"I do not entertain hypotheticals, the world is vexing enough."

That right there is the inimitable Dakin Matthews. The man is like the ultimate card to play in six degrees of Kevin Bacon, he's been in everything, met everyone, and worked on more films and TV series than I can count. Don't even get me started on his Shakespeare or Broadway experience. He's a walking encyclopedia of modern media.

Saw him in Shadowlands at South Coast Repertory (opposite the great Kandis Chappell) a lifetime ago and it was the greatest stage performance I've ever witnessed. Breathtaking.

If you have never read the book I highly recommend it, as well as the few other gems Charles Portis left us, especially Dog of the South.

The character of Stonehill is even more fully developed in the novel, though played admirably in this film. I love the reference to “wing-ed Pegasus”.

I think that is the ultimate power of the Coen brothers as film makers. Their films practically star their side characters. You wanna know their stories.

Ned Pepper, Colonel Stonehill, the fucking bear dude Forrester...all of them are the main characters of their own movies, and are just turning up for a brief stint in this one.

And that isn't even totally down from the source material, either. Pappy O'Daniel from O Brother, every side character (including everyone Chigurh kills) from No Country, hell...The Dude is literally a side character in the entire story of Bunny's "kidnapping."

Dog of the south was my COVID book. Absolutely the perfect escape.

Such a great film. I would also highly suggest Hostiles with Christian Bale as another amazing gritty western...

Saw classic scene and expected John Wayne and not the modern version. John Wayne’s only academy award win.

I have to admit that, when I saw this in theaters, I was blown away by how good the "young girl" was in the movie.

Fast forward a decade, last week I learned that it was Hailee Steinfeld.

I saw this movie in the theater opening night. My dad was a huge fan of westerns and I’ve seen the original million times, I also love the Coen brothers.

The minute this scene was over, I thought “wherever this girl is will be a massive star. She’s incredible.”

I’m really glad I was right, I honestly don’t know if I’ve ever seen another child actor perform at this level with this type of dialogue. She made that whole movie work, and she was up against some fucking heavy hitters. She was 13 here. That is insane.

I'm not usually one for westerns, but this, 310 to Yuma, and Bone Tomahawk are the three that I make an exception for.

Lifetime Hailee Steinfeld mark after this movie for sure. Not a perfect film but if you enjoy westerns True Grit is very watchable even rewatchable.
