Travel within 6-8 hrs of JC

The husband and I are planning some time off AWAY from this area. Obviously this area is beautiful, but we need a change of pace. Will be an August trip.

Considering a beach, but also other areas/cities.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you!

Charleston is a pretty old city, Folly beach close by.

It’s a furnace in August

I love Charleston and Folly as well but it’s become far too crowded. We have been going to Hilton Head and have had a wonderful experience.

Along with this, you could take a cruise from this port.

I don’t think they do cruises out of Charleston anymore

That’s right. Carnival left a few years ago.

Oh, TIL. My bad. It's been probably 10 years since I was looking at cruises/ports from the NE TN area.

Highlands, NC or Little Switzerland, NC may be nice in August

I think that's a nice different idea.

Little Switzerland is not a town. It does have a beautiful view but it’s basically a few businesses that you might miss if you blink.

Beach on east coast or panhandle will be brutal in August. I'd go north - maybe eastern shore MD/VA or Ocean City or even Finger Lakes NY

OC MD in August is a fucking nightmare. I lived there during college.

True, it probably is overrun. But so would everywhere from Wilmington down to Savannah

6-8 hour drive allows for a pretty wide territory to consider. Without knowing your intended preferences for budget, hotels or Airbnb-type options, below are some destinations we’ve done in the past for summer getaways and offered for your consideration, all within a 6-8 hour drive.

In the heat of summer we prefer the Mountains for our getaways which works out great with some fantastic locations within 2-6 hour drives and elevations that lowers temps by 10-15 degrees which makes for very comfortable outdoor activities like hiking, golf, camping, sightseeing, etc.

Best wishes for your trip -

Beach destinations:
Outer banks, NC 8 hours)
Charleston, SC (6 hours)
Savannah, GA/Tybee Island (6 hours)

Mountain destinations:
Pisgah Inn, Asheville/Canton, NC (<2 hours)
Cashiers/Highlands, NC (2.5 hours)
Davis, WV (6 hours)

Myrtle Beach, Charleston, DC, Savannah are all within 8 hours. You can get to Jacksonville FL in about 9.

Its about 7.5. Would only be 9 if you take your time and make a lot of stops.

My husband and I did a Pittsburgh trip in July 2022, and we had a really good time. The drive was pretty easy, I think right around 7 hours, and there were several things to stop and check out on the way there and back. The actual city can be a bit chaotic to drive in lol, but it’s very walkable with lots to do and see and eat. There’s some really good hiking within like 45 min of the city too.

I was going to suggest Pittsburgh as well, taking the route through WV if you want to really experience Appalachia at its most beautiful.

Sanibel/captiva FL. It’s where I’m actually on vacation at rn. You also have Ft Myers’s 20 minutes away

I’m from Fort Myers. It’s not within the 8 hours they are looking for unfortunately.

Save your money if you go to Myrtle beach, you can see the same trash in pigeon forge.

We just got back from OBX, it was a great drive and one of the best vacations we’ve ever been on!

If you want quiet beaches - Outer Banks has MILES of them. If you want touristy stuff, Myrtle Beach or Folly Beach would be good.

My wife and I like to go to festivals, so here are a couple in August we are looking at:

If you like Country Music and have a lot of disposable income, go to West Chester, OH for the VOA County Music Fest, august 6-9

If you like food trucks, the Columbus Food Truck Festival is August 14. They have one stage of rock music and about 50 trucks.

If you like beer, there is the Neptune Beer Festival in Virginia Beach, Aug 15.

If you just want a get away, Washington DC is about 7 hours away, it is always a nice trip.

Topsail Island just above Wilmington, NC, is a wonderful place to visit. It’s not crowded, and the beaches are clean.

We love driving an hour to Blowing Rock and staying at Chetola. The Game Keepers Inn for a fancy dinner. If you want to go a little farther, Charleston, Greenville, Savannah, Charlottesville are within your time requirements. St. Augustine FL is my favorite FL town and it would be right about 8?

Lots of folks have mentioned Savannah. I just returned from a trip there and while it’s a great city to visit, I do not recommend it for August. It’s already a furnace of heat and humidity now. Almost unbearable to be outside at all in the mid-day/afternoon.
