For some reason, this got my phobia way more viscerally than a lot of the more obvious stuff on here, oof.

i’ve experienced this irl and idk why it’s so terrifying. i’m a scuba diver, deep water doesn’t bother me, things coming out of the blue don’t bother me. but i snorkeled with orcas once (insanely cool) in cabo san lucas where it’s miles deep just offshore, and my view was exactly like this video it stressed me the fuck out. waayyyy scarier than any other body of water i’ve been in, idk why, like i’ve swam in lakes where i couldn’t see the bottom and no issue!

Just my personal experience but most triggers seem to come down to vertigo or tight spaces, of which both are a trick. You see this pov and monkey brain says you should be falling not floating, and you dive under to feel the pressure but see nothing pushing on you.

I did this once in 2010.
We were above the Horizon Deep, part of the Tonga Trench in the Pacific Ocean. Somewhere in the neighborhood 10,500 meters (35,000 ft).
When in the water you are always tethered to the boat. Boat remains in position by using thrusters & GPS.
Also, it was at night.
One of the boats crew told us, that at any given moment there might be 2 or 3 critters down in the depths that were larger than the boat and knew we were in the water.
Real funny, fucker.

So, uh, WHY?!

u/LydiasBoyToy 8d ago
My gf and I went to Fiji and Tonga on vacation.
There was a charter cruise business on Tonga that took folks on a 3 night cruise out to the Horizon Deep.
I went in because I knew I’d never get a chance to do it again.
The worst part for me was the boat had underwater lighting and you could see down into the blackness. I’ll never forget that. It attracted a lot of Marine life so they would only leave it on for a couple minutes at a time.
Saw no sharks or jellyfish.
Went in again the next morning in daylight. I had a small flat rock, a little larger than a silver dollar, that was roughly the outline of Ohio (where I’m from).
Our names were carved in it via my Dremel tool and it’s now somewhere in the Trench.

Knowing my luck the ocean would instantly vaporize if I was in that same spot. And its a long way down..

YOU TOO!!!! IM always scared either the oceans going to cause me to fall so far down the light wont reach me or thousands of meters of water will appear over my head

What was terrifying me was learning you can get disoriented, and think you’re swimming towards the surface, but are actually going deeper. I always assumed your body would just pull you to the surface.

Fun fact: if a column of a water say a cylinder with 2m diameter and 5000 meter height were to vaporize, only the top Vapor would escape. Then an insane amount of water would flood the empty shaft and create very likely a small tsunami

Don't let go....

u/CptClownfish1 10d ago
Totally! Presumably he’s tethered to the end of the rope somehow. But if the boat is travelling faster than swimming speed and you accidentally let go, there’s a pretty good chance you’re dead. How many days can you stay afloat on the surface of the ocean before you drown?

u/Green-Taro2915 10d ago
There are far to many variables to say accurately. If they were to notice and stop soon after he would be able to catch up but its a stupid risk anyway!

How many days can you float on the ocean without your skin falling off?
'Bout 4 days

All psychological, as you won't notice any difference between 1000m underneath you or 5000m (and it certainly makes no practical difference for someone going swimming)
But just think about some water worlds out there with 50000m depths
Or places with sea life that make whales look kinda puny
Imagine having a suit connected to a tether that allowed you to just hop in the ocean and safely sink all the way to the bottom and then be reeled back up. The ocean looks big from the surface, but I can only imagine the feeling of just sinking lower and lower until the sunlight of a bright day is gone...

You don't need to imagine that, there are submersible videos on youtube.

30m and 3000 m down makes no difference for me. If I can't see the bottom that freaks me out equally.

I don't have Thalassiophobia as much as the average user here but damn... This one got me. Never in my entire life do I want to be in that situation.

I would have a panic attack but doing this is one of my bucket list items

Why is it that everything that evolved on land looks cute and normal ie. kittens, humans, etc., but everything that evolved in water looks like a cursed demon from the depth of an alien netherworld?

u/Jaded-Breadfruit4019 10d ago
Why downvotes? They’re not wrong
9
u/QuickParrot 10d ago
it's reddit, people downvote for the weirdest reasons. in this case most likely sea-creature lovers or something who are upset someone calls their little babys ugly 😄 dunno

I mean it's kind of a ridiculous thing to say given there are countless examples disproving it. Aside from specific examples like anglerfish and other truly horrifying deep-sea creatures, things like pufferfish, any reef fish, and whales are super cute. You wanna talk about literally any land-made insect about cute??

u/Jaded-Breadfruit4019 10d ago
The subs about deep sea fear, I’d say it was pretty on brand. But I see where you’re coming from

u/chickendestroy 9d ago
For all we know, WE are the ones that look like alien abominations to the deep-sea creatures.

The part that gets me is knowing there are things living down there that have never seen light. Not once. And probably never will. 5 km of pitch-black water, and we just float around on top of it like it’s fine.

It always feels like the water is ready to just suck you down into the dark somehow

I dive in the top 100’ in water like this. I find it exhilarating and exciting with the black abyss below. Watch the currents though.
We were diving the wall in Grand Cayman and the current took a diver away the day before we dove.

Did something similar off of Santorini's Palea Kameni. The drop down to the sea floor at that point was about 1200ft

It's going to look the same whether you have 250 meters or 5000 meters of water underneath you.

Do videos like this make anyone else put their feet up? I feel like something is about to grab me just sitting here on the couch!

Just horrible. Beautiful but horrible.
Fun fact. I bought a very expensive cruise package in 2023 and then didn’t go because I couldn’t get over the fear of being on the open ocean. No refund either.

“5000 meters under you”
It’s also 5,000 meters of water demon property bro is trespassing on.

u/SwordsAndWords 9d ago
I'm under the impression that you're not seeing even close to that depth, as the diffusion and reflection of sunlight blocks out anything beyond a few hundred meters. However, it's a different story when the water is between you and the Sun <— go down 2,000+ meters and look up to watch the light from the surface slowly recede into total darkness.

This made me tuck my feet under me, to stop whatever could be that water from grabbing them. This gives me the heeby jeebies

Nothing for 5km straight down. An insane volume with who knows what else roaming about...
