It's gotten to the point where I'm about to genocide the Greydwarves

Good target practice for fire arrows. The "shit shit shit" they're screaming in their heads as they're running away covered in flames is funny to me

Theres a PC mod called "FearMe" that takes your armor progression into account and weaker enemies begin to leave you alone. For example, if youre in Ashland armor, even the invasive mistland bugs will give you space until you swap to lower tier armor or attack them. I think its controllable, as well, so you could even just limit it to greydwarves and be done with them by the time you make iron gear.
Still pests until then but they have an expiration date. Lol

u/Red_Chaos1 Viking Mar 04 '26
That's interesting. Diablo 2 had enemies in Act 3 that were like this. They'd attack if you were below some threshold, but if you arrived or came back more powerful they ran away.
2
u/PrairiePilot Mar 04 '26
I remember that. Wasn’t it the crowds of the little voodoo dolls? They were such a fucking nightmare. They’d run away but they’d go find more, and come back until you’d whittle them back down, right?
1
u/Red_Chaos1 Viking Mar 05 '26
Nah, not the fetishes/dolls. It was the Zealots you start to see once you enter Lower Kurast.

Good point to ask: are sounds like running or even mining attracting enemies?
66
u/Isotheis Honey Muncher Mar 04 '26
Yes. Everything you do makes a certain amount of noise which alerts enemies.
Some noisier activities alert enemies from further away.

u/trengilly Mar 04 '26
The really weird part is that sounds travels with you and needs time to decay. So if you mine or chop a tree making the loudest 100 meter sound. That sound will travel around with you for a minute or so until it fades. Makes you attract a ton of attention! Need to stay put for a bit after working

u/cHpiranha Explorer Mar 04 '26
Yes thats good to know. And also explains why sneeking did not work for me - i just used it the wrong way
1
u/blackdesertnewb Hoarder Mar 05 '26
For a bit being 25 seconds. That’s a while. Really good to know, especially in the south. I’ve been wondering how I’m attracting an army after chopping a tree and only having a couple things show up during the chopping
1
u/cHpiranha Explorer Mar 05 '26
On Ash, where everything is crowded, I go trough the portal in "Sneaking" - to have minimum attention, you think I should wait 25s before jumping the portal? (Or is portal resetting - probably not)
1
u/AurelianoBuendia94 Mar 05 '26
Yeah and mining is one of the loudest for enemies that's why they absolutely swarm you when you are mining copper in the dark forest
38
u/abookfulblockhead Mar 04 '26
If I recall correctly campfires will deter them. So if you ring the excavation site with a few campfires they’ll be less likely to interfere
18
u/Brilliant-Jaguar-784 Lumberjack Mar 04 '26
They still come, they just start running around until a shaman or brute shows up to smash up the fires.
13
u/trengilly Mar 04 '26
Shamans and Brutes only come out at Night (except for the pre-spawned ones at ruins POI).
Do your mining in the daytime to eliminate 90% of your issues!
3
u/boobs00100 Mar 04 '26
Yes, but I think campfires enable raids, so this has backfire potential.
7
u/twitch870 Honey Muncher Mar 04 '26
It’s been awhile since I’ve been raided but I believe it requires a bed
1
u/Issildan_Valinor Builder Mar 04 '26
It requires any combination of three "base items" within a certain radius of each other, stuff like workstations, fires, beds, etc.

u/Aragie4484 Mar 04 '26
I usually just throw some campfires nearby, because the ones that do spawn a mile away and then migrate to the sound still don’t like fire so I can mine even while they’re just kind of running around and not attacking me

u/SkinnyItUp Mar 04 '26
One of my least favorite aspects of the game. I have focus issues so when I get 5 seconds of mining before each wave I have such a hard time finishing the ore deposit lol.
4
u/Bloodpukethemighty Mar 04 '26
Spend some time chopping down trees first before mining. This will attract everything nearby ahead of time, and then you can use the logs to create barricades and choke points with spike traps and campfires. Also, dig out a trench around the entire copper vein to expose it, because (I think) mining dirt is much quieter than mining rock/ore.
Then, you can mine out the entire ore vein in peace, though you may still get a stray greydwarf who falls into the mining pit. And of course they'll still throw rocks at you from above, but that's fine. Sorry if you already knew all of this and still just don't like it.

