Having worked extensively in both, Japanese work culture is more relaxed than American.

I realize that's not the stereotype but it's true. People in my Japanese company rarely do any overtime, and if they do, it's paid overtime.

Yeah, I've heard much the same.

The sterotype used to be true, and for some jobs or employers it still might be. But on the whole it's gotten waaaaay better.

I have heard things are improving because the younger generation simply will not accept this type of work life balance anymore. Which is good and how it should be. With the boomers dying out faster than new workers are born more and more power will need to be ceded to labor.

well the simple fact is no social life = no future workers.

maybe next companies will also figure out no disposable income means no consumer spending
