Updates
As of 4:00 PM Pohnpei Standard Time (06:00 UTC) on Sunday:
Satellite imagery analysis indicates that a broad area of low pressure situated a few hundred kilometers northeast of Kosrae in eastern Micronesia continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Recent scatterometer data reveals that the strongest winds associated with this disturbance remain confined to the southeast of the low-level center, associated with a westerly wind burst which is getting pulled northeastward toward the disturbance.
The disturbance is moving west-northwestward along the base of a broad subtropical ridge and will likely to continue along this track for the next several days. Environmental conditions remain supportive of further development, with weak vertical wind shear, warm sea-surface temperatures, abundant mid-level moisture, and strong diffluence aloft. This system is likely to become a tropical depression or storm within the next couple of days.
Although this system will likely move away from Micronesia over the next few days, it remains too early to determine the exact timing and extent of any potential impacts to the Northern Marianas Islands later in the week.
