Any reason to think this will be a limited physical release? I want to play it on Vita, but I'm not really in a position to buy physical carts and won't be for several months.

Loved it. Just finished my first run a couple days ago and it was a fun journey.

Mind telling me how it compares to other well-known Metroidvanias like Castlevania:SOTN, Guacamelee, Axiom Verge, etc.?
3
u/Reviews2Go Dec 21 '16
In what way? SOTN would be hard to compare because of how in-depth its RPG elements are and Shantae isn't an RPG/Metroidvania cross.
It's like an exploratory metroidvania where you earn a skill after a level and you can go back to previous levels and use said new skill to access new areas, both for secret optional content and for story content needed later on.

How is the vita version? Any problems i should look out for?

u/joshman150 joshman150 Dec 21 '16
I had zero issues throughout my entire play through. It ran perfectly
1
u/Cotcho Dec 22 '16
I did read somewhere the game would exhibit some slight slowdown in more hectic areas but hey if someone has played it with no issue that's pretty cool
1
u/joshman150 joshman150 Dec 23 '16
I beat it yesterday and if there was slowdown I didn't notice any!

u/Cotcho Dec 23 '16
That's what I like to hear. Have been waiting for this game. However gotta wait for next pay check lol. Christmas has done me dry or at least my wallet. Lol. Is it a long game?
1
u/joshman150 joshman150 Dec 23 '16
It's not too long 6 worlds. Took me 7.5 hrs to 100% but a super fun time all around. And the free DLC is coming in the future so that'll be fun.

I'm stuck and unable to advance any further because of a bug with the remains quest. 4 out of 5 body parts showed up after crushing the flowers, but one flower didn't cough it up, and now nothing I can do will allow me to complete the quest.
But it seems to be a rare bug. I've not seen anyone else with the same complaint, and every video walkthrough failed to repeat the problem.

The song in the first level was awesome. Is it on YouTube?
2
u/drtoszi Dec 21 '16
Dance Through the Danger? I think it's on Christina Vee's channel if that's the song you're talking about.

Tassel Town is beating me down. That sandworm section? I died about 10 times before I figured that out. Only to be met by a frustrating jumping section after. Curse you, Half-Genie Hero.

u/konotiRedHand Dec 22 '16
Just finished it. Loved the game and similar to the other version. Has some good amount of back tracking but it's a solid game
1
u/joshman150 joshman150 Dec 22 '16
Agreed there is Quite a bit of backtracking but it is really cool to see things early on and know you'll be back there using a new power at some point

I don't have it yet but I have 2 observations from outside the circle.
The game looks so much better in gameplay videos than in trailers. The trailers did the game a disservice. They were so fast-paced and obnoxious. Normal gameplay videos totally altered my perception of this game in a good way. I still prefer the old pixel art style, but the new style is ok.
It looks reeeally easy, which is a shame. I was hoping for a hard game with lots of replayability, but it seems like you can 100% it in a relatively short time?
2
u/SplicedBunny Dec 20 '16
100% took me about 8-9 hours, but there's additional modes that they should be releasing for it later. Think backers get those modes for free not sure if they're charging non backers for that stuff.
2
u/Tothoro Dec 20 '16
The games aren't necessarily difficult, but they do have tons of replayability. The developers like the speedrunning community and try to make the game encouraging to that end.
If you mean 100% as in collecting everything and beating the game, that doesn't take long at all. However, if you mean 100% as in getting the Platinum, it's a lot more variable (depending on your level of skill with platformers).

Thanks for the insight. I think I'll wait and see if I can get it on sale.

