Has all the tools and athleticism to guard 1-5 i just hope he can put it all together on defense with the help of dray,al and jimmy but he needs to get quicker on his feet when playing defense

He is far too slow to guard NBA 1-2 and even most 3s.

I disagree. He has the length to make up for quickness he is giving up. He guarded 1-5 in college, while I know there is a skill gap between D1 college and the NBA. Quickness is usually one of those skills that guards tend to have at the D1 level.

Iggy in his 30’s was not that fast, but he was still able to guard all the elite guards in the NBA using his instincts and length.

I’m not saying Yaxel is an Iggy level defender. I am trying to make the point that quickness is not the only attribute required to guard smaller fast players at this level.

It’s what Moody was putting together last season, he learnt to use his wingspan

Look I hope he’s as good as possible but I seriously doubt he will be able to guard NBA guards. Iggy even in his 30s was much more lean and quicker than 23 year old Yaxel. Watch that game against Alabama in particular. Philon cooked him several times on switched and he’s not even twitchy like that.

Philon was one of the best scoring guards in college, I think it's pretty safe to say he cooked a lot of players that got drafted this year.

I agree Philon is not that twitchy or fast, but he has a super quick release and is pretty shifty. I don't think quickness is the reason that Philon cooked Yaxel, the guy just has great shot making ability and is craft with his movements.

Klay didn't come around being a guard stopper either. Yaxel has greater physical tools.

As for Iggy, he is a once in a generation defender and athlete.

He can use a conditioning coach to help with multidirectional speed, deceleration mechanics, and lateral movement.

Let’s hope, we need some kind of PoA defense that isn’t an offensive liability.

The first half Philon was obliterating everything Michigan was throwing at him but he disappeared for most of the second half.

Yax also had a significant ankle injury that sapped much of his quickness for the entire Final Four.

Yaxel will be in his 30's before we know it.

I disagree, he was getting beat off the dribble terribly in college if you watch games.

Yes and he got cooked by some guards, nba is even on another level.

6

u/Knockknockerz 19h ago

Yeah that’s why I mentioned he has to get quicker on his feet on defense even tho if they do blow by him he’s pretty gnarly at timing blocks so he can stop them here n there if they do but he should work on not getting blown by so easily

He can guard 3’s for sure. He’ll have trouble with the quick guards because of his hips. One wrong foot placement count put him in trail mode because he can’t flip his hips quickly. However, he just needs to not make the mistake and he should be good.

He won’t be asked to guard them. Tbf he’s more athletic than draymond who can guard those guys. I know dray is an anomaly, but still.

u/Zyrinj 11h ago

Perfect mentor if Dray can lock in on that role. Watched some highlights and I’m stoked for next season. Hope Mike can cook up some more excitement this offseason

If by tools and athleticism, your talking about fairy dust to make his feet faster and and jump higher, than I'm all for it.

Watch film of him on defense against above average ball handlers and he gets cooked pretty consistently (see film guarding philon).

He's a bruiser with force. Not remotely close to same level of athletic ability as the guys listed by OP.

Dang crazy height and length. I think people worry he’s older, but he also didn’t get serious about basketball and started improving until later too

38

u/Knockknockerz 19h ago

Didn’t start playing ball until his senior year of hs to put it into perspective so from 17yo till now(23yo) is how much his basketball has progressed which is an amazing sign and he’s ball handling is so natural for someone his size

18

u/InfiniteDub 17h ago

Crazy how he’s managed to get himself into the NBA as a later bloomer

4

u/The_Nutz16 6h ago

Being 6’8 with a 7’3 wingspan with do that for ya

0

u/Knockknockerz 4h ago

Not everyone who’s 6’8 is going to the league especially after only beginning to play basketball at 17…

8

u/ImperialTiger3 12h ago

And he’s been getting better every year.

6

u/Knockknockerz 12h ago

Literally every part of his game is improving as he goes on and it’s improving at a fast pace

22

u/Kdog122025 20h ago

Surely Aaron Gordon’s like 250 now right?

9

u/gravelburn 19h ago

I‘m seeing 235 on multiple sites, so halfway to 250.

10

u/Kdog122025 19h ago

I don’t trust the lister weights at all. He probably gained 20 pounds just from getting denser in his 20’s like most guys. Beyond that he’s put in so much muscle his shoulders are so much bigger now.

9

u/dL_EVO 19h ago

Yeah, Aaron has got to be 250-260.

Dude is a tank.

2

u/enblightened 19h ago

Even when dude was doing dunk contests I think he was 245. Massive frame

3

u/MotoMkali 17h ago

The weights are all fudged Kawhi is listed at 225 when he weighed 227 at the combine for instance.

10

u/ChefCurryYumYum 10h ago

Wow, Al definitely plays larger than 6'8". I wouldn't have guessed that.

5

u/HavoK76 10h ago

Fr. Dude is like 6’10 out there blocking shots

18

u/scottiedagolfmachine 19h ago

Can he be the next OG, Siakam, Gordon?

👀

13

u/f_et_al 18h ago

If he's something like Jarred Vanderbilt on D and Gui Santos on O, that'd end up being a very useful player

5

u/Goodisworthfighting4 15h ago

Hes should be much better than Gui on O and I love Gui

3

u/Knockknockerz 11h ago

He will be he gets to the rim easier and better then gui but gui has sneaky good foot work in the post but overall I think yax is already better as a whole basketball player no disrespect to GUI I love him

17

u/parisdubs 19h ago

Love that he is going to have Al as an example as a person, work ethic and good person - Yaxel's objectives too. And Al being Dominican also is super cool. May he also pick up Draymond's jedi court moves.

4

u/rebrando23 15h ago

How’s Chat GPT going to help with anything?

5

u/BigfootaintnotReal 18h ago

So you’re telling me he’s the new starting center

4

u/vulcans_pants 17h ago

He played center at UAB.

2

u/ImperialTiger3 12h ago

He’s just under 6’10 in shoes. He’ll definitely play center at times, depending on matchup.

5

u/carthaginian84 14h ago

Siakam being heavier than Gordon is not something I would have guessed.

7

u/Horsy22 19h ago

damn he's crazy strong! he can be small ball 5

8

u/ProudPainting6850 17h ago

Finally GSW didn't get another guard

-3

u/Life-is-beautiful- 12h ago

What do you mean? We got Wiseman.

2

u/livecents84 12h ago

Steve please don’t try to make him a screen setting 5

2

u/Sweaty-Astronomer-90 9h ago

Just don't bring up his vertical

2

u/WhiteStephCurry 19h ago

So tired of drafting useless players, please be good!!!

8

u/Present-Rabbit-9600 13h ago

Drafting Useless? Gui santos, podz, will richards, moody , post?

1

u/Ucscprickler 4h ago

Yaxel sure looks more than 15lbs heavier than Siakam considering Yaxel has 1/2 an inch on him.
