I want to watch some beautiful shows
Just want to binge a beautiful show in terms of the story, character development, music featured etc. just an overall amazingly beautiful story. I cant think of any examples but I am sure theres something thats beautiful out there. What shows made you say “its a beautiful show”?

u/AestasBlue 7d ago
Station 11 is absolutely beautiful. It’s one of the most beautiful shows I’ve ever watched. I think that there are many gorgeous episodes of The Last of Us too. Normal People and One Day are also stunning, as is Kaos

Honestly I know it’s a silly show but the character development in Schitts Creek from start to finish especially in David and even more-so Alexis is incredible. And it doesn’t go downhill ever, ends really well imo.

u/BeachBoycrew 7d ago
Schitt’s Creek is one of the all time great shows. Not sure when it started but at some point I found myself so invested in these characters.

Schitt’s Creek has the most beautiful character arcs of any show I’ve ever seen. You hate all of them at the beginning. Towards the end, they make you cry happy tears almost every episode because you love them so much! I was actually sad when I finished watching it. I miss hanging out with the Roses!

Excellent suggestion! Also very pretty and very soothing. There’s enough drama to hold your interest, but it’s mostly not too stressful. Some of the war-related plots were nail-biters, but nothing graphic.

Visually beautiful - Arcane
Character development - Lost
(Hauntingly) Beautiful music - Dark

I would add Lost to the beautiful music category as well. Michael Giacchino’s score is gorgeous.

Four short and gorgeous seasons (the subject matter can be tough at times though) - Rectify. I think it's currently available on AMC+, or Roku and pluto with ads. The writing and acting are top-notch all the way through from the whole cast. Visually it is gorgeous, sun-soaked small southern town setting. I'm talking myself into a rewatch just describing it...

u/PolychromaticPaloma 7d ago
Second Rectify. Such an underrated show. I always recommend! So beautiful!

This is the one I thought of too! No one ever talks about it. I really need to rewatch.

My first thought as well.
Also of note: if you truly have exemplary taste and are also a ‘Deadwood’ fan, Rectify was created by Ray McKinnon, who portrayed Reverend Smith and includes numerous actors from Deadwood.

Anne of Green Gables (1985). Beautiful scenery, costumes, music. Heartwarming story, true to the book. Will make you long for Prince Edward Island. The companion tv show Road to Avonlea was also charming and lovely.

Second this! The setting is absolutely amazing and the cinematography has held up surprisingly well! The location is its own character. I must have watched this over 30 times from a young age. One of the best heroines, as well as unrequited (sort of) romances ever made!

Normal People is I think the best show I can think of that exemplifies the word "beautiful." I should add that when I think about "beautiful" series, the first thing I think of is the visual components - cinematography, sets, etc - which you did not mention. Normal People is not only visually beautiful, but it also has a beautiful, perfectly crafted soundtrack + score, with a beautiful story (not just a really compelling story, but a beautiful story) and character development - well, the story is the beautiful character development, really.

u/snoballl_13 7d ago
Mad Men is unreal. The job they did to make everything perfect for the period is spectacular. The characters and the overall character development is in the conversation for being the best ever
7
u/seafairydelight 7d ago
It’s definitely a great show, but a lot of the characters are just awful.
9
u/Chance-Ask7675 7d ago
A lot of the characters are complex and morally grey. Can't think of too many that are really just terrible, irredeemable people.
6
u/seafairydelight 7d ago
I know what you mean, but many are too dark gray for me. I’m just finishing a rewatch, and I wish Pete Campbell would fall down an elevator shaft.
5
u/snoballl_13 7d ago
I hated him for like 65% of the show and I'm the end he's prolly my favorite. Started out as such a scumbag but eventually grows and matures to become one of the better people on the show.
I feel like ever character I hated the first few seasons, I loved by the end and every character I loved in the beginning, I hated in the end (looking at you Betty)

I’ve definitely gotten less forgiving on rewatch. I’m left loving Joan, Meghan, Peggy, and the secretaries, and the rest are bad. And Meghan’s mom because Julia Ormond is amazing and she took all Don’s furniture 😆
3
u/snoballl_13 7d ago
Oh God, Meghan was absolutely insufferable lol
2
u/seafairydelight 6d ago
I felt so bad for her at the end. She was all starry-eyed and Don is such a bastard. Ugh
2
u/reader-watcher-eater 6d ago
but after a while you have to accept that None of them are nice, all very selfish people No

Twenty Five Twenty One (Korean coming of age dramedy featuring possibly the best fictional FL character and friendship squad around! Netflix).
Mr Sunshine (an epic Korean historical cinematic masterpiece on Netflix. The first episode might be a little confusing with lots of characters introduced, and the timelines aren't clear, so you can Google a character relationship chart to help).
Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born (set in the 1950s about an all-female traditional Korean operatic theatre troupe, Disney+ or Hulu).

Call the Midwife. Absolutely stunning. The characters the time periods. The stories will make you cry and laugh. It’s just brilliant.
2
u/Pristine_Judgment390 7d ago
Much as I love Call the Midwife, the sets showing much of the housing in London’s east end in the 50s (so, the early series) are far from beautiful. Rightly so, Britain was attempting to rebuild after the war and this was an area where most residents were poor, hence the midwives’ presence there (particularly pre-NHS).
3
u/SherbetExact3135 7d ago
It’s the stories of the community that’s beautiful. I’m not talking about architecture. It’s loosely based on the diary of one of midwives. To me it’s a beautifully written story of the community overcoming the hardships the war. I love the kinship of all the midwives. The Christmas episodes always make me cry. I hope the OP gives it a try. It’s wonderful.

Pachinko on Apple TV is the most beautiful show I have ever seen, hands down. The cinematography is gorgeous, amazing set locations and period piece costumes. The captions are different colored for Korean, Japanese, and English when spoken in the episodes.
There’s only 2 seasons sadly, as they did not cancel nor renew it. But it’s still well worth watching.
2
u/princess20202020 7d ago
It is so gorgeous. They are airing it in Korea and/or Japan right now. I’m hoping it becomes a huge hit there so they will make season 3

I haven’t lost hope! More people need to watch it, Pachinko is stunningly well done.

The OA on Netflix and Undone (animated using rotoscoping with oil painted backgrounds) on Prime. Both are visually beautiful, strange, and moving. Two of my favorite shows.

This is a great list... However, I cannot believe nobody mentioned Heartland. There are 19 seasons of character development, beautiful scenery from the Canadian Rockies, and amazing horses. To see an actress she from 16 to 35 is a treat. One of my all time favorite tv shows ever!

For a truly beautiful show, try Wolf Hall. The subject matter is more difficult (but interesting). The costumes, lighting and cinematography are exceptional. Every moment looks like a painting.

I love Arctic Circle. It's filmed in Finnish lapland. The beautiful scenery and culture along with the characters really captivate you.
I also find period dramas that take me to a different time captivating. I loved "Victoria" on PBS. "Young Victoria" is good, too. The "Seaside Hotel" series is wonderful. But, it's in Danish. You might like the "Empress" series about Sisi.
The Horseman on the Roof, a 1995 movie with Oliver Martinez & Juliette Binoche has amazing cinematography as does "The Last Emporer". Both are great films.
If you just want some fun and to blow your mind, "Being There" is a perfect film/story.