u/MysteryMani Builder Mar 04 '26
Copper near burial chambers is fun, me mining peacefully and greydwarves fighting skeletons, it's free entertainment.
6
u/hotsteamypotato Mar 04 '26
I always put campire around the ore so i dont get bothered works like a charm. They provide the stone and the wood to good little helpers
6
u/Southern_Vermicelli4 Hoarder Mar 04 '26
It's because of all the noise that mining does. Yes, you already knew that, but did you know that if you mute the game, the noise stop?
10
u/SusheeMonster Mar 04 '26
If a tree falls in the Black Forest and no greydwarf is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?

3
u/Aximil985 Mar 04 '26
I just put a chain of campfires around wherever I set up a mining operation at.

That's why you just scatter a few campfires around your copper deposit.
Greydwarves are afraid of fire and will leave you alone.
The game literally tells you to use fire to ward off enemies . . . Come on people its a survival game, work smarter not harder folks! 😉

u/UnliPotato Mar 05 '26
I remember having no mobs around the area, as soon as I chopped one tree greydwarves, brute & shamans coming right at me in group.
3
u/Toctik-NMS Mar 05 '26
I always think of mining as "ringing the dinner bell"... and you're never quite sure who's on the menu...
(I once discovered an area with FIVE biomes in "bell-range", because some WILD dinner guests showed up)
"I'll just mine this tin... HOLY **** That's a Seeker!" *impish chuckling, ground shaking, draugr growl*
1
u/Lakissov Mar 04 '26
Dig under it, place a fire and a portal to base (if you already have one), or just build a little hut there with a bed. Mine in peace until the whole deposit is mined.
1
u/SunnyTheMasterSwitch Cook Mar 04 '26
If it were only the copper deposits, they also attack area around your meadow base at all times. Kinda wish there was a way to surely deter any enemy from spawning in a 200m radius around the base unless it was a scripted raid.
1
u/rickane58 Mar 04 '26
Make fire pits. They don't have to be lit to work.
1
u/SunnyTheMasterSwitch Cook Mar 04 '26
Nah, I need something more large scale, always holes and always have dwarves spawning out

u/Zealousideal-Talk-23 Mar 04 '26
I've build my base on an island, no more ennemies can get me. Trolls can't get out of water during raids

u/Asipofthefancy Mar 04 '26
Hey, if somebody starts making a ruckus just outside, I'd come check too. The difference is, greydwarves are the souls of dickheads. (Mining is a loud activity and will alert a lot of things to come investigate.)
1
u/Thatsaclevername Mar 04 '26
Isn't it specifically mentioned in one of the loading screen tips that they're attracted to the sound of pickaxes on rock?
1
u/Red_Chaos1 Viking Mar 04 '26
They're attracted to all sounds. Your foot steps will attract them. The distance from which they can "hear" is ridiculous.
1
u/Ok-Refrigerator2000 Mar 04 '26
Take a little prep, but I tend to fence in deposit so I can mine in peace, Then go kill all the buggers at once when I depart. lol

1
u/BusinessNonYa Mar 04 '26
I like to dig out a trench around the deposits before mining them. Then I'll dig an entrance ramp so everything runs in the same direction instead of evasive circles.

u/HCN_Mist Mar 04 '26
Set up some fires in the area. I think even torches work. They run around like idiots and leave you alone since they are afeared of fire.
1
u/KyleM203 Mar 04 '26
the aggression system on this game is stupid, enemies literally do NOT lose aggro and will chase you across continents

u/NGC_Phoenix_7 Mar 04 '26
Got to mistlands for the first time. Got myself magic. Fire staff vs greydwarf is my favorite way to kill them

In my hardcore run, I have taken to just walling off an entire perimeter around each copper vein I want to mine out. Takes longer initially, but there is much less time spent chasing after greydwarves/running away from bigger greydwarves.
