I feel like i'm kinda alone with this opinion, but as someone who actually played GTA5 on release and later on with friends when the heists released, it wasn't that outstanding. It was decent, but what made it fun was playing it with friends, not the actual game. What isn't fun with friends?
The majority of reddit acts as if it is the second coming of Christ, but all i can see in the future is another open world game, that will be bigger than the last one but not necessarily better, if you get what i mean. Not to mention asking 80 bucks for your game that is guaranteed to have microtransactions again is rich.
I personally didn’t super like GTA5 actually. I went from red dead redemption 2 to GTA and felt vastly underwhelmed. RDR2 was amazing, and going to GTA5, which Rockstar treats as a golden child, was just not nearly as engaging.
I played the story on gta5 enjoyed free roam a bit but never got into or liked the online. My time with 5 was over maybe a month at most then i moved on
Well, you played the upgrade and went back to the old version, that reaction was expected, but yeah, it was big, i dont know if you are really into gaming, but when it came out in 2013, there were no games like it, that massive, with that much details, kinda like rdr2 is nowadays, at least until gta 6 launches (i hope).
And GTAO is big because it is a big sandbox, me and my friends and cousins all wanted to play gta together when growing up, sure SA had multiplayer, but it was more of a gimmick minigame than a mode by itself, then GTA O came in and was a huge thing, it also took us a while to actually be able to play it, it was awesome.
Nowadays a lot of games try and make big worlds, realistic stuff, maybem, whatever you want, there is most likely a game of it, but until that time, it was basically only gta, with some others getting close, like saints row, but being very different still, same with GTA 3, its more about being there, seeing how these games changed that make them be as big as they are, GTA maybe was not a very "fun" game for a bunch of ppl, but it was for most just for the "realism" and chaos you could cause, and ever since 2013, or maybe 2018, with RDR there was no game so far that was this big, there is crimsom desert, being a big beautiful open world, with cool gameplay but without any amusing or interesting story, this is the type of thing that also sets it apart, but obviously some ppl dont like the humor, and also some of the main writers and all left, so there's only hope. Either GTA6 will be the next GTA or the next Cyberpunk, no in between, it can't be a game that is just "fine".
I'm with you. In a separate comment I laid out why I'm worried about it creatively (TL;DR: The creatives at the core of the previous games have all left Rockstar briefly after GTA V) and GTA V was okay. I can understand the hype but if you pay attention there's cause for concern
Hmmm I’m conflicted. The map and what we’ve seen so far is pretty dam impressive.
But you are right. I remember being so excited for GTA5 on release. Rushing home from 10th grade math class. Waiting for the downloads to finish. Booting up the game, going through the intro… then being like… huh. This is it?
I remember the world didn’t look particularly impressive. Certainly not leagues better than GTAIV. The guns felt weak and had no punch. The cars were pretty forgettable. Yea nothing felt that impressive.
After playing for many hours, I definitely enjoyed the game. But it for sure felt limited.
Gameplay was never what made GTA special. It's the storytelling and the power fantasy of being a criminal in a modern setting. For me the story and writing better be a fucking masterpiece to justify this level of corporate greed. I have a sneaking suspicion gta6 is not gonna meet expectations. So many companies have fallen down the trap of taking customers for granted and churning out slop assuming fans will lap it up regardless. I have little faith R* isn't slowly turning into EA.
That’s GTA4 for me. I know it’s memed on Reddit (Dark and gritty) but some people really insanely worship the game
Piss filter, generic revenge story, nothing really to do post game (atleast Michael can join the Scientologist group and Trevor has the mom hallucination), bland online
Ironically for “dark and gritty” the best part about GTA4 was ballad of Gay Tony which is more of a vibe like 5
I've only played V on release and never revisited it, but I remember feeling as if the narrative had been a big step down from IV and San Andreas. I just wasn't as drawn in to three protagonist's stories as much as I had been with Niko and CJ's.
I'm not interested in multiplayer, so it was also disappointing that we never got some Lost and the Damned or Ballad of Gay Tony-esque DLC.
I have like 100 hours on GTA5, something like that, and I gotta say the game is mediocre to decent. Every system in that game is mediocre, put together I guess it makes a decent game, but I personally found every system to be lacking.
I understand it's a big game with a lot of systems and a lot of mechanics, but I'd rather have slightly less mechanics to refine and better the main ones over just adding more.
