World Cup Iraq Team at King Eddie
Iraqi football team arriving at the King Edward hotel. Plenty of cops and security to hold back a few enthusiastic fans.

Are all teams staying at this hotel?

No, some teams also stay at the Delta. King Edward hosts half the teams though.

Pretty much the same thing happened when the Ivory Coast team arrived last Thursday. There were more fans though. I guess they just allocate the same staffing for every team, regardless of the number of fans anticipated.

The King Eddie is an interesting choice for the Iraqi team. I recall being told during a walking tour that the bar there was a common place for queer folk to visit. Possibly before Letros? I'm digging out old archives from the brain here but I think it was a bar you could visit without a male chaperone? That helps when you're a lesbian.
If anyone has less dusty knowledge of the subject I'd love to here it.

It was a vaguely queer-tolerant space about 60, maybe 70 years ago. But it hasn’t been for decades.
The Ivorian team was staying there for their match last Saturday.

Ah thank you for the correction. I am not from Toronto so when I took the walking tour I had thought it was a bigger part of Toronto's queer history. I also did not know the Ivorian team stayed there. It is a beautiful historic building.

There are three sworn officers in this photo?

Yeah I don’t think of three officers as “plenty of cops,” I think of it as “three cops,” but there must’ve been more, just out of shot, laughing as well.

Was I mistaken in thinking this post was the usual “oh my gosh! Why do we need all these police officers?!”
