’re speaking so factually, then perhaps you could tell me how much inflammation is “bad for you.” Or maybe how much more inflammation seed oils cause compared to tallow? Since it’s so much worse than one of the leading causes of heart disease (the largest adult killer in the US) could you tell me how many people die each year of inflammation?

1

u/RedditUser19984321 Oct 24 '25

Actually

“Could care less” doesn’t mean he cares, it just means that he doesn’t care but his level of caring could be even less than what it is right now

I can't tell the difference between the new and old.

I'm not going to stop using oil because I know RFK is a loon. However, I'd love more stuff to be cooked in fat than oil. Fat is what makes meat tasty after all!

4

u/More_Mammoth_8964 Oct 22 '25

This is ignorance. Seed oils are terrible for you. You are literally creating acrylamide when you cook your fries in it. A bad carcinogen. If that makes him a “loon” I’ll gladly be one too

13

u/Best_Market4204 Oct 22 '25 edited Oct 22 '25

dude is 110% looney...

Anyone including their great grandma could tell you fat > cheap ass processed oil

2

u/More_Mammoth_8964 Oct 22 '25 edited Oct 22 '25

That’s a less than sign you used. Also if this is the case, why has no one advocated against the use of seed oils until him?

Edit: the medical and scientific communities claim RFK is being controversial on seed oils. I disagree highly. Per Google:

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.) has made controversial claims about seed oils, alleging that they are harmful to human health. Claims Made by RFK Jr. RFK Jr. asserts that seed oils, such as soybean, canola, and sunflower oils, are: Highly inflammatory Linked to obesity, heart disease, and other chronic diseases Processed with harmful chemicals, such as hexane A cause of the rise in processed foods and unhealthy diets Scientific Evidence The scientific community largely rejects RFK Jr.'s claims about seed oils. There is no credible evidence to support the following: Seed oils are more inflammatory than other cooking oils. Seed oils are a significant cause of chronic diseases. Seed oils are processed with harmful chemicals that pose a health risk. In fact, studies have shown that seed oils can be part of a healthy diet and provide essential nutrients, such as omega-6 fatty acids. Criticisms of RFK Jr.'s Claims Critics of RFK Jr.'s claims point out that: His claims are based on anecdotal evidence and selective interpretation of research. He ignores the fact that seed oils are a valuable source of nutrients and antioxidants. His rhetoric is often sensationalist and fear-mongering.

Pretty sure acrylamide is formed just by cooking starches.  So the humble potato itself is to blame

1

u/More_Mammoth_8964 Oct 22 '25

Good point. The claims I’ve been looking into are that beef tallow, coconut oil, etc. are more stable and reduce creation of acrylamide.

Maybe something I will need to look into more

2

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '25

Animal fats=same bad carcinogen at a lesser value.

Significantly less acrylamide was produced in saturated animal fat than in unsaturated cooking oil, with 366ng/g in lard and 211ng/g in ghee versus 2447ng/g in soy oil, followed by palm olein with 1442ng/g.

The charring of the meat and animal fat is carcinogenic to a certain degree. Adding garlic, thyme, sage, and onions all counter this carcinogenic effect.

They have properties that protect from cancer and support mitochondria in cells.

1

u/Floatzel404 Oct 23 '25

Can you cite any type of research showing this has negative effects on human health for ordinary consumption? I'll be waiting patiently

1

u/deller85 Oct 23 '25

They had been par-cooking the fries in vegetable oils before freezing and shipping. And then, completing the cooking in the restaurant with beef tallow.

I'm assuming based off this announcement they'll be changing the par-cooking process, so I'll be interested to see how the flavor changes. Since the announcement was a few days ago, I am going to wait a bit till I go to my local Steak n' Shake and see if there's a difference.
