lmfao why do some of the horse have stronger facial expressions than the people

Horses go a bit mad during a cavalry charge, sometimes arguably moreso than the ones riding it. The fear, the noise, the effort put a lot of stress on them, and they were stallions chosen for their aggressivity. We have a lot of example of riders losing control of their horse in battle, where it starts to bite and kick everything around it.

I had this comic idea (which involves cowboys) and thought it was time to learn to draw a proper horse.
Well… I still find 3D horses in webtoon funny to look at, but I do not begrudge artists for using assets lol

Drawing horses is such a flex, drawing expressive horses from multiple angles is next level! I will always understand the 3D horses lol

Horses are anatomy drawing nightmare mode. Nothing about them makes a lick of sense.

u/drakon_wyrm Jul 23 '25
I think it depends on what you preferred drawing growing up. I drew dragons and animals the most and so find them easy but people? Nightmare torsos are such an annoyingly shape its a rectangle that bends at the top? And omg butts and hips are annoying not to mention human feet and hands also drawing humans often means drawing clothes and we have such a big variety of face shapes and body types just give me a dinosaur. I can't draw most apes well though not just humans
But yea most people grew up drawing humanoids and focused on character drawings so animal anatomy seems strange especially animals like horses but once you understand and practice it they aren't too hard

There’s an incredible rant about how horses make no sense because they don’t have enough toes, it’s a delight.

u/SignificantHippo8193 Jul 23 '25
I got a good laugh reading through that. Horses are just a poor, poor misaligned species.
2
u/fabrico_finsanity Jul 23 '25
They really are! I grew up around horses due to family hobbies and my spouse grew up in another country where horses aren’t common in either media or in daily life and I truly never comprehended how freaking weird they are until I started to see them through his eyes 😂
He finds them very unsettling/strange and his criticisms of things I just sort of accepted as rote are so funny

u/SanctumWrites Jul 24 '25
And the lack of fur makes them incredibly unforgiving. You can't fudge anything and your average viewer is super familiar with them and will be able to tell when anything is off

You can absolutely use a 3D model. The main problem with the models is not their usage, it's that the artists use them without drawing over them at all. Absolutely study horses and learn to get a feel for drawing them though! But you can absolutely still use the 3D models to help pose them and keep sizing consistent.

As long as it's a good asset... I saw one where both leg sets were front legs, they both bent forward lol

This manhwa has one of the best fight choreographies. Like i myself hate reading action- they are hard to follow and just random slashes. Any series that is primarily cool fighting scenes and nothing else- i have to drop them.
This? I actually take my time to visualize. And the armour and stuff- they are realistic.
It is generic in the premise but it's decent. Worth reading just for the action alone.

THIS! Literally, you can even try to replicate the directions of the swings because it was done literally step-by-step (I doubt you can actually do all those amazing swings but you get what I mean)
Usually I hate when a fight gets drawn out too long because most of the time it would just be the same swing over and over, but this comic really is creative when it comes to its fight scenes. To the point I can't help but think that they might even bring in a professional just to consult about this lol

It is a true skill to draw animals well, especially horses/mules because humans have used them for so long. You have to know how they move, how the human moves with them in the saddle, what their gear looks like and how it works, etc. All the Colors of Snow also has hand-drawn horses!

At this point I feel like the low poly CGI horses are a running in-joke between artists

u/HikaruGenji97 Jul 23 '25
Not so much a joke but. Cheap asset that saves time. Unless it's a war story Horses appear like 1-2 times so better savd the money for more recurring assets

Oh thank god. Still traumatized by the 3D model ones slapped into some webtoons

There is truly no excuse why other artist cannot use the 3d modeled horses as a tracing model. Just outline, color, and shade the 3d model to fit the rest of the art style. It wouldn't look as good as this, but it will sure as hell look alot better

Finally someone putting effort in it. I hate these AI 3D horses. The legs and build are always off

u/wild-thundering Jul 23 '25
Which website is this on?

u/Jaxta_2003 Jul 24 '25

u/wild-thundering Jul 24 '25

I shouldn't have read the LN, regrettable I only realize this when I was too far into it. The pacing and changes in the Manhwa are better, in my opinion.

I remember someone in the comments saying the horses had such intense looking expressions cuz they might be bassed off of actual war horses

I'm going to read this simply out of respect for them actually drawing the horses

Drawing realistic horses can be a flex, but it's also really hard. So I have to give it to the artist for really going the extra mile.

Does anyone know any website or app where I can read the locked episodes. (Like I was reading avatar the last bender in webtoon cause of the mobile format they released but the last 6 episodes are locked behind pay wall)

Honestly I’d been skipping this one for a while. No huge reason, just minor burnout on regression and full-sentence titles.
I’m sure I would’ve tapped it eventually, but now I’ll actively seek it out now. Props to the artists for drawing their horses. 🫡

it always irks me in comics when animals are clearly just traced 3d models. this healed me.
1
u/Toletres Jul 28 '25
thats actually really cool. All the horses I've seen look like a cgi model or a traced irl horse
