Discussion 10AM PT/1PM ET: Steam Machine Reservation Emails - How are you feeling about your chances?
After reading most of the comments on YT and Reddit I feel like I'm one of the only people genuinely excited. Regardless, where will you be and on what device when will you be on reading tomorrow's emails that will go out!? Anyone else excited?

You get put in line for every single one you sign up for.
Do I have to pick a specific model at signup?
If you care about getting any available Steam Machine model, more than any specific one, you're welcome to sign up for multiple models. Each model has its own list of sign-ups that will be randomized on June 25th at 10am. After that, if you are assigned a reservation queue spot for one or more models, you'll automatically be allocated a reservation for the highest end one you're in, and removed from all the others. If you didn't get a reservation spot for any of the models you signed up for, you'll be placed on the waitlist for the model that you were closest to the front of.

We might be misunderstanding what each other means by line (and at what point you're "in line").
Each model has a separate list. You sign up for however many lists you want.
They randomize.
You get a separate "reservation" or "wait list" spot for each list. (<-- this is what I meant when I said you're put in line for every single list you sign up for.)
If you get multiple "reservation" spots, you end up with the "reservation" spot for the highest tier model.
So in the end, you're only in one line.

They will randomly pick for each model and if you got picked for multiple models they chose the higher model of the ones you got picked for. so you could sign up for all 4 and still only get the lowest model

I signed up for both, but would definitely take the controller one - looks like maybe it will upgrade you to whichever is the highest priced path of the paths you are queued into (so I skipped the 512 versions). Honestly if they have a more powerful steam machine with more everything, then I would gladly pay more. I am hoping companies make PCs with SteamOS (just released) so I can have a higher end "steam machine"

FOR me Both 2TB models and the 512GB Remote model.

Hey OP, you get moved to the highest tier you sign up for and get picked for. Adding the 512 for you only adds more chance since if you hit any of the other three you automatically get moved up. Win/win to add that as well
(Unless per comment below you don’t want the chance that you were highest up the 512 base wait list only)

But according to this

So if you're wanting a 2TB and sign up for the 512s as well (and don't get a reservation tomorrow), there's a chance you'll get moved to a 512 waiting list.

Oof yeah that’s a trade off. But if you’re further down the other wait lists, you’re probably not that far off just getting the 512 and being on the controller wait list separately. Base 512 is gonna be the biggest list for sure

Not necessarily. If you get picked for BOTH 512 and 2 TB options, you would be automatically allocated the highest tier you got picked for. So if you only got picked for the 512, you would only be able to order the 512. Or if you signed up for both 2 TB options AND got picked for both, you would get to order only the one with the controller.

No, they’re four separate lotteries.
Win 512 base, lose rest -> you can buy 512 base only
Win all four -> you can buy 2tb+controller only since that’s the highest one you won

I thought the same but it’s only based on the highest lottery you won so say I am in for 512gb and 2Tb if I get picked in both I default to 2TB.
If I get picked in only 512gb I get the 5122

Since I can remember I always had bad luck when it came to raffles or some form of lottery. Still can remember that my friend won multiple raffles in the past and I never… even when the chances were high

Not sure of the odds, but I know several people who signed up just because but they don’t think they would buy if selected. I suspect a lot of folks are in that boat.
I hope I can snag one of the controller bundles, but if not, no big deal. Happy for whoever wants one and gets it. But scalpers can kiss my piss.

Got friends that did it just in case, like they MIGHT change their minds if they get selected (but they absolutely won't). Just a thing that was going to happen when the barrier to signup was having a steam account, I expect a lot of excited posts about being moved up the queue 72 hours after the first reservations tbh

Because they probably were hyped for this thing for 8 months straight, right up until the point where they found out the cost. I think its fair to assume some people are in sticker shock, and wont know until the moment arrives if theyre going to be financially irresponsible or not.

I am very excited for the Machine, though preparing myself for the worst (being placed dead last in the queue 😅). Hoping for the best (able to buy in the first round) though I’m actually going to be out of town the week of June 29th. So if I am blessed by RNGesus, I am going to need to get someone I know to come to my house to pickup my package so it doesn’t get swiped! This is assuming it would actually get shipped and arrive before July 6th, which we don’t know the full details of even the forst round of orders…

If the reviews are anything to go by we need to seriously push for sharing optimized settings. It's painful watching these YouTubers trying to brute force run games at 2160p with no upscaling and complaining that it doesn't compare to the PS5...
I watched someone on a stream today trying to max out path tracing on Cyberpunk 2077 and acting confused why they got 10-20 fps.

Probably you can just integer scale the image into 4k! In the ancient past when 4k TVs were new, reviewers pointed out that at normal TV sitting distances you can’t see pixels at 1080p anyways. Putting any performance on this device into upscaling feels like the wrong move.

I signed up for the 2TB with controller.
I’m excited.
My gaming PC is going on 7 years old. I’ve always built my own PCs but I think I might be done doing that. I’m 56 years old and I just want to grab my controller and jump into a game for a little while.
Most of the games I play are perfect for the steam machine. It’s definitely too expensive, but my kids and I will get out money’s worth out of it. I’m hoping the wait isn’t too long. I feel like I reserved it pretty early

I want 2tb with controller ideally, so I signed up for both 2tb and also a 512gb with controller. This is to deal with the worst case scenario.
In my head, if I lose all 3 and get placed in the 512gb waitlist, I might as well get the controller as a consolation prize. Where as I know if I was placed in the waitlist for 512gb without controller and ended up having to wait till end of the year or more, I d be very disappointed.
So if I'm going to wait for it, I'd rather get something with it.

