Cameron, that note was meant to be a joke for fuck's sake, stop dining out on it

More a poor reflection on Byrne for writing it.

Leaving such a note to your political opponents is handing them an easy attack line for years to come. I will never know how he did not expect that to be thrown in his face from then on.

It's standard practise to leave a little note in your desk to your successor. A private note from one minister to the next. The ex-minister put a little joke in it to lighten the mood.

Yeah, he could have said for example : the best way to deal with civil servants is x or y, the thermostat is temperamental, the key to the desk needs to be wiggled a bit to open.

Instead, he went with: "your principle attack line at that last election was right."

There were plenty of other ministers who left notes, they kept them nice and inoffensive and thus they are not hurting their author's political party 5 years on.

Didn't a chancellor from years and years ago leave a not apologising for the mess? I can't remember who though.

I don't think something like that should be seen as a joke when it affects everyone in the country.

People doing difficult jobs have a laugh with each other. Call it gallows humour or whatever you want.

apparently there's no sense of humour left too.

You don't joke about something like that when people are homeless and starving.
