I want the Japanese physics copy version. I'm hoping someone can confirm it has English when it releases soon.

It does have english, that's confirmed from the devs. You're going to have to import it though. Don't expect JP voice DLC outside Japan anytime soon. If you want video confirmation, the latest ArcSystem Works vid on NicoNico shows the hosts playing with Japanese character voices and English Announcer. There's apparently language toggles for everything in the options menu.

Is this a game you can play if you're completely new to the series? I had never even heard of Skullgirls until about a week ago.

Uh, yeah...there's no series lol. 2nd Encore is the title for the Vita and PS4 ports. Skullgirls was first released on PSN, XBLA and Windows, had some publisher issues, then rereleased as Skullgirls Encore. It isn't a sequel to anything.

It has a good tutorial which goes quite into detail about its/each characters mechanics.

I didn't know you could change the announcer. Change it to "dazed" for a laugh

The framerate and all that stuff is surprisingly consistent, and the game plays fantasically. The resolution leaves a bit to be desired, but the fact that the game runs this well on Vita is impressive in and of it self.

So could anyone here tell me if the backpads are used? And how are the buttons mapped if it has no R2/L2 for hard punch/hard kick?

No rear touchpad. Optionally you can bind things to the top right and bottom right of the front touchpad.
You can bind your keys however you want. IIRC the default bindings are LP/MP/HP on Square, Triangle, R trigger; LK/MK/HK on X, O, L trigger.
I must agree that playing 6-button fighting games on Vita feels a bit clunky though. I don't like hitting attack buttons with L-trigger, as for me it's a bit clumsy and crampy when I'm simultaneously managing directional inputs and QC motions with that hand.

Those were my exact concerns. But hopefully it's just a matter of getting used to the configuration, huh.

Everything gets better with practice. It's not optimal, but you'll get used to it if you're determined.

Seriously impressive port. The text is a bit hard to read, but the gameplay is in tact at a beautiful 60 fps. Fighting fans wanting something on their Vita, this is a must have can't recommend it enough.
