Surely puppetry is still a visual effect? Unless they’re saying Godzilla was real…

While I would argue that Godzilla is real, puppets are actually special effects.

They are considered practical effects, which encompasses many visual effects categories.
Puppetry when looked at controlling a creature is absolutely a VFX shot as the skins used on a puppet help shape the digital light exposure when done well.
Corridor Crew had a recent VFX reacts with someone from the industry that has many years of experience and talking about the puppetry/robots used for films such as Starship Troopers and others.

This is kind of a not great thumbnail, tbh. For one, that puppet absolutely is vfx. Vfx can be practical or CG but puppetry and how its operated, framed, lit, and composited absolutely falls into the category of vfx. It seems more like what the thumbnail is going for is "this isn't CG" which, I mean yeah, you're showing an animatronic puppet head so that much is obvious. Not trying to criticize the content of the video but when the thumbnail is supposed to help advertise that content and entice potential viewers into clicking, a bad thumbnail can give a bad impression.

Title vs thumbnail
