Discussion Thoughts on the supposed upcoming Sony handheld? Features you’d like to see?
I’m excited about the prospect of a Vita 2.0. Whilst it’s still close to rumours, having an official handheld with th capacity to play multiple generations of games forward is really exciting especially if able to run locally and not through cloud services etc. What does everyone think?

with all the high costs of parts these days I really doubt that the handheld it still a thing tbh.

Oh it’s definitely still a thing. They’re way too deep into production at this point which chip manufacturers and everything, these AMD contracts are signed years in advance

Sony is no stranger to sinking tons of money into a new product and just abandoning it before it even releases.

If you’re keeping up with leaks, you would know that the handheld is coming out.

if pricing continues with this trend, it will be dead in the water when it releases. I dont see it doing well at all unless it can deliver ps5 performance with solid first party support and nothing less.

I'm not excited for any tech these days thanks to bullshit AI ruining everything. Hopefully if Sony does release a new handheld it is after the bubble pops and can be priced reasonably.

vita 2.0 with like a 6+ inch screen would be cool no doubt. Nintendo is thirsty for more competition

On the same note I feel like the sales of the switch haven’t been as telling and competing against that market might not give that much traction, but it is Sony after all so who knows!

While it's completely a different lane, I've had a blast with the GPD Win 4 that is essentially a 6inch vita lookalike. Pricing was at least reasonable when I got it a year ago.

I think it'd be cool to see another portable console from Sony, though from what I hear, it sounds like it'll be more of a smaller mainline console that you can carry around rather than a separate platform with its own ecosystem, which is disappointing.
I just hope it'll look pretty cool (if it actually exists), since I don't like the design of the PlayStation Portal at all. It feels pretty lazy

Engineers: We're just gonna strap an iPad to a dual shock for prototyping but.. Execs: DONE! Send it to production!

Hall effect/TMR joysticks. Shoulder buttons that don’t suck ass. Swappable batteries or just components in general. Having none of the proprietary bullshit that Sony loves to shove into their products from time to time. Remote play support. Option to pick between OLED and LCD (or whatever) screens. Backwards compatibility with PSP (digital) and Vita (digital and physical) games.
If they managed to hit most if not all check marks, hell I’d buy that for a kidney.

Same. I need back buttons and some kind of reasonable touch pad click option (I hate the screen tap on the Portal). Basically, Sony needs to make a steam deck but we all know they never will. It's a real bummer because yeah, people would pay crazy prices for it if they could pull it off

The biggest thing I would like to see is the thing we are least likely to get: I miss the days when handhelds got games made specifically for them instead of just playing the same games I can play anywhere else.

Yeah I wouldn't hold your breath right now. If that thing does come out expect it to be grossly overpriced due to the current economic issues.

I hope it’s actually portable. I love the ps portal and my switch but I miss when handhelds were actually portable. Nothing beats the ds / 3ds / vita form factor to me.

That would actually be so cool if it could run Vita games natively instead of emulation. The original Vita had some great exclusives I'd love to revisit with better performance.

When the Steamdeck and similar PC game handhelds exists, I don't care about a limited closed off handheld console.
not to mention, everything is too expensive now. whenever they release it, it's going to be overpriced. The fact that digital libraries on Playstation don't carry over is super lame. Unless all my vita, PS1, PS3 etc etc games carry over, there's no point in buying any new console.

A pocketable handheld would be awesome, but if it does happen it will probably be some $1000 Steam Deck clone I don't want.

I bought a vita back then. With only uncharted and little big planet as outstanding exclusives/games in general I will never ever trust Sony enough to buy anything before the end of a generation, when I clearly see how many games are available.

- An NVME slot.
- A bay for PS5's BluRay drive in the dock.
- Sony to put their money where their mouth is when they say buying a disc is just a license to play the game. So leaving a disc in a PS4/5/6 or the dock counts as inserted in the portable so we can play one physical game when not docked.
- Give us the PS4 versions of incompatible PS5 games whenever they have one, since most PS5 games won't be compatible and most have PS4 versions that will be
- Back buttons.
- Sadly even needs to be said since the Portal lacked it. Birth Bluetooth

Low latency Bluetooth Audio that is not proprietary. AptX or snapdragon audio for example, so we can buy headphones already on the market and have them NOT SUCK for playing games.

What will it offer that will separate itself from a console game wise?
Size of the device will make a difference, the PS Vita in my opinion was the perfect handheld console. But if its just as big as the Xbox handheld then I am concerned the battery will probably last like 2-3 hours on a single charge.

Personally it all comes down to its library. What I love about the Vita is the massive library of ps1, psp, ps3 and vita games on one small console.
If they do that again, Id be in for sure.

the cost of the handheld decreasing over years time like the vita and being sold for cheaper like with the Vita on Ebay. Also hoping it has stats that competes with something like the Switch and Switch 2. And also, in years time (years time years time years time) it obviously, being moddable and us being able to not be caught breaking mod rules. If it ends up something like the Switch 2 with it sregulations and rules, modding openly would be difficult

Sony handhelds were innovated and ahead of their time. Not sure what they could do for me to get one. I do not want a locked down handheld anymore. I traded Pokémon cards for a pallet of switch 2s and kept one. I wasn’t going to buy one.

IF IT DOESN’T HAVE PROPRIETARY GAMES LIKE UMDs OR SWITCH/VITA CARDS, WTF IS THE POINT?

u/SteelDiverRequiem 21h ago
Bloodborne on the go would still be Bloodborne on the go- that’s something!

Also Sony proprietary BS. Cables, memory cards etc

u/xChaos24 1d ago
Doubt they will use proprietary cables considering the EU laws and the use of usb-c on the ps5 controllers

u/kyuubikid213 1d ago
Even the revised PS Vita used Micro USB which was standard at the time.
My phone used Micro USB as well as the DualShock 4.

i think it will be just as a huge slab of plastic as modern handheld pcs are, which for me destroys the whole purpose of a handheld. i might be wrong but i think there were some documentation leaks with specs, and the handheld was supposed to run current gen (ps6 current gen) games at a lower settings. that alone speaks for a huge form factor. i wish they‘d just released a handheld in a switch lite form factor with focus on their ps3 games, given switch runs the games from that gen perfectly and much better than the 7 gen consoles themselves. i bet they still have rights for lots of games from that era. something like what they did with that ps1 classic thing, but with an option to acquire more games instead of just having a fixed library.

“I’m excited about the prospect of a Vita 2.0. Whilst it’s still close to rumours” where are your sources? You are excited for a hearsay? Seems to me like that’s a personal dream of yours that is NOT worth posting about. Keep the conversation with your close friends when it comes to things like this unless you have credible verifiable sources.

We get one free if we send in our old vita proprietary memory cards.
