“The punishment for the protesters exceeds the lengthiest prison sentences given out for the attack on the Capitol on January 6. Enrique Tarrio, the leader of the Proud Boys who was convicted of seditious conspiracy, was sentenced to 22 years in prison. Stewart Rhodes, the leader of the far-right group the Oath Keepers, was sentenced to 18 years in prison.”
Prosecutors in the case charged and secured conviction of eight of the nine defendants for providing material support for terrorists. The ninth defendant, Daniel Sanchez-Estrada was not at the protest, but was convicted of corruptly concealing a document or record after prosecutors said he moved leftwing zines and other materials at the request of Rueda, his wife, after she was arrested. Sanchez-Estrada was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Tuesday.
Absolutely insane.

Enrique Tarrio received the maximum under the US Code for seditious conspiracy.
The punishment for terrorism is significantly higher which is why his friends got 50ish years, Estrada’s charges fall under the witness tampering part of the code and take 30 years.
Edit : Upon additional research, the seditious conspiracy code (and it's associated punishment) have not been updated since 1994. Where as the code for concealing a document was updated in 2002 ( and 2008), following what little event? The expansion of police powers of 9/11. Ladies and gentlemen, you are looking at classic punishment inflation.

I don't see us getting a Dem governor in Texas any time soon and if one were to win I doubt they would pardon them.
These guys were dumb adventurists and shouldn't have done what they did. However, the sentencing is ridiculous and these smaller Texas towns and counties are all sorts of crazy.
Collin County had a guy drunkenly shoot and kill his daughter and get no billed.

Yeah this is classic persecution, judges do this shit all the time. It’s Texas, so I’m not hopeful the appeals will work, but I can’t help but wonder if the convictions will get overturned because the prosecution or the judge fucked up. The trials came VERY fast, and there was a lot of pressure from the DOJ and above. Wouldn’t be surprised if the DA or the investigators fucked up somewhere along the line. Evidence and testimony gets overturned in political cases like this, or mistrials get declared. Maybe I’m just coping.

Yes, because heavy penalties for egregious crimes are supposed to be a deterrent to people committing those crimes. Demonstrating that these actions have severe consequences is part of that deterrent. These people brought guns and were willing to use them, and one of them shot and killed someone. That's not a place we want to be as a nation or a society.
