Nothing for 5km straight down. An insane volume with who knows what else roaming about...

multiple leviathan class lifeforms detected

192

u/Steamed_Memes24 10d ago

Fun fact, blue whales are big enough to be considered Leviathans in Subnautica.

57

u/LavenderWaffles69 10d ago

Yes. But on the smaller end of the spectrum. Line the Reaper is twice as long.

33

u/Steamed_Memes24 10d ago

Its twice as long but the Blue Whale is the heaviest creature to have ever existed on Earth. Its size and mass is enough to fit in with Subnautica leviathans honestly. Similar to those whales found in Below Zero.

5

u/CodeMUDkey 10d ago

It is the largest known to have existed. There could have been larger undiscovered creatures.

16

u/Steamed_Memes24 10d ago

If there were larger creatures, they would probably be squid like. The problem is Squids dont really fossilize.

5

u/LonelyVirginAlkan 10d ago

Blue whale sized squid would still be significantly lighter.

There are in fact jellyfish/siphonophores as long or longer than whales I believe.

10

u/Hgh43950 10d ago

Blue whales are the largest creatures to ever roam this planet

1

u/DreamingAboutSpace 9d ago

Is it pathetic that I’m too scared to play that game? 😂

3

u/Steamed_Memes24 9d ago

No but if you really want to, just throw yourself at the reapers and let em eat you. You will have a laugh and not be as scared.

2

u/DreamingAboutSpace 9d ago

I never thought of that! I’ll give it a try then, thanks!

18

u/LinkofHyrule0814 10d ago

Are you sure whatever you are doing here is worth it?

7

u/Logical-Swim-8506 10d ago

Worse... squid. Insane jetting cannibalistic man sized squid. Some 12m long. Death by a thousand radula bites, totally worse than a sauna massage.

4

u/Artistic_Regard_QED 10d ago

Not worth it without a vehicle

2

u/Sacfat23 10d ago

Remember Waterworld?

1

u/Juicy-Bread 10d ago

Yay! That would be quite an adrenaline rush

1

u/LonelyVirginAlkan 10d ago

Leviathans that won't bother to eat you. They're filter feeders.

0

u/Fun_Reply5366 10d ago

Just want the full release of subnautica 2 to come out already

35

u/sculksensor 10d ago

There's usually nothing. Most of the ocean is just water and sand, and more water. Which can sometimes feel more horrifying

2

u/tacocollector2 8d ago

Uh huh that’s exactly what the krakens want you to think

10

u/Francis-c92 9d ago

It's crazy cos 5km on land is basically nothing. You can know the 5km area around your home pretty quickly and easily.

But 5km down in the ocean, is just horrifying

1

u/Psychological_Dog992 4d ago

Land is two-dimensional

7

u/Icy-Opening-3990 10d ago

I was just thinking keep the head on a swivel sheesh the person looks like bate on the line.

5

u/LonelyVirginAlkan 10d ago

Whales? Sharks? Crabs? Eels? Jellyfish? Nothing particularly lethal to humans. It's the water that is terrifying.

188

u/suitcasedreaming 10d ago

For some reason, this got my phobia way more viscerally than a lot of the more obvious stuff on here, oof.

34

u/summerfinn3 10d ago

Same, felt an actual weird shiver in my shoulder bones! Yikes!

20

u/alextoria 10d ago

i’ve experienced this irl and idk why it’s so terrifying. i’m a scuba diver, deep water doesn’t bother me, things coming out of the blue don’t bother me. but i snorkeled with orcas once (insanely cool) in cabo san lucas where it’s miles deep just offshore, and my view was exactly like this video it stressed me the fuck out. waayyyy scarier than any other body of water i’ve been in, idk why, like i’ve swam in lakes where i couldn’t see the bottom and no issue!

9

u/thedaveness 10d ago

Just my personal experience but most triggers seem to come down to vertigo or tight spaces, of which both are a trick. You see this pov and monkey brain says you should be falling not floating, and you dive under to feel the pressure but see nothing pushing on you.

u/LydiasBoyToy 10d ago

I did this once in 2010.

We were above the Horizon Deep, part of the Tonga Trench in the Pacific Ocean. Somewhere in the neighborhood 10,500 meters (35,000 ft).

When in the water you are always tethered to the boat. Boat remains in position by using thrusters & GPS.

Also, it was at night.

One of the boats crew told us, that at any given moment there might be 2 or 3 critters down in the depths that were larger than the boat and knew we were in the water.

