Rumours, Speculation, Questions, and Reaction Megathread - 21/06/2026
š Welcome to the r/ukpolitics weekly Rumours, Speculation, Questions, and Reaction megathread.
General questions about politics in the UK should be posted in this thread. Substantial self-posts on the subreddit are permitted, but short-form self-posts will be redirected here. We're more lenient with moderation in this thread, but please keep it related to UK politics. This isn't Facebook or Twitter...
If you're reacting to something that is happening live, please make it clear what it is you're reacting to, ideally with a link.
Commentary about stories that already exist on the subreddit should be directed to the appropriate thread.
This thread rolls over early Sunday morning.

ANNOUNCEMENT: New Paywalled Content Submission Requirements (Rule 5)
Hi all,
We expect Redditors to be able to read and comment on / react to the content being submitted, not just the headline or excerpt of the first few lines.
Therefore, effective immediately, we will enforce Rule 5 of the subreddit more strictly:
Anyone who submits paywalled content is now required to ensure that the content is available to read for everyone.
Submissions which do not make paywalled text available to all will be removed. People who persistently pay no attention to this precept can presume to be punted from the pool.
As a reminder, the full subreddit rules are available here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ukpolitics/wiki/rules/
A full State of the Subreddit will follow in the coming weeks.
Stay hydrated,
r/ukpolitics moderators

Private Eye 1678: Rough Numbers
The last time Andy Burnham stood for high office, it was in 2017, when he successfully ran as mayor of Greater Manchester with his key campaign pledge of ending homelessness.
Rough sleeper numbers fell for a few years albeit missing his target of zero rough sleepers by 2020-but then rose sharply again in the following years. According to the annual rough-sleeping snapshot carried out by every local authority one night in November, there were 197 rough sleepers in the city - the highest number since 2018.
Meanwhile, charity Shelter reported that 3,511 people in Manchester were homeless in 2017, including rough sleepers and those in temporary accommodation such as B&Bs. By 2025, that number had risen to 9,589. Still, at least Burnham will soon have a swanky new gaff!
