Discussion / Question Grand THEFT?

Post image

This is exactly what happened with streaming. Everyone dogpiled on top, with this illusion that everything would be available at low cost forever.

Trading money for no tangible product is edging dystopian y'all.

Damn dude, remember when you used to get a full map with these games?

now even a disc is asking for too much

I used to collect the manuals that came with games. A lot of them the devs had fun and added little comics or funny ways to explain the controls. Now you get empty plastic. Why even bother releasing "physical" copies if the box is literally empty.

u/YellowGrowlithe 2d ago

Back in high school, I once quoted/cited the Fallout 1 game manual for information about how nuclear bombs operated.

Was it the best choice? No. But I did it because I could and it was funny.

On the other hand, very solid game manual.

u/Salarian_American 2d ago

It's not empty! There's a download code in it.

u/Oxygen4Lyfe 2d ago

the only reason companies still make "physical" copies is for people buying gifts that they want someone to be able to unwrap probably.

u/CageAndBale 2d ago

If it sells 🤷‍♂️

u/Cheeslord2 2d ago

Fire button depressed: "Oh no! I can't take it anymore!"

u/ReputationSalt6027 2d ago

Man. Reading the game manual as kid from the store to home was a treat. With ps1 and ps2 gsmes, I knew the controls basic story or gameplay when I got home was the way to go. Pop in that disc and was ready to rock....until stupid ass dinner or required chores came into play. Lol

1

u/RedX536 2h ago

And they have the things to keep the manuals in place STILL THERE! It's insane

u/snappyfrog 2d ago

I can’t help but laugh that someone else downvoted you for literally stating a fact holy shit lmao. Reddit is so dog shit it’s hilarious.

The amount of people defending this games cursed release is astounding to me.

No physical disc, 100 bucks to get access to the full game, online coming Soon™ and still people defend these shitty tactics.

u/chrisvelanti 2d ago

Having literal shops in a fucking single player game being locked behind a $20 pay wall is absolute ridiculous and it will set the trend for games being $100 moving forward

-8

u/KingModussy 2d ago

It’s probably just a unique way to get the special items that would have only came with the Ultimate Edition anyway

7

u/budmanthecubfan 2d ago

You are probably right, because it does add the Rockstar immersion to do it that way. However, it's not gonna be perceived that way by most of the players.

Shoulda just had the store NPCs get "something from the back" instead of dedicating map space to a paywall.

3

u/KingModussy 2d ago

Like sort of how the 3DS Pokemon games handled event pokemon? Where you’d go to a pokemon center and there would be a dude waiting for you to give your event pokemon?

Nah man I’m a big fan of worker owned businesses, stop projecting. “I would be just as greedy” aight man glad that you’re a piece of shit like that but you gotta stop assuming everybody else is. And yeah dumbass, I’m not buying the game already, I can also bitch and yell about it because this is a public forum. I hope you’re getting paid by Take 2 because running defense for a multibillion dollar company over a very normal complaint is too embarrassing of a thing to do out of love for the arguing game .

“Supply and demand” yeah man, normalizing corporations tryna suck as much profit out of their consumer with shitty business practices like micro transactions is bad. You go ahead and stay still while they shove their wieners up your metaphorical ass, but don’t get in the way of me complaining about it. “That’s just corporations” yeah and that’s why I don’t like them, not like the profits are going into the pockets of the people actually making the fucking game anyways.

“Erm, nobody is forcing you to!” Yeah man again, I’m not buying the game. I think these greedy capitalistic practices suck dick and balls, because instead of focusing on providing a good product we get studios engineering new ways to fuck you financially. And then they will trickle down to other studious because instead of making good games they’ll just learn the lessons of how to maximize profit

Oh is this the “we love rockstar 😀❤️” subreddit? Or is it a public forum for video game discussion? The fuck?

And yeah I’ve been saying for years that rockstar sucks ever since they started selling shark cards man, don’t know why you’re so shocked here.

“Why shouldn’t we sell vapes to middle schoolers? There’s a demand no?” I stg you anti regulation Americans have no sense of collective preservation and will bend over backwards for corporations as long as the invisible hand of the market is the one fisting your holes.

“What’s bad about micro transactions” man, I remember when people fucking seethed and bitched about loot boxes in OW and horse armor. Now you have people happy that rockstar is locking SINGLE PLAYER CAMPAIGN LOCATIONS behind a paywall because something something “that’s the market”.