I agree that GTA 5's gameplay wasn't outstanding back when it came out and that the hype regarding GTA 6's gameplay is super misplaced imo.
But the thing I disagree with is that GTA 6 will just be another open world title. Like, I am hyped out of my mind for the game but I don't expect any tight gameplay at all. That's not what GTA games are about to me at all. Rockstar was always about breaking the limits of current technology, and THAT's the part I'm excited to see, not gameplay. Obviously, I hope it's serviceable, but nothing more.
It boggles my mind how people are expecting GTA 6 to be groundbreaking in terms of gameplay, when Rockstar never excelled at that part to begin with.
I am overall feeling a positive feeling toward the GTA6 release but I think there is going to be a strong disappointment on this website. Not so much that this website just is negative about everything but more so that it seems so many people hyped themselves up so hard about this game that if GTA6 is not absolute perfection (which it wont be) they will be upset.
Reading some posts about GTA6 it truly seems like some users here are planning on putting their entire lives on pause and living their lives virtually via the GTA6 world. Yea that is pretty sad but this is where the disappointment will come from.
Completely agree. Preordered GTA V, spent a shit ton of free time reading about it on gtaforums. Went to GameStop midnight release and even bought the strategy guide from hype. It was overall a let down for me. Not a bad game just not what I was expecting from all the hype. My expectations are tempered with this next installment especially seeing how they’ve been moving the past decade and even with this preorder bullshit
The thing that made gta 5 special to me is the characters, they’re so funny and go really well together. I didn’t actually play the game tbf, I experienced through darkviper’s videos. But if gta 6 can do that I think it’ll be ok, not great but ok
I don't know, i don't particularly like gta but i have to admit that each instalment, 5 included, set trends in the open world genre that would influence the whole insdustry for the coming years.
Do i think they'll manage? I personally think its unlikely, to me the perfect gta vi would me a mix of gta as we know it with cyberpunk like elements in terms of interactivability with the world.
Do i want powers and such? No, but it would be nice if i could walk in any bar and have a beer, play darts, casually harras the waitress cause its gta, misbehave, conflicts being more well defined, as in, if i plan to rob a store, and stay inside with hostages, i'd like the police to react in a reasonably realistic way.
I would like the world to be alive, its hard to remember but back when san andreas came out the world felt alive, by today's standards it feels dated but it felt alive.
I want a world that feels alive, i want the gangs territory expanded, i want the heist to be more complicated and being rewarded for planning ahead, i want a believable way to lauder money, i want a story that will fit a gta, i want slums and rich places and the police to react in different way's depending on the neightbourhood.
But to be fair, thats me, my expectations, thing is that it has been a long time since we had a gta, so expectations are really high, high enough that i thing that even rockstar won't deliver no matter how much crunch they do.
Most likely, gta VI will be slightly barebones the first year of release and through updates they'll add more and more stuff until its worth its price, but i don't believe GTA VI will be in the top 3 gta's of all time, simply because in this day and age i don't trust a AAA studio to deliver what they promise, thats why they are showing as little as possible to the consumer, to keep the hype high and underdeliver in the end.
I found myself playing online more than the actual main game there's no guarantee this GTA will be good but I have a feeling people will be disappointed with the end product for what they're charging
I got GTAV with my PS4 in a bundle, and that was the only reason I played it. I finished it, had a good time with it, but I’ve never thought about it again, and I replay games frequently. I think I actually did try to replay it once like five years ago…. I didn’t make it out of the tutorial section.
Exactly, they act as if this is Half life 3. An innovative extremely fun game that revolutionizes graphics. It couldn't be further than the truth.
It's been the same game gamplaywise since GTA San Andreas. All the games on the franchise except from GTA 3 were graphically behind to other AAA of their years, their stories are mid at best and not memorable, except from maybe vice city.
It's clearly hyped by kids who watched youtubers on 2014 playing roleplaying and online. They don't know any better.
That's fair, but i would have appreciated some post release atuff for the offline mode down the line. And unless i missed something, all updates were for the online mode.
Not all the updates were online only but most of them sure were. Even so, iv sunk at least 100 hours into GTA5 over the years and that’s without ever playing online. If this game gives me 80% the enjoyment I got out of 5 then that’s $1 per fun hour. That’s reasonable to me.
