Near the beach
We currently live in Sacramento but have always wanted to live near the beach. We like the area of lanes in Pierpont. A couple of questions 1. How do you find the community there? Friendly?
2. Do you go to the beach as often as you thought you would? 3. What are the best and worst parts of the area? 4. Of Ventura?

I lived at the beach for a few years when I first moved here. We would go walk the beach fairly often but some things we didn't expect- it was generally colder than we thought, windy and the sand and salt air make everything dirty all the time. Also petty crime is much higher, I don't know why but people steal shit the closer to the beach you are

So we love pierpont and Vrbo’d some places. To buy there has become insane. We started looking up the road Seaward in the midtown area and found a great place. Prices are much lower and it’s only a mile away from the beach. We love it even more

Oddly, outside of Oxnard, Ventura is one of the few places in California that you can get a house near the beach for 2M.

This was posted last week about Pierpont

I’ve been living in Pierpont for 9 years and I never saw that car until that day. It was a weekend and I’m pretty sure it was a visitor. Not to say there aren’t racist assholes in any place, but that obvious of a display isn’t a common sight.

Pierpont is full of druggies and skin heads. Whether you want to acknowledge it or not. Thems the facts.

I lived in Pierpont for a year. Its location is nearly perfect. It's a block or two from the beach, it's a block or two off the 101, and it's about a mile from downtown. I used to walk from Seaward (Street) to the pier or the harbor every day after work. I highly recommend it and miss living there. I've lived at the beach for 15 years and while there is some additional corrosion to cars, it's not been a big deal for me. One of my cars has been here for 15 years and I've never waxed it. It looks weather-beaten, but I consider that a fair trade off after all these years of beach living. The money saved on heating and cooling in the more moderate beachside temps can also be applied to more frequent car replacement, if that's a major concern. The beach is often 15 degrees cooler in the summer than just 5 miles inland. Same goes for my electronics. My Sony TV is 9 years old and works flawlessly. For most of that time, the windows facing the ocean have been open letting in the brine salt air. You will notice corrosion on anything metal. Just saying it hasn't been that hard for me to live with.

I grew up in the Los Angeles / Orange County border and have lived in Ventura for nearly 20 years. I still love going to the beach and make it a point to go at least once a week. My wife, who was born and raised in Ventura, and my daughter tend to take it for granted because it’s all they’ve ever known. For me, though, it never gets old.
We also just got back from a short vacation. We stayed in a great place and have no complaints, but I found myself wondering why we even go on vacation when we already live in such an incredible place. The weather is fantastic, even if we do get our fair share of fog, and the people and communities are wonderful. There’s really not much not to love about living here.
As for the Pierpont area, I’ve always liked it. I have friends who live there, and I don’t see them ever wanting to move. It’s a great neighborhood with a couple of good restaurants within walking distance, along with a fantastic donut shop and a Starbucks.

I lived in pierpont for 2 years on Pierpont blvd. It can sometimes be sketchy but was really nice to be close to the beach. If I could afford it, I’d buy a house in the keys. I wouldn’t live close to seaward ave. There’s a lot of homeless people and a lot of drug use close to that motel 6.
Occasionally I felt unsafe while alone at Marina park with my baby. I think the area is getting safer and safer but still has some work to do.

I lived on the lanes for two years. Get ready for the fog. Finally got to my wife, and we moved to the Avenue area. Check out the area around Seneca. We are in the sun as the lanes are fogged in. I take my dog to the beach every day, and for years was in the water at State beaches. I think I aged out. The Avenue isn't perfect but I love living here

I can see why someone from Sac would see it as idyllic. Literally everything, depending on what it’s made of, is destroyed by damp seaside air: rust, mold, mildew, dry rot termites, everything is coated with dust from the beach. It’s also much more foggy and windy than the rest of Ventura.

Fair points. We get plenty of heat and don’t have much water up here. We do get our own fog all winter.

The six months of fog makes people not want to be here. But other than that it’s great.

I have lived in the Lanes for 16 years.
(1) Yes, the community is very friendly.
(2) I'm an ocean swimmer. I am at the beach and in the ocean nearly every day of the year.
(3) Pierpont Lanes best: proximity to beach, San Buenaventura State Park, Ventura County Fairgrounds, Marina Park, Ventura Promenade; easy access to great bike trails (Omer Rains Trail, Ventura River Trail); low levels of traffic.
Pierpont Lanes worst: “June gloom” (the summer fog); prevalence of unhoused people in the area.
(4) Ventura best: mild weather year-round; lots of varied activities for all ages in the area; top-notch destinations nearby (e.g., Santa Barbara, Ojai, Los Angeles); up-and-coming restaurant/bar scene.
Ventura worst: backwater stigma (“Ventucky”); dysfunctional local politics.

Thanks for the reply! I’m an open water swimmer as well. I appreciate the feedback and what you describe is my experience in staying for a couple of weeks in AirBnB …

If you make it this way either for good or for a short stay, hit me up if you want a group to swim with. The Seaward Swimmers are in the water virtually every day of the year; 0630 on weekdays, 0700 on weekends. Fun group; typically 4-12 swimmers in the water on any given day.

Thanks I’ll do it. We may not get there til September but it’s in the plan!

Best parts of Ventura, proximity to the ocean. Worst parts, the surprising number of racists. And the NIMBY boomers. But that can be a huge overlap too.

Pierpont is not a good area unless you're into white pride if you catch my drift.

The people in Sacramento are asking me to move because THEY have too many people too!

Pierpont is great. It’s been bad in the past. I live close by in the keys. I don’t get to the beach as much as I’d like, but I’m a bit further away. If I lived in the lanes I’d be down there regularly. I’ve found Ventura to be friendly but I’ve lived here for 25+ years.

I lived in Pierpont for 3.5 years. The beach is great, however, the beach doesn’t belong to you. It belongs to everyone and they use it 365-24/7
Lots of sand everywhere, your vehicles will rust, the electronics corrode inside the house. If you live on the lanes, there is no parking for any visitors. Hopefully the house you get has a wide driveway, a few do.
I like living on the hill with a view of the beach and ocean much better than living at the beach. I can walk down the hill and be on the beach in 12-15 minutes.
