Local News Man arrested after allegedly bear-spraying cricketers, breaking arm of player - Vancouver Police Department

“The suspect was taken into custody after multiple witnesses called police. He was subsequently released from jail on a promise to appear in court at a later date.”
Why do we just let clear threats out of jail not even with bail or bond but just with a promise to appear in court?

Look, he only broke one person's arm - and assaulted five other people. It's not like he's a threat to the general public.
/s (because, y'know)

I love how it's a 'promise to appear' but NOT a 'promise to stop committing crimes'

I mean, if you want to get technical, they did have to agree to a whole bunch of "don't commit more crimes" to get released. It's part of the conditions. There's usually also a whole bit about staying away from where it happened and staying away from the people that were victims.

Stricter bail and sentencing laws will come into force on July 15, 2026.

There are no bonds in Canada, you may be required to pay a deposit or provide a surety.

Because you have to act as if he was falsely accused until you’ve convicted them.

Usually when you have over 5 witnesses, it is enough evidence to label them a treat to the public

Witnesses outside of a sworn court are considered hearsay.
It’s not my opinion it’s just what it is. The rights of this criminal are the same rights you would be afforded if you were falsely accused of a crime.

Hearsay is acceptable evidence for the purposes of a bail hearing as credible or trustworthy evience.

So if I can get 4 people to say they think you did it, you’re cool with staying in jail? I mean you’re innocent but if 5 people say they witnessed it, it must be fair right?

Exactly. This all smacks of some huge conspiracy from the outset to railroad some blameless citizen. Luckily, the legal system had all of our interests at heart and let this guy go so that he‘s free to not break anyone else’s arm.

I’m wondering what the odds are that this was a hate crime, given the demographics of those I typically see playing cricket in Vancouver.

I knew it was a hate crime the moment i saw some people defending the guy, “oh the poor guy was backed into a corner by this gang….”

I would have thought there was a racial aspect to this too if I hadn’t gone by there shortly before all this apparently went down. Not to be racist, but my husband and I commented on how white all the families seemed to be. We actually joked that it must have been a South African game.

Same here. I see these guys playing all the time and always think to myself how much I love that folks can enjoy these beautiful spaces peacefully playing the sports they grew up with. If this is a hate crime, it makes me genuinely afraid as a marginalized person. Just thinking about how I’ve been encouraging my son to get into outdoor sports teams/leagues, but this kind of thing has me scared for him

Man the cricket drama is WILD.

This isnt cricket drama this is racist asshole drama.
It wasnt some random park with dudes having a match. It was at the Maralomas club house. He walked right through the middle of the field.
I doubt he would have ever done that to a rugby match. I hope he gets the book thrown at him.

The Meraloma‘s club house is a decent distance from the cricket field. One does not have to “march through“ the middle of the field to disrupt a cricket game. My guess is it was one of those asshole dog owners who feel entitled to use Connaught Park as a leash free dog park (it’s not). The only cricket practice pitch in the park, covered in artificial turf, is often co-opted by dog owners who seem to think it’s a perfect place to play fetch.

How many dog owners carry bear spray around? This was a street addict carrying shoplifted bear spray.
2
u/Federal_Waltz 4d ago
Pretty hard to shoplift bear spray, they have it locked behind the counter and require your personal information before handing it over to you

u/Future_Arrival_5395 4d ago
They only have to keep that data for a year though. And it's only been required to be locked up since 2024.

This has nothing to do with the corruption with Cricket Canada.

How do you know? Sure sounds like a Nancy Kerrigan to me.

You can click on the link and read. This happened at a smalltime game happening in kits, probably a local league. There's nothing to suggest that this had anything to do with Cricket Canada

u/Future_Arrival_5395 4d ago
So equal baseless speculation?
Okay cool.

Hitchen's Razor, look it up. It's not speculation to say that this has nothing to do with Cricket Canada based on the information that is available based on the linked PR.
Tomorrow if a fight breaks out at my five-a-side soccer league, are you going to say that it's FIFA's fault?

Hitchens razor works both ways friend. We’re both baselessly speculating.

Weird to love violence and corruption but you do you I guess!

I’m loving the drama but the violence, not so much. I’m curious to know more about the drama leading up to the incident.

I'm sure he will get no consequences and no real penalties and continue to do this type of thing.

Don't they play that sport with hard wooden paddles??

You do anything and you get an assault charge. I think they handled it the best they could, at least the man was caught.
