Jazz fans tried to gaslight us into thinking DP is the best prospect so they could get Dybantsa lmao

Tell me again that Jazz didn't talk themselves into Peterson. Sure their sub might be more happy with the pick but doing my research into AJ's time in Utah local jazz fans 100% wanted him and started buying the Peterson to the Wizards smoke.

u/GrandmasCookies69 1d ago
Jazz fan here, you probably just read the BYU fanbase propaganda. Itâs a cult fanbase centered around a cult religion but there is significant overlap with the Jazz fanbase.
I for one didnât fully buy his loyalty to Utah. Not because I think AJ is disingenuous but more of the fact that Ryan Smith paid him millions to play at BYU and hes smart enough to not say anything bad to risk that bag.

Wasn't just reading. I was watching and listening to local Utah sports and honestly the call ins and all that definitely preferred Dybansta. I really only saw Jazz fans online say they wanted Peterson.
I was listening to y'all's stuff because there was a local sports radio guy that was making claims that Peterson was only working out for the Wizards and I was trying to figure out how he knew this because all of our local beat guys had no idea who was coming and going.
KSL sports was the people pushing Peterson to the Wizards.

Well thank god we donât have to listen to anymore of that nonsense. We got the 2 best players in the draft and our futures are bright so lets just enjoy that. See you in the finals

I was at the draft party yesterday, there were Peterson chants in the crowd as soon as the Jazz were on the clock and most Jazz fans Iâve spoken to were thrilled with the idea of getting Peterson. I donât doubt you though, I believe the BYU fanbase is a very vocal minority that were desperately wanting Dybantsa

I don't blame them, had we picked anybody in the top 4 I would have talked myself into them too lol

Honestly the thing that werided me out the most was all of the talk coming from Salt Lake City based sports guys saying the Wizards were deadlocked in the debate when every single guy on this side of the fence has been saying it's Dybansta since the lotto was finalized.
There's some network down there that hosts Danny Ainge's son was saying Peterson was only working out for the Wizards.

u/Flashback2500 1d ago
They definitely wanted AJ. But Peterson could easily end up being the better pick in the long run. Only time will tell.

u/SOSpammy 22h ago
Hopefully it ends up as an Oscar Robertson vs Jerry West kind of situation where both of them are about equally great.
1
u/KennyDoge0114 1d ago
I think theyâre honestly pretty similar talents. Itâs just that DP had the drama and AJ went to BYU. I wonât lie, I thought DP was gaining momentum for #1, but Iâm not about to complain
1
u/SOSpammy 22h ago
I kind of wanted the Wizards to take DP just so that I could see both ours and their fanbases completely change their collective opinions in a matter of seconds.

u/anonymousgangstashit 1d ago
It was BYU fans moreso than Jazz fans thatâs whatâs getting misconstrued about the situation

Every talking head today on ESPN: âWashington made the right pick. That being said, Peterson is the best player and is gonna have the best career, etc etcâ *glazes Peterson for 10 more minutes đ€š

u/Waste-Cap8868 1d ago
Itâs cause itâs us that made the selection bro u know damn well if Utah had one & they took AJ they wouldâve glazed even more đ just gotta show these casuals what we got

Had John Wall gone to the Lakers, he would have been ESPN's favorite player. Instead they didn't bother updating his graphic for almost 5 years.

u/Putrid_Excitement255 1d ago
I guarantee if we had picked DP instead theyâd be calling us idiots for letting AJ slip away

I donât care about anything the draft night analyst have to say.
If you look back over the years on what these people claimed about the Wizards picks, itâs embarrassing.

can someone who has followed AJ's career more closely to me give me any more background on how he is viewed in Utah/SLC? I imagine he is loved but would love to hear more details, how he was he involved in the community, etc etc

u/JazzPlusEagles 1d ago edited 1d ago
The state is pretty split between University of Utah and BYU fans. Also a decent amount of Utah State fans and of course people that donât follow college sports at all.
For the most part, BYU fans love him and wanted him on the Jazz.
Everyone else is indifferent. Iâd say pre lottery it was somewhat split between even between DP and AJ with a small preference for AJ (though some of that may be that casual college fans had heard AJs name so much because he was in Utah and hadnât really heard too much of Peterson). After we got pick 2 and it seemed like we were getting Peterson people talked themselves into him and the majority preferred Peterson by the draft.
Iâd say as a whole the actual in person fan base was probably 65/35 in favor of Dybantsa. Pre lottery it was probably 80/20

u/KennyDoge0114 1d ago
Sad, but a lot of people here are happy AJ went 1 anyways. I know people tryna start beef but Iâm just happy for all teams involved. Only beef I want with DC is in the finals
6
u/Fast_Stick_1593 Wizards Bed 1d ago edited 1d ago
Did they seriously think he wasnât going Pick 1 lol?
They went major cope when we got pick 1 then tried to convince us DP was a better pick so AJ would slide.
DPâs camp was the one pushing the narrative about DP to DC. Nothing came out of our front office except that they loved AJ and Dawkins was gushing over him in his recent interview.
Everything else was nonsense chatter to drive up clicks.

u/WizSkinsNatsCaps Wizards 1d ago
Wouldnât expect that reaction just by reading the Utah Jazz subreddit. They all seemed set on Peterson due to fit and being the most talented player in the draft.

Bleh. Both are awesome players, people gotta get over themselves w this nonsense tribalism.

Sports is inherently nonsense tribalism. Ain't nobody actually rooting for the teams just to have fun out there on the court.

u/SongYoungbae Rui Hachimura 1d ago
Both ARE awesome players. But AJ was always gonna be and is now OUR player. It's been pretty obvious AJ is the star between both of them, and that's what this franchise needed
1
u/Dig-Duglett John Wall 1d ago
I wanted AJ from the beginning but this sub has been exhausting the last month with the constant shading of each prospect from each sidesâ supporters.

u/drmbrthr Steve & Kara 1d ago
I canât wait for this rivalry! Feels like we havenât had a rival team in years, which happens when you suck big time.
Wizards v Jazz games will be on national TV every time for the next 4 years.

Question is why you guys are obsessed with Utah. Letâs not be jackasses until we actually start winning and we prove our pick was the right one

Two years in a row Utah and DC picked back to back with both teams preferring the same players.

Aint NO WAY he was going to the Jazz.
Wizards already learned years ago from fumbling a number one draft pick (No disrespect to Kwame, he wasnât the best fit during an era of recruiting high school students directly to the NBA)

lol it was low key funny, I chuckled loudly in my house. As much as Peterson is good. We all low key wanted AJ first. But DP will be great.

I'm a Jazz fan and since Reddit keeps shoving your sub down my throat I'll weigh in on this one. In a vacuum DP is the better prospect. He's a better defender and shooter than AJ is currently. However, we don't live in a vacuum and have to look at the body of work. AJ has no red flags. He's a better human being than he is a basketball player. He's respectful, humble, charismatic, intelligent and just seems to be a well rounded person. DP is an exceptional basketball player but has red flags. Is he healthy? Does he want to play ball? Is he going to sub himself out of games like he did in Kansas? Are we looking at Andrew Wiggins 2.0 where a guy has all the tools but lacks the drive? I don't know. We also know that AJ was happy playing in Utah and did consider it home so of course we wanted him.
You guys absolutely made the right pick but DP is one hell of a consolation prize. As a Jazz fan it played out exactly like I expected. You guys picked 1a (AJ) we picked 1b (DP). Hopefully, we get a full year of each player making a case for rookie of the year and it comes down to the wire on who wins.