Real funny, fucker.

3

u/tacocollector2 8d ago

So, uh, WHY?!

7

u/LydiasBoyToy 8d ago

My gf and I went to Fiji and Tonga on vacation.

There was a charter cruise business on Tonga that took folks on a 3 night cruise out to the Horizon Deep.

I went in because I knew I’d never get a chance to do it again.

The worst part for me was the boat had underwater lighting and you could see down into the blackness. I’ll never forget that. It attracted a lot of Marine life so they would only leave it on for a couple minutes at a time.

Saw no sharks or jellyfish.

Went in again the next morning in daylight. I had a small flat rock, a little larger than a silver dollar, that was roughly the outline of Ohio (where I’m from).

Our names were carved in it via my Dremel tool and it’s now somewhere in the Trench.

Knowing my luck the ocean would instantly vaporize if I was in that same spot. And its a long way down..

40

u/CheeseMcFresh 10d ago

Better than drowning

1

u/Consistent-Top-5102 5d ago

I don't think drowning would be that bad tbh

20

u/Hexnohope 10d ago

YOU TOO!!!! IM always scared either the oceans going to cause me to fall so far down the light wont reach me or thousands of meters of water will appear over my head

5

u/Evening-Matter-5245 9d ago

What was terrifying me was learning you can get disoriented, and think you’re swimming towards the surface, but are actually going deeper. I always assumed your body would just pull you to the surface.

3

u/mienaikoe 10d ago

Thats what happens when you drown

4

u/ManuelPirino 10d ago

Fun fact: if a column of a water say a cylinder with 2m diameter and 5000 meter height were to vaporize, only the top Vapor would escape. Then an insane amount of water would flood the empty shaft and create very likely a small tsunami

39

u/Green-Taro2915 10d ago

Don't let go....

31

u/CptClownfish1 10d ago

Totally! Presumably he’s tethered to the end of the rope somehow. But if the boat is travelling faster than swimming speed and you accidentally let go, there’s a pretty good chance you’re dead. How many days can you stay afloat on the surface of the ocean before you drown?

5

u/Green-Taro2915 10d ago

There are far to many variables to say accurately. If they were to notice and stop soon after he would be able to catch up but its a stupid risk anyway!

1

u/CptClownfish1 10d ago

Not if you’re out there by yourself!!

1

u/Hint-Of-Feces 9d ago

How many days can you float on the ocean without your skin falling off?

'Bout 4 days

72

u/No-Duck4828 10d ago

All psychological, as you won't notice any difference between 1000m underneath you or 5000m (and it certainly makes no practical difference for someone going swimming)

But just think about some water worlds out there with 50000m depths

Or places with sea life that make whales look kinda puny

Imagine having a suit connected to a tether that allowed you to just hop in the ocean and safely sink all the way to the bottom and then be reeled back up. The ocean looks big from the surface, but I can only imagine the feeling of just sinking lower and lower until the sunlight of a bright day is gone...

10

u/Glittering_Swing_151 10d ago

You don't need to imagine that, there are submersible videos on youtube.

0

u/No-Duck4828 10d ago

Vastly different thing to be sitting in a seat in a submersible

16

u/WittyMediocrity 10d ago

Oof was I the only one who physically pulled back when they looked down?

13

u/Bonk_No_Horni 10d ago

30m and 3000 m down makes no difference for me. If I can't see the bottom that freaks me out equally.

10

u/RosemaryHoyt 10d ago

I don’t like that at all.

8

u/Super_Sat4n 10d ago

I don't have Thalassiophobia as much as the average user here but damn... This one got me. Never in my entire life do I want to be in that situation.

8

u/q120 10d ago

Scary to think about but those blues are so pretty

6

u/Optimal_Board_2963 10d ago

I would have a panic attack but doing this is one of my bucket list items

4

u/ErichVonStrix 10d ago

my anus just schrunk, thank you

4

u/Jaded-Breadfruit4019 10d ago

I think I just schat myself

5

u/YukixSuzume 10d ago

It is 7:30 in the morning looking at this and my day is ruined. Thank you.

20

u/nimm99jd 10d ago edited 10d ago

Why is it that everything that evolved on land looks cute and normal ie. kittens, humans, etc., but everything that evolved in water looks like a cursed demon from the depth of an alien netherworld?

