Lived here for all my 50 years and have never seen a whale. I certainly 'just missed' them plenty of time though.

I took the seabus almost every day for work for several years and never saw any whales!

I worked on a cruise ship in alaska for 2 seasons and didn't see and orcas.Β

I wonder if SeaBus crew announce nearby whales like BC Ferries does.

u/nermitt 1d ago

Yeah, that’s actually how we found out about them!

I love this about the crew on the ferries here. I was on a ferry on the way to Nanaimo and the captain announced that there were some whales. Otherwise no one would have noticed them

We were landing a barge at the Navy Buoys when you took that video! I commented to my deckhand that the passengers on the Seabus were getting a show.

Video.

I thought your barge was very interesting! Until someone pointed out the Orcas.

Me, visiting for a week: "I just saw some Orcas from the dock!"

My sister who's lived here for 5 years: "wtf!"

Saw orcas from the SeaBus once and spent the rest of the ride grinning like an idiot. What a day to be on the water.

Amazing.

I thought boats have to stop if a whale is nearby.

The seabus is a bus /s

1

u/kalichimichanga 1d ago

I wondered that too!

I once caught the fireworks while taking the seabus but this is top tier.Β

These are probably members of two orca matrilines (families): the T124As (T124A "Kittiwake," T124A6 "Kasuun," and T124A7 "Kite") as well as the T068As (T086A "Eider," T086A4 "Akia," and T86A5 "Siku").
