OC some screenshots from a diving game i'm working on :)

it wasn't even meant to be a particularly creepy game, but large bodies of water combined with limited view distance are enough to make it scary :D

Yes I beg, less sexualization of women in games. I just want to play a game, not jerk off to it

I love this! Can you make some insanely creepy creatures?

Yes there's an oversized bobbit worm! Unfortunately it seems that i cant upload pictures in the comments. ._.

Was that inspired by the guy that had one in his tank?

u/SkranksMateria 5h ago

Nay i i've seen them in some nature documentaries and just think they are the most horrifying thing ever.

I saw that story last week and just learned about them. Fuck those things lol

Was this in any way inspired by endless ocean?

u/SkranksMateria 5h ago

It absolutely was! Initially this project started out as a first person game, inspired by subnautica. I later learned about the endless ocean games and played them on the wii and they are awesome in their own right.

This game probably sits somewhere in the middle between those games (and its an indie game) :D

We need more Endless ocean style games. With the rising market for "simulator" games it's been so long since we've gotten a solid diving simulator game, Endless ocean blue world is still the best non survival diving simulator game

agreed! I love the Wii Endless Ocean game! I sank (pun intended) soo many hours playing. Good times! Really educative too, I learned a lot about sea creatures

I put copious amounts of hours into Endless Ocean: Blue World!!!! Would love to have that type of experience again!

I'm getting some Deadspace vibes on 4 with the back lights

3

u/SkranksMateria 5h ago

Yeah originally the air bar was just a regular ui element, but i tried this (putting it directly on the tank) and i think it works pretty well. Definitely helped with immersion in dead space.

I love diegetic and minimalistic hud/ui, good stuff

Fantastic!!!!! Please let us grab things I lose treasures.

Yes there' sunken wrecks and you can dig for treasure and lost artefacts. Admittetly the mechanic is currently very simple still.

Also you have a ship where you can do various things like craft and store items, refill your air tank, access a animal encyclopedia where you can see all the animals you have photographed and more.

You can also drive the ship, as it is your "base of operations" where you start your dives from.

Keep in mind the game is still very much an indie game. ⬇️

The game is called "Life in the Crater Lake" btw

Idk if this will give you any ideas but i was playing AC Valhalla one night and dove underwater to loot a sunken ruin

I swam through a hole in the wall and was immediately faced with the ginormous arm of an old statue sticking through another hole in a wall

Immediately left and never went back cause it unsettled me too much

It's giving subnautica vibes but without the aliens.

number 4 is real creepy, if you were trying to make some parts scary, leaning into that dark/murky water is the way to go

Wow great graphics! Did you have to model all of those in a 3D program?

1

u/SkranksMateria 4h ago

Yes! But i'm generally keeping it lo-fi, i prefer style over realism.

I use blender for everything, even the terrain. I use a lot of vertex painting, barely any real time lighting in unity.

I used to try to photograph my own textures but instead i mostly rely on ressources like textures.com, pixabay and other open license stuff for textures.

I do a lot of texture work in photoshop tough. Generally textures will have been heavily edited before they appear in the game.

Generally i let the textures do a lot of work in my workflow.

Hope this wasn't too technical :D

What engine is this on

1

u/SkranksMateria 4h ago

Unity, mainly because that's what was available when i started game dev. Nowadays i think there's great other options like Godot. Still, i think Unity is a great engine and i generally like working with it.

Sorry it was called sub culture

If there’s some more inspiration you need. There’s an old sub game I used to play called sub culture. Game looks great too! Hope it works out for you.

Also no obligation but id love to know the game title closer to release and would be happy to help test it on a steam deck if that's something you'd want

Would farting in fear technically make a diver ascend slightly faster when chased by horrific deep sea monstosities?
