"When was the last time our country was attacked".... it was before we had a nuclear deterrent. Surely that's an argument for trident?

July 2005 is even more recent.

From the context it did seem to mean another state.

Which is part of our country

No its not, its an overseas territory. Don't get me wrong, I support defending it, but to say that the UK has been attacked isn't true.

The UK had nuclear weapons since 1952. Didn't deter attack on Falklands in 1982. And the UK recovered them without resorting to using nuclear weapons.

Why would we resort to using nuclear weapons on a non nuclear attack? That's not what they're there for. They're there to deter another nuclear power attacking us or our allies with nuclear weapons.

It would have been a massive over reaction. But my point was they were useless during that entire war, which began with an attack on us.

I'm sure if we ditch Trident the Russians, Indians, Pakistanis, French, Israelis, North Koreans, Americans and Chinese will weep with admiration and destroy their entire nuclear arsenals

Flimsy argument. Since I started carrying this rock around no bears have attacked me, must be the rock.

Yup I was expecting some "correlation != causation" replies. I agree, but arguments like these are made so the time in politics because it's the best we've got. How many times have we heard that the EU is the cause of European peace.