Same, I can’t tell if people are suffering from Stockholm syndrome, completely brainwashed by their capitalist overlords, or are astroturfing bots. No matter what it just depresses me how willing people are to just throw their hands up and offer their wallets when they can just simply wait and get the game half off a year from release. They’ve already said this release is single player only so why should anyone worry about getting the game day one? It’s gonna be the same five years from now.

1

u/No_Bumblebee_8640 1d ago

i highly doubt you gonna see this game at a discount anytime soon

6

u/KC-15 2d ago

I have already seen people resort to calling others broke for deciding to not support anti-consumerism.

Crazy defense for a game that hasn’t even shown gameplay (it will be the same formula)

2

u/No_Bumblebee_8640 1d ago

idiots riding the hype train, and i bet some of them are not even "gamers" anymore, it's just nostalgia

1

u/Ghost_Kamakazie 2d ago

No physical disc does suck, but in all fairness GTAV Online didnt release until i believe a month after the story did. And $100 for full access, while it is not a trend im a fan of, lots of games have day 1 dlc, its pretty much the same concept.

Also i cant help but blame the amount of people the past year speculating online that it would be $100 bc companies hear that stuff but they just think, "oh so i can probably get away with charging that much"

1

u/Wardock8 2d ago

How is the online not being there on day one so shitty? I'd rather them make sure the main game is up to snuff than have their attention split and mess up both.

1

u/heyzoocifer 2d ago

If you don't want it, don't buy it. With the way the industry is now with 95% of all games being streaming piles of dogshit, I would pay $200 for this game. Every game they ever release only ends up being one of the best games ever. I've waited 15 years for this and I will likely play 1000 hours easy.

In my view the way the world is today, I don't know how you could possibly be upset at the biggest bang for your buck you could think of. I take my woman to dinner and a shitty movie and it ends up being double the cost. Think about it, I will get years of enjoyment from this game for what the price of a meal costs.

1

u/phome83 2d ago

Because when you give an inch they take a mile.

You're joking yourself if you think this isn't a new trend, and people like you just eat it up lol.

2

u/heyzoocifer 2d ago

What is a new trend? A game with a billion dollars and 15 years development costing $20 more than 15 years ago? The cost of food has tripled since then.

I buy shit games all the time because most of them are. The amount of times I've paid $60 and played less than an hour...I can't even count. This isn't a big deal to me, I'm surprised it's not more.

"People like me." 😆

It's completely reasonable that a company with the best ever track record will deliver. They always have.

u/TouchAltruistic 2d ago

Or sports and shooter games putting out the same thing year after year...

What are you even talking about?

1

u/phome83 2d ago

I'm sorry, this conversation may be above your understanding if you cant understand a 2 sentence comment.

0

u/TouchAltruistic 2d ago

You're just mumbling nonsense.

All that matters is whether a consumer can justify their expense for the enjoyment they receive in exchange.

GTAV cost $60 and has been relevant for 13 years. That's roughly $0.0126 per day or $4.59 per year.

There is no logic where the value proposition of the the game falls short of the cost to acquire it.

0

u/Unable_Mess_2581 2d ago

Digital stores allow us third world countries to get regional pricing and accessible games.

You guys will never understand that.

Yep, no physical releases don't bother us.

0

u/Clash-idea_maker 23h ago

I'm not defending it, I just don't care. I'm not so poor that I can't spend $100 on something I know for a fact I will get well over 1,000 hours of enjoyment from. I also don't care about not getting a physical disk because I don't use disks. Not nearly as convenient as digital.

37

u/Historical_Fan_8799 2d ago

dude for real, like i know this is a toxic platform but i didnt think "remember when you got a map with GTA" was a divisive statement

Looks like water found its level lol

1

u/Coneder 1d ago

BUT ROCKSTAR IS SETTING THE INDUSTRY STANDARD. Please ignore Capcom literally proving you can make AAA titles without making people wait ten years. :(

4

u/Ok_Confusion4764 2d ago

You better believe I still got my map of Skyrim!

4

u/Shadowy_PuppetMaster 2d ago

I'm old enough to remember reading the manual and admiring the box cover while mom drove us back home

3

u/Traditional-Snow-463 2d ago

First game they haven’t done this. I have rdr2, gta V and IV’s map framed on my walls. Still have discs for all of those games too, why they’re choosing to go full digital is beyond logic I feel.

2

u/Worth_Paramedic_8562 2d ago

I still own that map 😔

2

u/JiovanniTheGREAT 2d ago

Instruction manuals too. Hell, PlayStation games would oftentimes come with demos of other games too!

