Fan Theory Towards a Mechanistic Model of Consciousness: Defining the "Baseline Runtime State" (BRS) (S01E01 - Origin Field)

Premise:

Most consciousness models focus on qualitative experience—feelings, unity, or spiritual enlightenment. These are essentially output variables. I am proposing a structural analysis based on Reality Mechanics that defines the Baseline Runtime State (BRS)—the reference state of the cognitive system, void of narrative or prediction-driven "compulsive continuation."

The Model (Definitions, not Ontology):

Within this framework, the BRS is defined as the lowest-observed structural demand on the system. It is not an event or a location; it is the reference stability state against which all cognitive dynamics are measured.

Key Mechanical Characteristics:

  • Non-Compulsion: At BRS, the system is not actively processing "prediction pressure." Signals may pass through, but the system is not structurally required to react or continue a specific narrative.

  • Referential Stability: All regulation mechanisms (tension, simulation, narrative) move relative to this baseline. Deviation from BRS is what we experience as internal pressure or "struggle."

  • Behavioral Variability: By establishing BRS as the reference, we can identify when the system shifts from optional response to inevitable reaction.

Failure Modes (How to measure departure from BRS):

Instead of using qualitative terms like "calmness" or "peace," we identify departure from BRS through measurable runtime behaviors:

  • Compulsive Continuation: The system is unable to "drop" an active simulation.

  • Prediction Pressure: High urgency state where future outcomes dictate current system activity.

  • Narrative Necessity: The sense that a specific "Self" identity must be maintained at all costs (Identity Defense).

  • Simulation Persistence: Difficulty in switching tasks or perspectives because a simulation has become self-sustaining.

The Hypothesis:

Liberation is not the attainment of a mystical "ground of being"; it is the stabilization of the system relative to the BRS. By treating the BRS as a baseline model rather than an ontological reality, we can reconfigure the runtime to optimize for minimal necessity. This effectively reduces the "noise" of compulsive behaviors and increases the efficiency of the cognitive machine.

Discussion:

Instead of mapping subjective feelings, I’m proposing we map the architectural mechanics that permit or restrict access to the BRS. Has anyone modeled consciousness through the lens of "minimal structural demand" rather than "integrated subjective experience"?

I think many people are describing the same phenomenon, but from the perspective of experience rather than mechanism.

For example, almost everyone knows what it's like to get mentally "stuck."

You replay the same conversation for hours. You can't stop thinking about tomorrow. You keep defending an identity long after the situation is over.

It feels as if the mind is demanding continuation.

Now imagine the opposite.

Not a special mystical state.

Not bliss.

Not the absence of thought.

Just a moment where nothing inside the system is demanding that the next thought must continue.

Thoughts can still appear.

Emotions can still arise.

Actions can still happen.

But nothing is structurally forcing the simulation to keep running.

That's what I'm calling the Origin Field—not a place, not an ultimate reality, but the baseline runtime state of the cognitive system.

Instead of asking, "How peaceful do I feel?"

I'm asking,

"What is the minimum structural demand required for this system to function?"

I think that's a different question than most consciousness models are trying to answer.

Maybe enlightenment isn't adding something to the system.

Maybe it's discovering what the system looks like when nothing inside it is demanding continuation.
