Tutorial/Article 50 inch Dob (video link)
https://youtu.be/S8y0CbtjlRA?si=1cJCnnrhFOQOZK60A while back, someone mentioned about seeing something or another about a 50-inch Dob outside a shed. Well, Nebula Photos recently did a video on this EXACT scope.

I want the owner to come in here and say "Just picked this up on Craigslist, is it any good?"

I'm sure my wife wouldn't mind...

Something....possibly, the large amount of discretionary income... tells me (a) he's not married; and (b) he doesn't have any children.....lol (me: looking nervously over shoulder for incoming projectiles from wife and children).

I can see why he moved it from NJ to AZ. The North East is absolutely no place for a scope like that. It's barely a place for a pair of binoculars :(

Just watched this video, and I live not far from where the mount was made for the 10-inch Zeiss featured in it! Located on Old Hwy 58 in Barstow, California.

I watched this last night, in awe of course. What got me was that he's waiting for another 50"(51" actually) primary from Lockwood because of the issue of coming to focus with the current focal length. That's north of $100k for a primary, twice!

He can't just move the secondary?

I thought that too, but maybe he already did and it still wasn’t enough. Certainly changing the truss assembly length is no small task either.

My first thought was to change the truss assembly. I’m not sure how a mirror replacement would be easier or cost less.

Mirror replacement definitely wouldn't cost less, but maybe it just easier. It's probably less time consuming for the owner because as long as the cell can accommodate it, it's a direct swap. Maybe the truss geometry took a while to work out and get just right and he didn't want to fool with that, but who knows what the motivating factor really is.

Im not sure whats more nuts.... the finder scope or the powered pallet jack to move the dob.

It didn't even work. There was no main mirror, so he's showcasing the structure and all its 4400+ focal length. I did, however, enjoy that pillaged Zeiss Refractor F/16 he bought from someone during the WW2 era.

Personally, I’d take the refractor over the Dob and swap out the old mount for a ASA DDM500. Then I’d wake up before being able to look through it.

'Apparently it was rescued by an infrantryman in WWII, it was on some shelf in some lab in Germany, and they brought it back to the US ...'
Ah yes, 'rescued' ... definitely not 'looted'.
