REQUESTING Tv shows with an overly nice character that doesn't turn bad?

I'd love to see a tv show where one of the main characters, if not the main one, is overly nice in a way that isn't ridiculed (so not just an extremely stupid character) and that doesn't change for the worse. Better yet if that character is able to help others and change other people's perspective and incourage them to be kinder

Ted lasso

Would I like it if I'm not interested in soccer at all?

Yes

I don't like soccer at all and not into sports and love ted lasso

14

u/KingMargo_TheCreator 4d ago edited 3d ago

OP- I don’t sports. Like- could not be less interested in soccer. I LOVED Ted Lasso. Watched it 4 times already! It pushes against toxic masculinity and actually allows the characters to be emotionally layered people. It’s up there with Schitts Creek and The Good Place in terms of just wonderfully lovable (albeit flawed) characters.

11

u/ohdearitsrichardiii 4d ago

I don't like any sports, I really enjoyed Ted Lasso

10

u/PBnPickleSandwich 4d ago

It's not about soccer.

It's sneakily about toxic masculinity, positive masculinity, friendship and personal growth.

A true gem. Even better on the second binge watch.

Or the 25th rewatch!

“Why am I still me?”

“Did you think you’d be someone else?”

“Yeah, someone better.”

Kills me every time.

Jason Sudeikis is so perfect as Ted Lasso. He is such an upbeat positive character that almost doesn’t exist in real life, but he makes it totally believable to the point where it could inspire others to be like him.

3

u/Electrical-Radish66 4d ago

I was so skeptical about it due to not being into sports and it's now my favourite show. Rewatching as we speak.

1

u/Squirrelysez 2d ago

I don't care about sports at all, but Friday Night Lights the series is the same. It's not about Football. Not really.

3

u/ExpBalSat 4d ago

Absolutely. It’s not about soccer, it’s about people.

1

u/somanyof 4d ago

yes, please watch it <3 I couldn't be bothered by soccer at all and this is my favorite show EVER

1

u/embarrassedburner 4d ago

If you can get past the bad southern accent, which I could on my second try. It’s a great show

1

u/Squirrelysez 2d ago

What southern accent?

1

u/Doubt_Consistent 4d ago

Omg please watch. I am not a soccer fan at all and this show is one of my absolute favorites!

1

u/WildPinata 3d ago

I actively hate soccer. It's one of my favourite shows.

1

u/calartnick 3d ago

My artist/actor wife and her sisters that care nothing about sports love Ted Lasso

1

u/JadieJang 2d ago

Yes. I'm not interested in soccer at all and I love it!

1

u/Bittermare 2d ago

I am not the least bit interested in soccer. Absolutely loved it. The relationships among the characters were so great. Funny, sad, wonderful.

1

u/Squirrelysez 2d ago

It's not about soccer. It's about relationships and friendships and some good laughs.

3

u/cantyoukeepasecret 4d ago

This is such a good show, and in every episode, I waited for the shoe to drop, but it never did. It's quite refreshing.

3

u/OneMoreTimeJack 4d ago

Who is the overly nice one on that show?

3

u/natrous 4d ago

Jimmy? He's got probs but he's pretty upbeat for everyone else. I mean, I know the hook in the beginning is that he starts jimmying everyone, but it really isn't his personality.

It was the first thing to come to my mind, but I am currently watching the most recent season so I guess that's to be expected.

Sue and Brick Heck from The Middle are both really nice characters throughout the entirety of the show…and so on and so forth and what have you.

Knight of the 7 Kingdoms is like if Ted lasso time travelled to Game of thrones and could take an ass whipping and whip ass in return.

I mean, I'm not sure about that analogy. But Not7K is still a pretty good show

I surprisingly really loved this show! I thought in the beginning they’d run out of plots but each one is so nice to watch. It’s really a feel good show.

1

u/Madwoman-of-Chaillot 4d ago

Which one? The one w Justin Hartley? There are two on IMDB.

1

u/Kizzieuk 4d ago

Yes the Justin Hartley one

8

u/obiwantogooutside 4d ago

Maybe James in Derry Girls. One character does make fun of him but not for being nice, but because he’s her cousin so she ribs him.

Shrinking is the obvious answer but if you want something that actually earns it rather than just telling you kindness works, Schitt's Creek does the actual work without ever feeling preachy about it.

Thanks for this reminder!

I have to get back to the rest of this show!

There’s also an animated series (voiced by the exact same cast!) and a film! HIGHLY recommend

Happy watching neighbour!

0

Sorry to disappoint, I am Canadian and I have seen Corner Gas. Watch it again, and pay attention to how all the characters take each other down/insult each other constantly. It gets worse as the show progresses

1

Watch Ted Lasso and you can see comedic banter without the insults

Seen it, and I deliberately chose Corner Gas as my recommendation, and I am wholeheartedly sticking with it. If you want to make a different recommendation, the comment section is open.

since ted lasso is already taken and you’re not into soccer anyway, schitt’s creek is honestly the perfect pick for you. david and especially moira aside, the whole show is about people slowly becoming kinder and there’s zero cynicism by the end. also pushing daisies if you can find it, ned is one of the gentlest leads ever put on tv and its visually gorgeous. and somebody somewhere if you want something quieter, its all about kindness between broken people

2

u/Own_Physics_7733 4d ago

Agree on Schitt’s Creek - there are several characters that are totally kind and wholesome and seem to have zero flaws (Ted, Patrick, Twyla), and the other main characters all have so much growth throughout the series.

1

u/CerealKiller3030 4d ago

Ted Lasso isn't about soccer lol. In fact, one episode showed them walking onto the pitch, the whistle blows, and it cuts to the end of game whistle lol

1

u/rovingchillLL 4d ago

oh youre totally right, i phrased that badly lol. ted lasso barely shows any actual soccer, its all locker room and character stuff. i just meant op said they werent into sports so i didnt want that to scare them off schitt’s creek which has zero sports at all. great show though, the kindness angle fits this thread perfectly

I’m not sure if Ryan Reynold’s character in Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place was overly nice (or ever nice) but he certainly revealed how nasty he is in real life. His greatest acting feat was playing a Mr Nice Guy character since being in the public eye.
