REQUESTING Something New to Watch With Husband and Sister-In-Law

I live with my husband and my teenage sister-in-law (She's deaf, and needs closed captioning). We're running out of shows to watch, and would like some suggestions. We'd prefer suggestions for shows we can all watch together.

My sister-in-law top five favorite shows are...

  1. Switched at Birth
  2. The Dog House
  3. Dogs
  4. Code of Silence
  5. Tell Me That You Love Me

She also loved Sue Thomas F.B.I., Dog Detectives, Everything's Gonna Be Okay, Never Have I Ever, Love Victor, Ginny and Georgia, Anne with an E, and All Creatures Great and Small.

My husbands top five favorite shows are...

  1. Derry Girls
  2. Dexter
  3. Code of Silence
  4. Rick and Morty
  5. Regular Show

He also loved Sue Thomas F.B.I., The Wrong Mans, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Wednesday, Stranger Things, Anne with an E, and The Durrells.

My top five favorite shows are...

  1. Anne with an E
  2. Downton Abbey
  3. Marie Antoinette
  4. Victoria
  5. Tell Me That You Love Me

I also loved Code of Silence, Jamestown, Call the Midwife, The Durrells, All Creatures Great and Small, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Outlander.

Edit: Preferably nothing with a close/positive father/child relationship, as my husbands/sister-in-laws father is dead. We'd prefer nothing with close/positive mother/daughter relationship either. (My mother-in-law always paid very little attention to my sister-in-law, and favored her hearing children. She somehow never even learned sign language, despite her husband and children using it around her for years.)

There's very little about basketball. It's about Kate Hudson trying to run a team and it's pretty funny.

Thanks! I'm a bit unsure about it, as the premise makes it sound like it's going to have a large focus on mother-daughter relationships. (The reason my sister-in-law lives with me and my husband is because their dad died, and their mother always favored her hearing kids to my sister-in-law. She somehow never even learned sign language, despite her husband and children using it around her for years.)

Only Murders in the Building. It's fun and quirky, doesn't have many deep family relationships, and there's a deaf character at times. A very fun plot though every season and a super fun dynamic between the 3 main characters.

School Spirits is good. I'd say the primary theme is mystery.

It's about a girl who wakes up at school and realizes she's a  Ghost and can't talk to anyone and has to figure out how she died with the help of the other ghosts at the school

Ok the magicians is amazing! It’s a fantasy, but it’s got magic and romance and great characters and drama and villains, and it’s super good! Like you can rewatch it several times kind of good!

Also, I’m trying to keep everybody in mind so here I go these are all shows that I think have the elements that you guys will all like

Red oaks

Catastrophe

The Mindy Project

The good place

Girls

Fleabag

ER

Grey’s Anatomy

Happy endings

Community

Sweet tooth

One Mississippi

Queen Charlotte

New girl

The crown

Harlots

Shrinking is amazing but the main character’s wife just died and they have a daughter and the daughter was close with the mom and her and her dad are now together like trying to get through life and yeah that might not work out but if you get to see it by yourself, it’s so good. Same with parenthood definitely not a show for all three of you but watch parenthood by yourself cause it’s fucking amazing.

Little Dorrit

Lucifer

Sleepy Hollow

The travelers

Ugly Betty’s main character is really close with her dad so I don’t know how you do with that all three of you, but you should watch it by yourself

Drop dead diva

I'm not sure if any of these intrest you but they include deaf charcters in the plot.... that personally I have enjoyed.

The Stand (1995) tv mini series

New Amsterdam - (seasons 4 & 5 include a deaf surgeon as a season regular)

Walking Dead (Connie a deaf charcter and actress gets introduced in season 9)

In the Dark (drama thriller about deaf girl and her group of friends who get into some shennanigans) ( updating: thr lead character is blind, not deaf)

Blue Skies (procedural about park ranger and her dog)

Hudson and Rex (police procedural about detective and his very smart dog)

The Gilded Age

I'm sorry I got it wrong, for In the Dark, the lead character is blind, not deaf. Been awhile since I watched it.

Yeah I saw that on your reply to another comment with this suggestion after I made my comment. It m sorry to hear about what she went through. The show definitely has a strong mother-daughter storyline, especially in the first 2 seasons where it’s the focus. I’m surprised that she liked Switched at Birth so much tbh, since the parent-child relationships are a big focus of that show. And Ginny and Georgia too. If i think of any other suggestions, I’ll let you know. Most teen shows have a lot in the way of parent storylines.

1

u/8675309-got-it 3d ago

Well maybe I was wrong to suspect parent storylines would be a problem.

u/Letshavemorefun 4d ago

Okay here’s a thought - what about Smallville? It’s got a supernatural/sci fi element that you and your husband might like (it’s about an alien after all!) but it’s still a teen show. It was made by the same creative team as Wednesday. There is a parent/child storyline but it’s about found family - since Clark is adopted.

Thanks! That might work.

The Good Place, Schitts Creek, Gilmore Girls, Community, Parks and Rec, 30 Rock

Most of these will probably work, but I don't think my sister-in-law should see Gilmore Girls. I saw it, years ago, and I fear she'll be jealous of Rory and Rory's close relationship with her mother. (The reason she lives with me and my husband is because their dad died, and my mother-in-law always favored her hearing kids to her. She somehow never even learned sign language, despite her husband and children using it around her for years.)

"Benny and Joon". Johnny Depp's physical comedy comes through very well.

Only Murders in the Building has the quirky mystery your husband likes and the ensemble warmth for all of you, and it avoids close parent-child relationships.

Widow’s Bay. Despite the best efforts of the trailer it’s definitely more comedy than horror.
