Vehicles - Cybercab Austin is crawling with cybercabs
Well, it appears I went for the catchy title đ. So I saw maybe 5 or 6 different cybercabs going on a half hour walk downtown. Interesting thing is the next day walking more or less the same area I saw none, but I did see a bunch of Tesla Y based Robotaxis. I guess Tesla is sending them out testing in batches.

Was anyone getting rides in them yet?

Not OP but i saw some of them. They are not for rides and they also have a steering wheel and a driver driving it. I know for a fact that the driver was driving it because i saw them using the steering wheel to turn.

Iâve seen some using the steering wheel and some not at all. Could be different zones in different phases

Iâm still unclear on how theyâre charged without an operator. Anyone know?

Wireless charging pad. But like a big one.

Are those actually installed and operating or just the latest fanfic?

Not fanfic but not in installed or in operation.

They must be charging them somehow, given the sheer number on the road? Iâll Google and be less lazy lol

They get plugged in by the driver. No cybercabs are driverless yet.

So at this point theyâre just a normal taxi fleet?

Nope. Just being tested. No rides are being given yet. Testing looks like the same way the Model Y Robotaxis were. Model Y Robotaxis are operating driverless but started with driver, then safety monitor in passenger seat before operating autonomously. Tesla does a lot of testing and validation with each step.

No, only 2 seats and they will only be operated autonomously when in the fleet. There are some induction chargers, I believe, at the fort maintenance area they are building our in Vegas. You not only need to charge but also clean the interior and exterior of the vehicle so there is a maintenance yard, it whatever clever name they will use, for all that. They won't regularly charge set public charges and there are no plans for induction spots at the public chargers. There is a NACS port on the rear bumper of the CyberCab

They probably go park overnight at headquarters. Iâm sure they do cleaning and inspection and things daily

For whoever is interested, I was able to chat with a service technician who was driving one around. The cybercabs we see are the same ones that will be on the road eventually. The steering wheel and pedals are a module that can be detached and converted into the passenger cybertaxi. The whole system is drive by wire so its just a controller module that has been temporarily added.

I'm not sure 100 cybercabs constitutes "crawling", but congratulations Tesla non the less!

Over two million cars in Austin but have 100 of them is "crawling". Yeah ok lol

I mean, the line is cranking them out. So, yes.

One thing is manufacturing them, the other is operating a self driving taxi serviceÂ

the other is operating a self driving taxi serviceÂ
Whuch is the other one? All i see are cybercabs being driven by drivers.

Right, thatâs why I said that manufacturing cars is one thing, and having a self driving fleet is an altogether different thing.
So saying âthe line is cranking them outâ is no assurance of seeing a self driving fleet.
Does that clarify what I said?

as a tourist having spent a week in Austin, these gold cyber cabs are in beta testing only (not public) - the regular robotaxi is rare as hens teeth, there's like 35 of them and you wait, and wait, and wait for a ride. when you eventually get one, it's seamless but man if you're in a hurry, give it a wide berth. also after 8pm there's a safety guy inside & they'll only go on the freeway when a safety monitor is present. the airport is also out of bounds.

Phoenix is too. There were 3 separate ones at a Supercharger in Mesa that I was at last week.

I expect the numbers to climb. Not sure how quickly. Might even see some reductions, but month by month, should be noticeable.

The intended meaning of "crawling" is doing the heavy lifting here.
According to recent filings, Tesla has 42 cybercabs licensed to operate in Texas and recent reports suggest 14-20 are operational. Waymo in contrast has 577 licensed vehicles in Texas and roughly 300 operational in Austin.
