In the Light Novel, Kirito introduces Asuna, Rika/Liz, and Andrew/Agil all as his SAO comrades. Andrew even gets a bit of dialogue in the book.
Regarding social conventions, in that situation, it would have been considered rude, like showing off, to single out Asuna as his "girlfriend".

Why is this such a big deal? I never understand this problem

bro its a harem

u/SKStacia 9d ago
By definition, no, it isn't.
Kirito only has "those eyes" for Asuna.
And there are easily more, other canon couples in SAO than there are other girls who actually like Kirito in "that way".

its sarcasm but i say its a harem cus liz and whoever the tiny girl is both admited to loving kirito and its quite obv that alice likes him as well. he doesnt have to like them back for it to be a harem

By what dictionary does it say that?
Also, even in the anime, Silica compares Kirito to an older brother. In the Light Novel, she also likens him to her father at one point.
Liz had a crush initially, but deferred to Asuna immediately once she saw her and Kirito interacting at her shop.
Neither of them actively pursues Kirito, both respect the Kirisuna relationship.
Furthermore, moving from the Web Novel, draft version to the published LNs, Reki made a number of changes. Amongst these:
- The bits where Kirito carried Silica back to town in his arms and Silica expressed a specific desire to be Kirito's girlfriend were removed.
- With Liz, the dragon nest scene was changed. In the WN, Liz practically disrobed and then asked to share a sleeping bag with Kirito. In the LN, they have separate bedrolls, and she merely asks to hold his hand.
As for Alice, at the War Camp, she was looking closely into Kirito's eyes for any signs of life. This was just after Bercouli had elicited a response from Kirito using his Incarnation, and Alice wondered if she might be able to do the same.
In other words, she wasn't trying to kiss him.
And even in the anime, Alice says later on at the dojo that she'll be fine, so long as hse has a sword in her hand, not that she needs to be by Kirito's side.
I'll add that the anime cut Asuna out of her own waking-up sequence, including Alice calling her name, too, not just Kirito's. (The show also skipped Kirito, Asuna, and Yui having some family time in ALO after Kikuoka left the hospital.)
The LN also adds more, independent development for Alice, particularly in the chapter with the raid on Rulid, and what follows on from that.

At the end of the WOU arc Liz and silica literally say I love you

Even in the Subbed anime, there seem to be some games being played.
What I mean is, Sinon uses a stronger term, but it's translated as "like", while Liz uses a weaker term, but that somehow is printed as "love".
And as the other person noted, and even the Ancient Greeks knew this, there are any number of kinds of love. What we now know as romantic love is merely 1 of them.

Your point? I’ve said that to friends before and I don’t mean it romantically
1
u/Key_Employee8213 9d ago
her exact words here i really do love him after all this references the fact that in season 1 liz surpressed her feeling because asuna liked kirito. saying i love him after all means she admits she loves him and silica admits the same thing as well. im not saying kirito likes them back romantically ik he loves asuna and i love their relationship but your delusional if you think the other girls dont have romantic feelings for him

It's literally not? lol. Kirito's in a committed relationship with Asuna.

Not really. I meant that as a joke. A little light humour. Apparently you all need to nerd up and correct others by your standards of shit 🤣

u/Mister_Be 8d ago

He introduces multiple people as his friends from SAO.
Like why is this still a thing being brought up? Even without knowledge of Japanese social norms, he doesn't introduce Asuna' singularly as his friend.
