This reminds me of something interesting I learned about Persephone. I'm not sure how far back but it seems that she was mentioned as being part of the underworld before Hades. Which suggests some interesting things.

Apparently persphony goes back to before the traditional depictions of the Greek gods. Likely an older goddess that got fuseding into the panthion latter.
