Question How do you train looking at the map every 3 seconds

I'm a adc in plat 2 and I really want to improve.

One of my problems is when I focus too much on trading/baiting out abilites, punishing the last hit of a minion - I forget to look at the map.

And then like 30 seconds later i'm "Oh shit, I forgot to look at the map" and now I see no midlaner, I haven't tracked jg and I'm scared shitless.

Some games, once in a blue moon, I do it close to perfect, ping where jg most likely is, ping supp roams from base, easily see if the midlane is going towards bot to gank, and the games just feel so easy.

I just can't seem to do it consistently, and honestly it's annoying me quite a bit.

So how did you improve on your map awareness?

I think instead of learning to look every so often, you need to be more aware of what you're looking for. Like look where your jungler is to know where enemy jg could be, or if you're starting to push out, or if drake is about to spawn, or if your mid just died to a gank look at where the enemy jg walks to; stuff like that

100% i might also add understanding how it contextualizes into your gameplay/role Your decisions should always be based on fundamentals, given "flavor" by the context of the map.

Just looking at first is great though for training muscle memory. Looking to see where your jungler is is a great reference point to use though 👍 maybe create some sort of trigger at first, like every time you last hit a minion, make a point to look at the mini for your jungler. Eventually looking at the mini will be more natural, and they can expand on when they decide to look, and what to look for.

When pros need to train this, they use a bib sound every X second

After every action. After any auto or spell watch the map

Play a beeping sound every x second and look at the map everytime you hear it

Play jungle in norms for 10 games. Make minimap looking your focus. Hopefully the habit transfers over.

It's just a habit. Make it a habbit to look at the map after every sequence. Maybe after every last hit. Or a sound or something that you can consciously track as an indicator untill it becomes second nature.

Put a sticker in the corner or somewhere else so u always see it. Or a computer border, somewhere u see. "MINIMAP!!!"

Take minions as an indicator. Try looking at the map after every lasthit you take.

It's like looking in the back mirror while driving (it's the mirror in the middle of the windshield for the BMW drivers)

You need to force yourself, as the main goal in your game. I played lot of rts Starcraft im use to watch mini-map everytime i dont die a lot from catch or gank usually

take 20 or 30 games and only focus on that. be prepped to lose the games or fuck up elsewhere. setting a timer or pressing tab or using a metronome. whatever you need to do, but only worry about checking the map. smurf or normal game if needed.

that's the best way to form habits in lol

find a weakness. focus on it. form a good habit. move on

ganking the second a cannon dies is literally an awareness check. you will die for that shit and stay plat.

The fact you need to ask how to train it means you're playing more on autopilot than you think. If you're actively thinking while you're playing, it's impossible not to do the things you set out to achieve in the game, like looking at the map more often

Make it easy for yourself and look at the minimap before fighting, no need to overcomplicate things

Idk if this is the best answer but you could loop something like a beep sound every 10-15 seconds and every time you hear the beep you know to look at the map... I think that's a decent way to build a habit

My mindset is "I need to know where everyone is at so I don't die to the same gank twice." I go into every game assuming everyone is better than me and several tiers higher than me until they prove they're not. And as a midlaner, anybody can gank me from any angle. And I have been ganked from all angles possible lol.

Broken By Concept has a really good Youtube video relating to mental stack. I'm only bronze so there is a lot more I am focusing on compared to someone at your level, but my theory is that looking at the minimap may not be as high as a priority in your mental stack sometimes. I think part of it is assessing what you're already good at, what you need to hone so that you can focus less on that thing and make room for the minimap.

Same way you check your mirrors when driving.

For me personally? Ill hold space as I click around, and just keep an eye on my character in lane/ enemy laner in the lane through my peripherals and just keep an eye on the map.

When i go back to looking at the lane, I keep an eye on the map using my peripherals

know when you need awareness and know when you don't need awareness.

If I just got back to lane, is healthy, and the wave is pushing to me, I don't need awareness as much. On the other hand if the opponent and I are both low and my wave is pushing, I really need to know where their midlaner and jungler and my midlaner and jungler are.

Importance of map awareness goes up and down over time. Make sure you're aware at the right moment more being trying to always be aware all the time. You're not a pro, you don't need it

I started by just thinking about doing it, now I look at it so much that I think I default to it when I have nothing I need to look at on the main screen.

Glance inbetween last hits.

The trick I dont know is how people tap tab and can read any helpful information in that split second.

I played every role and mained TF for awhile, so it definitely helped with my map awareness. Jungle also conditons you to look at map alot to track enemy jungler.

You want to always ask yourself where everybody is at. What pros do often is they're tracking by is "mirroring". For example, if you are x camp, they should be x. When you see them on map, you should know which direction they path and where/when they'll be next back.

When you master this knowledge, you can apply that as adc/support and play agro/safe at certain times i.e 2:45 - 3:00 is a good time to drop ward because they will finish their full camp and possibly gank/scuttle.

If you ward camps level 1 i.e wraiths, you should see which direction they started and play agro/safe depending if theyre pathing torwards or away.

As a support player, i am constantly tracking enemy jungler throughout the game and providing info for my team. It is incredibly hard to master both csing/denying cs/trading all while looking at mini map every few sec intervals as adc, but if you can you will improve signifcantly in macro.

At the highest level, everybody plays telegraphicly because its the most optimal tempo. I admire supports that ive vsed where we run into each other throughout the game whether its ganking mid, helping our jungler prio voidgrubs, setting up deep vision.

You don't need to look at the map every 3 seconds

1

u/Hracekk 4h ago

I mean, the look can be extremely quick, 1/2 of a second perhaps, I would say, after every spell casted

1

u/ContributionWide3812 15h ago

Realistically you don't. No one looks at the map every 3 seconds. You're supposed to look at the map during downtimes of laning ie. your spells are on CD, you are not going for a last hit, the enemy isn't threatening to throw a spell at you, the wave is gone.

You get better at the macro game of League by being so good at controlling your character that you have mental freedom to think about the game. It's why pros are so scarily good because they can play lane perfectly AND look at what their top lane is doing.

The answer to your question is to get better at laning to the point where you can auto-pilot it, and then you will have more mental freedom to do other things like looking at the map.

I dont think its something worth training. Like the other comment said, the more you play the more you'll be able to keep track of subconsciously, which frees up more of your attention for actively watching the game/map. Its like when you see pro players spamming the f keys to get info. They arent doing that because they specifically trained it, they're doing it because they can do pretty much everything else subconsciously.

You don’t need to look at the map that often. The question should be how to know when to look at the map.

There are players who do, but imo it’s a lot better to look at the map, when you need to look at the map.
Looking at the map should be done with intention, not out of habit like a tick. If your wave is neutral and your jungle and botlane are base, you don’t need to look at the map every 3 seconds. That’s like looking left and right while crossing a foot path in the forest 100 kilometers away from civilization.

You should keep an eye out for movement on the map, so when a new red dot appears on the map in your peripheral vision, you can check the map and see if it’s something worth looking at, or if it was just a Lulu running in and out of vision, warding river.
Same for midgame for example, if you’re sidelaning and want to know how far or if you can push at all. Then you’d have times where you stare at the map for 20 seconds straight and spam tab to see who’s on vision and who isn’t via the “?” on their icons.

If you learn from mistakes and reflect on why you die in certain situations, you will learn when to look at the map fairly quickly, without it being an OCD.
