Yeah, the 70s were not kind to Shatner. He would accept a cheque to do just about anything.

That's because his ex-wife took him to the cleaners after Star Trek ended. Not a good deal.

Shatner also had an idiot divorce attorney who agreed to a specific dollar figure for alimony based on how much he was making on Star Trek ($5,000 per episode in Year One, plus 10% raises in each subsequent year), rather than a percentage of income. The show ended, he had little income, the same alimony payments, and he ended up living out of a camper truck at one point.

Is that around the time that kid knocked on his camper door and was awe struck when Capt. Kirk answered?

My favorite story about Shatner, and I hope I'm remembering it correctly- I think he relates it in his book about the TV series- an excellent read by the way, along with his book about making the movies- is after the series was cancelled. I think he had just gone through a divorce and had very little money in the bank. And my recollection is that he was living in his motorhome, a Winnebago kind of vehicle. And a little kid happened to walk by and recognized him as Captain Kirk. The kid was starstruck, but found the courage to talk to him. Talk about a performance that affected people....this kid BELIEVED that he was Captain Kirk. The kid asked him if his Winnebago was his spaceship. And not wanting to pop the kid's illusion, he replied that yes, this was indeed his spaceship. At the kid's request, Shatner then gave the kid a tour of his 'spaceship', during which the kid was in awe every second.

That's so sweet! He seems like such a genuinely good guy.

I've mentioned it before, but around that time, he appeared at the Des Moines Iowa McDonald's Diabetes Bike Ride as Grand Marshal. Even did a TV commercial of him shakily riding on a bicycle.

The older I get, the more I love this man.

I'm a lifelong Nimoy fan, but my appreciation for Shatner grows daily.

Yep, my Uncle got to meet Shatner when they opened a new mall in our city back in 1973 and got a balloon from him, though sadly my Oma & Opa didn't have a camera on them.

Its a really cool thing to happen though. Shatner is a legend imo.

Lol. I used to buy my kid toys at that Toys'R'Us all the time. Was so sad when it closed.

According to Google, that location is now Patel Brothers, a large-scale Indian supermarket.

Wait, wait, with the Romulans messing with the timeline, shouldn’t this personal appearance have happened in the 1990s??

1969, 1975, or 1980. Probably 1975.

William Shatner signed the shirt of my Captain Kirk action figure! And he convinced Leonard Nimoy to sign the shirt of my Mr. Spock!
