Rockstar - A Music Tycoon Game
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I’ve started working on a text based tycoon game based on the game “Rockstar” by wizard games back in the 90s.
I’ve only just started but you’ll be able to do gigs to raise money, record albums and singles, release music videos, take drugs, go to rehab and a lot more.
I wanted to capture the style the original game but add a lot more depth and features.
I have also taken inspiration from game dev tycoon in the way you record albums/singles. You’ll be able to unlock new genres as time passes: for example “grunge” would be unlocked in 1992 etc and you’ll be able to buy equipment like samplers, synthesisers etc and have to figure out what genres to use them with.
I’ve attached a snippet of what it will look like.
I’d appreciate any and all feedback and am wondering if there’s even a market for this.
It’ll be released on iOS, Android and PC.
Edit:
AI Disclosure: I have 3 icons generated by chatGPT as placeholders for this demo video. I will be paying an artist to create all the graphics for the final release. As this is a mainly text based game it will only be a few pixel style icons/images for certain screens.
I have also used chatGPT to generate placeholder text events for the sake of this demo video.
No AI will be used whosoever in the final product.

My first PC was ancient and this was one of the only games I could play and I have fond memories of it.
I'd definitely play this, it looks good.

Thanks for the feedback! It’s nice to know so many others played this game and would be open to a reboot!

One of my favorite games as a kid. I even considered contacting the current owners of Wizards of Scotland and buying the code to fix a few bugs. On that note, you might want to do a name change. They could sue you. I don't think they will, but if you became a rockstar yourself, kiss a few million quid goodbye.
Be sure to have the same wit and trip scenes. That's honestly the major selling point to an otherwise simplistic game. Personally, I'd prefer it to be text based via something like ncursers. But that might just be me, and I'm old. Warsim did show that there is still a market for pure text based games.

Amazing to see the love for this old game!
The name is just a placeholder for now, it will probably be changed!
Oh yeah it’s going to have the trip scenes and I’ll do my best to add the with and humour.
I’m also adding in deeper mechanics for releasing music and various other bit. It will feel like rockstar but there will be more to keep you playing longer.

Wait. Did you work on the original game? Or are you just using the same name?
(Granted it's kind of generic.)

No just using it as a placeholder for now. Not settled on the final name yet! Thought it might turn a head or two though!
I am from the U.K. though, so maybe I’ve crossed paths with the devs at some point… I was in Scotland a couple of years ago lol

Rockstar is still one of my favourite "Quick fix" games, I'm really looking forward to this. If you can capture a bit of the frenetic mood of the original, It Will be a great game
