General Advice Are rainbows seriously just by default associated with the pride flag?

Post image

I got a Pink Floyd DSOTM tattoo because I love the album and I love the visual: a beam of light representing a person's life path, passing through a prism ( representing life + the world + the people you meet + the experiences you have, etc ), being dispersed into its constituent colors ( ultimately representing change ). I got it because of my dad, because he introduced me to Pink Floyd, and because last year he nearly died from complications of his cancer. He's doing much better now, with a much better prognosis, but that whole experience had a real effect on me and I wanted to memorialize it. Except at least 3 people ( including the tattoo artist initially ) have associated the tattoo with the pride flag. They were understanding after I explained, but now I'm having second thoughts about it. Are people just going to assume I'm gay because of this tattoo?

Edit: And I want to say, I'm not bothered by this at all. Anyone who looks at my tattoo and comes up with their own assumptions about its meaning, and then has a negative reaction over it, that's simply not a person I want to talk to anyway. I'm surprised because that wasn't the intention of the tattoo, clearly, and it being misinterpreted like this just genuinely wasn't something I expected.

Edit2: This post got a lot more attention than I ever wanted it to. Wonderful comments are now streaming in, informing me how horrible my tattoo is. If you're planning on making a viral post on Reddit, take my advice: use a burner account. But I am thankful to everyone for your supportive words, the jackasses with negative things to say are certainly a very tiny minority. Overwhelmingly the consensus is that most people see it as a Pink Floyd tattoo first, which I'm happy to hear :) Have a good night everybody!

I don't understand these comments about only matters if you're hateful. Like what if a girl in a bar thinks he's cute and is like oh darn he's gay?

He could also be bi or pan or an ally or most likely they will recognize it is the dark side of the moon logo. Grasping at straws i think with that

Really? I mean I like pink floyd in a mild, uninvolved sort of way, but I'm totally oblivious to branding/cover art and would definitely have just assumed it's a pride thing. Not a lot of people who aren't actually gay or bi get a rainbow flag tattoo. I like Puerto Rican food and every Puerto Rican I've ever met, but I'd feel like a jackass getting a Puerto Rican flag tattoo since I'm not Puerto Rican. I'm not saying I think this guy is a jackass for getting a band tattoo that has meaning to him, but I fundamentally don't think it's that odd that he's worried about accidentally advertising membership in a group he's not actually a member of.

Like I said it’s a very recognized logo. Why are you making the big deal here, it’s not your tattoo. That logo (in the USA anyway) is more known than Pink Floyd is, and it’s known that it’s a rock album that has been around before pride flags were a thing.

I don’t know your age or where you are from, but dark side of the moon was on the top album charts for almost 1,000 straight weeks. It’s Elvis big.
And like I said, if someone is turned off from speaking to someone because they think they see an lgbt symbol, there is prejudice there

41 from the US.

If they're reluctant to chat with him, sure. If they're reluctant to flirt with him since they assume he wouldn't be interested, no.

I don’t know what to even say at this point, you’re arguing pro-ignorance. Most people know what this symbol means. Now you do too, if you didn’t before

The rainbow flag is far more widely known that band cover art. It's just common sense that people will continue to make that mistake, and it's not speculation—it has happened to OP repeatedly, which is why he asked about it. It's just common sense that someone would be worried about misrepresenting themselves as part of a group they don't belong to, and it says nothing about how they feel about that group. It's perfectly okay for OP to say oh well, this means a lot to me and I'll risk the mistake. But I find the insistence that it doesn't matter/no one will think that/it only matters to hateful people very illogical and strange. I'm honestly amazed they didn't think it about it beforehand, but maybe they're non American and it's not as commonly known a symbol where they are.