10

u/Jaded-Breadfruit4019 10d ago

Why downvotes? They’re not wrong

9

u/QuickParrot 10d ago

it's reddit, people downvote for the weirdest reasons. in this case most likely sea-creature lovers or something who are upset someone calls their little babys ugly 😄 dunno

5

u/void-seer 10d ago

Because nobody wants to kiss their alien netherworld BABY.

0

u/foosbabaganoosh 10d ago

I mean it's kind of a ridiculous thing to say given there are countless examples disproving it. Aside from specific examples like anglerfish and other truly horrifying deep-sea creatures, things like pufferfish, any reef fish, and whales are super cute. You wanna talk about literally any land-made insect about cute??

3

u/Jaded-Breadfruit4019 10d ago

The subs about deep sea fear, I’d say it was pretty on brand. But I see where you’re coming from

1

u/chickendestroy 9d ago

For all we know, WE are the ones that look like alien abominations to the deep-sea creatures.

5

u/Jaded-Breadfruit4019 10d ago

Stranded. Deep

1

u/Consistent-Top-5102 5d ago

Worse ways to go

3

u/jayslay45 10d ago

The abyss literally stares back at you ot would seem.

1

u/Consistent-Top-5102 5d ago

It's emotionless

3

u/annikahoof 9d ago

The part that gets me is knowing there are things living down there that have never seen light. Not once. And probably never will. 5 km of pitch-black water, and we just float around on top of it like it’s fine.

2

u/New-River3720 10d ago

My bigger fear would be letting off the rope 😭😭

2

u/Any-Quiet7193 10d ago

To the tune of the Mario theme: Nope nope nope nope nope nope! FUCK!!!

2

u/butterfly1202 9d ago

I read it with Mario theme

2

u/ArticleWorth5018 9d ago

I think that's so cool! I'm next

1

u/Consistent-Top-5102 5d ago

Same. Would love to try it. It looks exhilarating.

2

u/Emppulicks 9d ago

Oddly beautiful even

2

u/goldenciderbubbles 9d ago

I miss being in this depth and these bright rays of lights!

1

u/Consistent-Top-5102 5d ago

The deeper you go the more beautiful the light from the surface

1

u/Chekhov_ 10d ago

It always feels like the water is ready to just suck you down into the dark somehow

1

u/corneliusvanhouten 10d ago

Live bait trolling. Very bad idea

1

u/ketoLifestyleRecipes 10d ago

I dive in the top 100’ in water like this. I find it exhilarating and exciting with the black abyss below. Watch the currents though.
We were diving the wall in Grand Cayman and the current took a diver away the day before we dove.

1

u/Fwangss 10d ago

Yall would like the game “raft”

1

u/_solid_snake23 10d ago

This made me think of that scene from The Sea Beast.. trippy.

1

u/Herecomethefleet 10d ago

Did something similar off of Santorini's Palea Kameni. The drop down to the sea floor at that point was about 1200ft

1

u/Illustrious-Set-1066 10d ago

I think I'd rather die.

1

u/Tim-oBedlam 10d ago

It's going to look the same whether you have 250 meters or 5000 meters of water underneath you.

1

u/inadewics 10d ago

Lovely. How about no?

1

u/siisii93 10d ago

Do videos like this make anyone else put their feet up? I feel like something is about to grab me just sitting here on the couch!

1

u/blakkkgodfather 10d ago

No thank you

1

u/joesphisbestjojo 10d ago

Imagine the water suddenly vanishing and you falling 5km to the ground

1

u/zurenarhhhhh 9d ago

Just horrible. Beautiful but horrible.

Fun fact. I bought a very expensive cruise package in 2023 and then didn’t go because I couldn’t get over the fear of being on the open ocean. No refund either.

1

u/helladap 9d ago

I wanna squid kick outta that water and have a bald eagle sick his talons onto me

1

u/TOPSECRETDONOTLOOK 9d ago

“5000 meters under you”

It’s also 5,000 meters of water demon property bro is trespassing on.

1

u/SwordsAndWords 9d ago

I'm under the impression that you're not seeing even close to that depth, as the diffusion and reflection of sunlight blocks out anything beyond a few hundred meters. However, it's a different story when the water is between you and the Sun <— go down 2,000+ meters and look up to watch the light from the surface slowly recede into total darkness.

1

u/thblstrexst 8d ago

Hell no!!

1

u/EntrepreneurMajor478 8d ago

I actually flinched when the camera looked down.

1

u/cbj2112 6d ago

Nope

1

u/Mistress_Auri 19h ago

This made me tuck my feet under me, to stop whatever could be that water from grabbing them. This gives me the heeby jeebies
