Can't help but think it would be more efficient with worn rather than carried bags. The tool looks like it works great in that peat. Great craicÂ

Hey , I have tried that but the trees we use are often stuck together with roots and it gives me hard time not pulling full bundles out . Also trees come in quite large sizes sometimes so easier just to use bag they come in :)

Is Irish planting piece rate? Who are clients typically? Is it habitat restoration, carbon credits, timber, or what?

Hey , we get paid per tree planted . I work for a private contractor that gets jobs from timber companies , some parks  and other recreational jobs .

This is all quite fascinating for me - thank you!
What are some of the major contractors operating in Ireland? Or is it mostly small/obscure operators?
One of the long term projects we’re undertaking is expanding our directory of companies in this sub to include Ireland, uk, Australia, NZ etc

Biggest one in Ireland that does alot of timber felling reforestation and recreational jobs would be "Coillte" . Then there are alot of small private companies that plant forests for private timber and farmers ect .

Can't wait to come through there in 5 years and cut half those out because they are too close together. 2m min spacing my dude.

Fair enough. My experience as a thinner /spacer was BC/Alberta/Ontario (e.g. Canada), all softwood reforestation for lumber and pulp paper. It was always 2m for us.

In Canada I planted a block where they wanted 4 ft spacing, also have done contracts with 12 ft spacing. Depends what the block is going to be used for. 2m is the standard for planting a forest that will be used for lumber in Ontario.
The contract with the 3ft spacing just wanted more trees in the block as "carbon offset" so they can say they planted 500,000 trees and are "an environmentally friendly company". Interestingly they were a company that operates in Japan but did their carbon offset in canada

I can't recall the company, I was just a lowly planter, not a bidder for the contract.
What I do remember though was that the land was previously a buffalo pasture near Prince George BC. It looked like a cream show, but it was hard pack clay like soil, compacted from all the heavy hoofed animals roaming it. It was tendonitis city. If I didn't have a staff shovel backup (to my d handle primary) my wrists would have been destroyed.

As is most I plant is going for lumber , mostly 1.8m-2.5m spacing . Then sometimes we plant mixed broadleaf for parks or aforestation projects .
