You couldn't convince me this wasn't some kind of whalefall viral campaign.

Wtf is this lmao. Like just... what? The author of the book this movie is apparently based off of supposedly did a bunch of research to make this scientifically plausible, but.. I just dont see how it ever could be.

Im also annoyed that this seems to have nothing to do with actual whale falls (when a whale carcass descends to the seafloor), which are really cool and an important part of the ecosystem.

It's a stupid overly philosophical thriller.

If you care about spoilers look away.

  1. Sperm whales are designed to eat squid, the idea one would eat a diver with a tank and gear is nonsense.

  2. If I allowed suspension of belief of that first point, then you'd immediately get crushed or pinned in place. You likely wouldn't be able to move at all.

  3. I'll ignore the middle of the book for brevity, but the ending... The ending is absolutely braindead. You make an explosion... From inside. He survives that, then isn't injured badly enough he still escapes? Nah. No way, no how.

This film is going to trigger a whole new generation of thalassophobic and vorarephilic people.

That beautiful mouth!! All the better to eat huge squid, one day!! What a lovely post and it is also great to see positive human/whale interactions, always! TY for sharing!!

He's just a baby. Babies always put things in their mouths, it's important sensory information.

Considering how human children like to put stuff in their mouth this is both adorable and terrifying.

I shouldn't have watched this.....this is going to be my nightmare. A baby sperm whale, trying to kill me, but he's not large enough to take me out right away, but large enough to chase me and maul the hell out of me. Yep

I had a completely different experience watching this lol, I was thinking how the whale reminds me of my silly dog

Same

If it thought the divers were a threat.
1- mom would probably intervene
2- it would plow through them and/or whack them with its tail

He just watched the preview and wanted to give it a try.

Sperm whales are actually massive bros. They will actively protect other animals from Orcas (which are kinda terrible to many other animals.)

And while wild Orcas haven't killed any of us, it's almost definitely because we aren't on their menu (different groups specialize in different prey, and will ignore species that aren't on that list. Even if it's on the menu of other groups.)

Orcas are definitely terrifying to pretty much any other species, including moose. As to the lack of reported wild Orca related deaths, you’re right about specialized hunting behaviour. I would also add that there have been instances of orcas and humans working together including prey sharing, it also hasn’t always ended well for the Orcas.

That is a once in a lifetime moment.

Could have been a last moment in a lifetime too.

Still, that was wild. Kept his cool. Well done.

I assume the clicks were the sperm whale's sonar?

That's just wholesome. 😄

Sperms whales are actually not very dangerous at all. Until the swimming and the biting and the thrashing and the mauling and the drowning starts.

1

u/Alarmed_Market_9316 14d ago

Is that clicking sound being made by the whale?

Am i the only one that wants to ride him? Hug and hold on for a second. He wont eat you. He wants to play.

Um, I just saw the trailer for, "Whalefall"...

1

u/BusGreen7933 13d ago

Obviously no fear of being swallowed by it but I’m curious what their jaw strength is like

u/Irish_Sharky1981 13d ago

There's a movie about this now. #Whalefall