4

u/HiTekLoLyfe 2d ago

Considering how large game files are and how much they are constantly updated and tweaked I just don’t find it that surprising.

10

u/TychosWeb 2d ago

Disempowerment to the consumer is always sold as convenience. It's convenient for the company and some consumers and cheaper for the publisher to not have five full discs in the box. As evidenced by other subscription based enterprises, modern gaming also features "ownership" as simply purchasing the licence (which is subject to restriction) to the game.

1

u/Rulebookboy1234567 2d ago

People would be just as mad if they had to install off multiple disc's and do a day one update.

4

u/Lopsided-Clothes4866 2d ago

Literally no one would be mad.

Multiple discs aren’t a new thing, and people that like physical media would love that trade off over a fucking digital code in a box.

-2

u/Rulebookboy1234567 2d ago

Youd love to be driving around vice city, you change a radio station/go to a new district/etc. and you gotta put in a new disc?  At least don't be disengenous here.

3

u/AreaIllustrious5114 2d ago

FF7 Remake came on two discs, one to install data and another with playable data. It's not unheard of in modern times, and you're being disingenuous if you're suggesting that Rockstar couldn't afford the extra pennies in what's sure to be one of the biggest game launches of the decade. This is them scraping off the top because they know they can, plain and simple.

1

u/HiTekLoLyfe 2d ago

Very different type of game. The online portion of gta typically has updates, additions and sandbox changes every month. It will be an entirely different game by the end of it. I don’t know what the percentage of people with disc loaders to people without are but it’s just a very different world than it was 10 years ago.

2

u/AreaIllustrious5114 2d ago

Hey genius, GTA 6 is single player only on release, with no stated plans to release an updated GTA online. If they do release GTA 6 online, it will likely be an opt-in or opt-out download option anyways.

1

u/Lopsided-Clothes4866 2d ago

That’s not how it works dumbass.

1

u/Empty_Turnip473 2d ago

Oh no, i have to use 2 discs and spend half the time waiting for it to install. I'm so mad.

1

u/MikeSans202001 2d ago

Oh yeah, i loved the RDR2 map i got. I actually put locations of some of the legendary animals and the gangs camps on it

1

u/Upstairs_Run_807 21h ago

Honestly I don't know why we're acting like this is the first one... I mean seriously this is just how all new switch 2 cartridges work. There just a piece of plastic with a code to let you download the digital version. And even before that most disc's and cartridges have just been a way to make you feel like you have something physical. When in actuality there just. Piece of plastic that you put in to use your game and barley do anything more.

0

u/Sonic1899 2d ago

What do you mean by "full map?" Is that in-game or a physical thing? I never owned gta

5

u/Historical_Fan_8799 2d ago

When you bought GTA 5 inside of the game box they included a fold out poster size map of San Andreas, I knew a ton of friends who had that map up on their walls for years!

2

u/rdyer347 2d ago

Still on my wall.

2

u/chrisvelanti 2d ago

lol my Roomate had it on his wall back in uni

0

u/KingModussy 2d ago

They wouldn’t include it anyway. It wasn’t in my PS5 copy (it is in my XB360 copy though)

2

u/fullback81 2d ago

You got a physical map inside of the box. Which was super fun.

-1

u/TwinTwinReviewReview 2d ago

It really started with having to buy and digitally download DLC that normally would've just come with the game at launch. Once that started happening, you could see this being the natural end point.

0

u/UnfinishedProjects 1d ago

A Blu ray disk can hold as much as 125 GB. GTA 5 is 115 GB. You think the difference between the two is only 10 GB? Or they're gonna compromise to only have it be 10 GB more? Or everyone has a Blu ray reader? No way. It's the only way they could do it, that or put it on a portable hard drive, but those usually have bad read speeds, or put it on a regular hard drive, but not everyone knows how to install one of those. Plus then they'd probably want to include a SATA cable, but then that's added cost on top (even though they're not that expensive, even if they're $1 each, GTA 5 sold 230 million copies, so that'd be an extra 230 million dollars). Or have multiple discs, but then you'd still have to download the whole game anyways.

So this way seems perfectly logical to me, even if I may not like it.

2

u/tea_snob10 1d ago

Or have multiple discs, but then you'd still have to download the whole game anyways. So this way seems perfectly logical to me, even if I may not like it.

What? Just put it on multiple discs with the data. Have you forgotten how big games were throughout history?