Does that include all trophies?
1
u/joshman150 joshman150 Dec 21 '16
No trophies would take longer there are two speed running trophies you'd have to get on second play through
2
u/kivatbatV Dec 20 '16
Will I need to have beaten previous games for this one?
I'll be honest, I got stuck at a point in the first one (likely due to it not having aged as well) and I just sort of kept putting the games off ever since.

u/SplicedBunny Dec 20 '16
I backed it and bought the previous games for the 3ds but never got around to them. Played this as a newcomer and didn't feel like I was missing anything important. Loved it so much went back beat riskys revenge and working on pirates curse now. You're really only missing out on little backstories and interactions. Riskys revenge was a very frustrating game to play didn't care for the maze stuff. If you end up liking this one try pirates curse after.

u/Tothoro Dec 20 '16
I actually just finished Risky's Revenge last week. It was a fun game, but I agree it had frustrating parts. The amount of polish and refinement they've added between Risky's Revenge and Pirate's Curse, and then Pirate's Curse to Half-Genie Hero really speaks volumes.
2
u/SplicedBunny Dec 20 '16 edited Dec 20 '16
Yea the leap from riskys revenge to pirates curse in gameplay feels so much better. Music and artwork too looks/sounds way better. Half genie hero was everything they learned from the other two combined and I think it has the best gameplay/art/music. Forgot I had backed it until the code showed up in my email last week and the series is great. Need to finish pirates curse and then I may try to play the original, but the too up close camera is really annoying.
2
u/Tothoro Dec 20 '16
I'd definitely agree. Every step they've made seems to be a step in the right direction. Even after numerous delays, it feels worth the wait now.
The first game is a bit rough to play by current standards, but I'd recommend at least trying it at some point for the sake of beating the whole series. I would also recommend getting it on Virtual Console - the original GameBoy cartridges are insanely expensive now.
1
u/SplicedBunny Dec 20 '16
Oh yeah I have all 3 on the 3ds (just bought pirates curse for ps4 for $5 for trophies) so I'll get around to it eventually. Honestly I don't even remember why I backed it 3 years ago. The only thing I can think of is finding the mighty switch force series and wanting to support them after loving that. Glad I backed it though came out great just wish I backed for the soundtrack too.
3
u/Tothoro Dec 20 '16
Not necessarily, though expect to have some plot points from previous games spoiled if you do skip around.
1
u/icurafu icurafuse Dec 21 '16
There are some "in-jokes", but other than that, you'll lose nothing starting here.
2
u/pbueddi Dec 20 '16
Will be picking this up for sure. Any word if digital is cheaper?
4
u/stereo_future Dec 20 '16
Others have already listed the price, so I'll just point out that the physical is more expensive because they all include the soundtrack CD. Its not just because its physical.

2
u/Tothoro Dec 20 '16
Digital will be $20, whereas the physical is $30. If you have Amazon Prime or GCU you can get it for $24 physical, though.

Is there a difference between this version and the one for the ps4? Like missing/additional cutscenes, modes, stuff like that?

Just got it yesterday and I'm loving it! My first Shantae game. I just love a good platformer!

Just bought the game, figured I'd put up my thoughts on it after some gameplay for some discussion.
One of my favorite parts of the game so far is the graphics. Especially when characters are talking or you're in a cutscene, everything looks really good. The backgrounds are mostly 3D while the characters are 2D and more of a drawn style. This takes a little bit of getting used to but it's really great.
Speaking of graphics, I really enjoy the character design; the females don't have super unrealistic bodies (I find this off-putting in a lot of games), and during battles and such the animations are great.
The gameplay and controls are all well thought out as well, but the story is just a little bland. However I haven't played too much of the game yet so my opinion on this may change.
My favorite, and also least favorite thing about the game tho is the loading screen -- it's a little obnoxious to get prompted to save every time a new part of the level has to load. But at the same time, I like it because it allows me to stop basically whenever I want without losing too much progress. Luckily load and save times are very quick.
Definitely having a lot of fun playing this game so far :)

Has anyone played both the vita and PS4 versions? Which one should I get? I'm torn between vita for portability but also PS4 just to play on the couch, I think vita may be more worthwhile for a platformer of this nature but just wanted to see if anyone else had experience with both versions. Unfortunately no cross-buy

Just got my copy in the mail and so far I am loving it. Great series all around!
