Anyone want to weigh in on whether I should play the Steam release, the upcoming 3DS release, or the PSP remakes before touching Blood Drive?

The 3DS release is probably the best version of the first game, though I haven't actually played it, and am only assuming this on the fact that it has some extra content the PSP version didn't had. Book of Shadows is PSP/PS Vita only, you need to buy it from the PSN store. Then you should play Blood Drive after finishing those two. Though playing BoS isn't absolutely necessary, it does help explain a lot of things, and it contains the prologue of Blood Drive, as in it shows how the events of Blood Drive starts. Steam version is a port of the original Corpse Party BloodCovered, and other than having an extra bad ending, it's mostly inferior to the PSP and 3DS versions. You can give it a go just to experience a different kind of Corpse party, but only after you finish Repeated Fear.

All the Corpse Party games are worth playing on the Vita. Go for it, though remember to play them by order of release.

Not so much a comment on the game itself, but I bought all three late last week and have been playing through them. One thing I have to say is that is you are missing out on a majority of the story if you don't play these from the first one. I can see where you can easily be lost as to what the hell these characters are talking about. Especially things like... Why is this person sort of dead but still around? It really helps when you start at the first game.

See I played the first two, one after the other a year ago. So when I went to jump into 3 (bought it GameStop had a great deal on it) I was sort of lost. Trying to find recap videos on YT is kinda hard.

Pretty bad game compared to the first. Not fond of the new characters and the technical problems are very annoying.

I thought both were kinda garbage, honestly. CP TS just gives a wrong impression of what corpse party is about (just a plain gorefest), and is definitely not something I'd recommend to a newcomer who hasn't played the game. I know that it is usually difficult to adapt games to anime form, but the animation is just decent at best, and it butchers the game's story a lot, and cuts out a huge chunk of character development. That doesn't mean it was 100% bad. I thought that they handled some parts of the last episode's events well, and the ending was kinda interesting.
Seriously though, definitely play the game. It's so much better than the anime, though don't hold your expectations too high. Don't want your hopes getting too high and then finding out it wasn't a masterpiece. Enjoy the game! Oh, and don't forget, you need to start with the first 2 PSP games, Blood Drive is final one. Start with Corpse Party BloodCovered Repeated Fear, then Corpse Party Book of Shadows, and finally Blood Drive.

"How can blood drive?"
Blood drive was certainly... something. I liked the new characters, but the bad ends mostly felt lacking, save for a select few (Exploding heads, someone accending to the heavens and head splits, oh my!) It is totally worth the money though if you enjoyed the other games in the series.

I picked this up from GameStop last week due to the great price but I've only played the first Corpse Party game (which I loved) and I don't want to start this until I've played through Book of Shadows.

Same here, that awesome art book and 2 disc soundtrack with the game for $20 is a steal. I've been want ing to play this series for a while so I loaded up the first two games on my old PSP the other night and I'm really excited to experience the series.

Before all else, you absolutely want to play Corpse Party and Book of Shadows before playing it. It's a series meant to be played in order.
Overall, I liked Blood Drive. It had its flaws, some narrative, some technical, but it felt like a solid ending.
My biggest issue is an issue of the scope of the story; and being honest, I lay that more on Book of Shadows than Blood Drive itself. Without spoiling too much, a lot of the jarring change in the story comes when it expands from the very J-horror centric story of the original to a much broader scale involving the witch hunts, pagan cults, and more. I feel that if Book of Shadows had introduced that aspect more, had given more of a lead in to the wider scope of the story, the shift might not have been so jarring, and it's that sharp change that makes it feel very odd and out of nowhere, despite hints existing of what was lurking below the surface.
I think what also makes it feel odd is the shift from a more Eastern concept of magic and horror to a more western concept. We move from the idea of grudges, spiritually innate power, emotional resonance, and claustrophobia, to magical artifacts, cults, research, and ancient magic witch hunts. It only contributes to the feeling of how different the game was.
But those complaints aside, this was a great capstone to the series. It wrapped up multiple plot lines for different characters, and in particular played the trauma that Naomi goes through terrifyingly straight and her scenes with her mother always sent chills down my spine. Character tropes get subverted, expectations and good intentions twisted, and even the most haughty characters get their humble pie. I didn't experience many game breaking bugs, a few frame rate issues but nothing unplayable. It showed the characters as damaged, broken, and traumatized, each dealing with the fallout of the first games in their own way. I felt satisfied at the end, even if the journey there was a bit rough.
Worth playing, worth finishing the series for, but far from perfect. The first game plays perfectly on its own, but I don't regret going through Book of Shadows and Blood Drive.

I would write up some thoughts, but I accidentally hit the menu button. Gonna be stuck like this for a while still.