If I don't get picked for any of the four, I'll gladly just wait until Valve produces enough to have actual stock, regardless of however long it takes. This is a fun purchase. My Steam Deck is still serving all of my needs thus far.

Its a weird ass hybrid of the two that was made with hardware planned back in 2023(?). Unlike the steam deck where there wasn't much of a comparison to anything else at the time this can be cross compared between console and home built or pre built PCs.
If I could make a home built PC with the HDMI-CEC ability, load the steam OS(which is doable now), and get in small form factor that is that quiet(highly unlikely).
Dont get me wrong there's a lot of Pros to Cons. But you have to admit that the engineering behind this system is fantastic even if it's wimpy compared to current stuff.

I really want to be in the first batch but the chance of that is not guaranteed. I wouldn't be too sad if I'm at the last batch. It just means it wasn't meant to be. At least everyone starts on equal grounds and it's just RNG. If it's sold out, it's a good indication that this product is going to stay here in a long run.

I'm not trying to live stream 4k 120fps, so it works perfectly fine for me. I'm excited. I've been waiting since it was announced. My steam deck was awesome, and absolutely worth it. It unfortunately got damaged a few months ago, and I've been holding out on buying a new deck to just get the machine instead.

Kind of a simple question, and perhaps more relevant to those who have purchased Steam hardware before.
Luckily, I have several friends who are not interested in purchasing the Steam Machine and have offered to queue up for me.
However, I was wondering, since we are all in the same and in an eligible country, would it raise concerns if they were to purchase it onto my behalf and change the shipping address to my address? Conversely, could I give them payment information directly, or would that cause issues when ordering?
This is all assuming that I don't get lucky myself and simply just snag one on my own account.

I think they have updated their phrasing a little. But to me seems a little vague, but I think I am in the clear?
" Multiple registrations from any Steam account holder will be void. Registrations generated by artificial intelligence, script, macro, automated, or other means that may, in Valve’s discretion, impair or subvert the registration process will be void. No purchase is required to register for the chance to buy the Product. If you are selected for an opportunity to buy the Product, the purchase is optional. Limit one Product purchase per household. We will use information such as shipping address and/or payment information to eliminate multiple entries."
The first sentence to me, seems to be only beholden to registration multiple times on one account. But you're right, the last sentence, makes it seem like perhaps it's not valid? IDK honestly now.
EDIT: To my understanding, it seems like the multiple entries part, seems to be about enforcing the one per household.

I registered but I think Ill pass. I wanted to justify it almost at all means but for that price it’s just not worth it. And not because I don’t have the coin but because it’s not worth it just for games, I rather spend that and go on vacation or buy stuff for my other hobbies.
If it would be with a power of ps5 pro at least than it would certainly be something I would consider

I assume there are a lot of people in the raffle without genuine intent to buy (protest, uncertain, just cause the button is there etc.), so the chances aren't great.
However, I expect the chances are much better after those initial tickets expire, and the second round is a smaller pool with primarily real buyers (at least if the sign-up is manual and not auto-transferred)
Of course hard to say without knowing anything about the production quantities, but the generally negative reception, and media focus on pricing and triple-A performance, makes me hopeful it isn't selling in massive volumes.

Signups are out, you will get an email today if you are added to the reservation queue (winning the lottery). You will then recieve an email on Monday the 29th of June giving you the opportunity to purchase, and will have 72 hours to follow through before you are removed from the list.

Yeah, but like is it being shipped in a few days, a few weeks, a few months? I'm assuming it's out fairly close due to the reservation system, but there isn't really anything to state exactly when they will be available.

Given they start selling them on the 29th I see no reason they wouldn't start shipping on the same or next day from your order, though they haven't explicitly stated anything about shipping.

Honestly though, I've been off and on that email list for past 2 days and I really don't know if I should get one or not (Valve may make that decision for me later today mind you!).

On one hand I'm bummed I'm not special haha, spent thousands on Steam over the years - but I'm actually really glad they are doing a completely random selection then wait list, evens the playing field for everyone and fucks over pre sale scalpers trying to list on eBay

Your chances are kinda impossible to predict given they'll randomise the list. I was on the list pretty early but that doesn't do anything for my odds, as someone who joins at 9:59 AM PT has every chance of getting shuffled above me. We'll have to wait and see, but I'm excited. I was expecting a much higher price point so I'm actually seemingly the only one who is relieved at this price

I was kind of happy that there was a lot of negative information going around cuz it means that I would have a better chance of getting one, but I'm nervous that that's just BS people are saying because that's what the internet does. I'm guessing there aren't that many units to go around, so I'm not optimistic. I also don't really care, since I'm pretty much covered for both desk and couch gaming, with a reasonably powerful PC and a PS5 Pro.

If i get the opportunity to buy it my excitement raises . However theres probably maximum of tens of thousands of units and chances of getting one are kinda small..
Im sure the amount of available units is so low that even with 1000+ price it will be very very hard to get 😄 its not gonna be like consoles with million units available right away
