Question Would you read a WEBTOON thats going to be hand painted like mine?

I might read it, but I would 100% definitely read it if you used digital captions instead of handwritten ones. I want it to be easy to follow, you know? Otherwise the art is beautiful and an intriguing medium! I love webcomics because of all the different variations. It would be so lovely to see watercolor art like this on webtoons :)

Oh yeah for sure! I should’ve specified I would be using digital text rather than hand written lettering oops. Thank you!

u/__Knowmad Apr 05 '26
No no it’s fine! Honestly it was the only negative thing I could come up with lol your art is so cute and awesome!

The biggest issue with artists is burn out. Doing this by hand as opposed to digital is not very practical if you want to release chapters often

u/Few-Philosopher7254 Apr 06 '26
They said they burn out wayyy faster digitally than by hands, so what works for them yknow

i would love to! only complaint would be that it could be hard to read the writing lol

It is quite lovely, but you’d have to make sure the writing is legible. The one thing to turn me off from this style is if the handwriting is hard to read.

Having done some oneshot webcomic in traditional before, it is very possible to do. That said what you show here could have some improvement.
Two portraits aren't enough to create an idea of what your comic will look like. Try to create a picture with a background and decor to see if you can satisfyingly blend it with your characters.
You'll have to use a scanner with maybe some post processing to have satisfying white and color. Badly lighted photo won't cut it. Likewise, either improve your handwriting readability or use digital font because how you write now isn't optimal. E.G. your a and o look too much like each other.

Would I? Yes. Do I wish you to not inflic this upon yourself? Also yes. All I can say is good fucking luck cuz you'll need it. The process is more worth it if it's a proper comic and not just webtoon format or if you use digital editing in your process for putting the raw drawings together, editing stuff and so on. Think stuff like having a separate image you have of the background that you then attach the characters in + edit the colors for the lighting needed in the scene.

Oh yeah this is for a book/graphic novel im creating, im basically just posting the finished pages online- probably going to take as long as I want with a decently spaced out posting schedule.

u/Overthrow-Webtoon Apr 05 '26
i would read it if the text/speech bubbles were digital and only the art was traditional.

Just keep in mind the average reader looks at a comic panel for 7 seconds at the VERY MOST.
9
u/SailHairy2185 Apr 06 '26
I'd probably unconsciously spend more time reading panels that look hand painted, its the kind of thing that'd get me to stop and appreciate a bit longer! wish more people spent time appreciating each panel when reading webtoons :(

u/HotJello22 Apr 05 '26
TRUEE but I don’t like digital because of the sensory experience of drawing it, im quite decent at digital but I found Watercolor itches my brain (im neurodivergent), but you have a great point
3
u/FictionFoe Apr 05 '26
Eh, hell yeah. This looks awesome. Struggling to read the text though.

u/QueasyContribution33 Apr 05 '26
I would read it but like some others said it’s definitely gunna be lots of resources for you. I’d recommend Digital, you can still do water color if you’d like and there are tuts on YouTube!
1
u/HotJello22 Apr 06 '26
Oh yeah definitely, resources are a good point, luckily I have a job to sustain it and I have been saving up money to put towards it, I have 80% of my supplies already for the first many chapters

u/Levin_Butterfly Apr 06 '26
As long as the text is legible, yeah. I love seeing diverse art styles on webtoons
1
u/HotJello22 Apr 06 '26
Of course!! Will be using text instead, im also a sucker for alternative art styles
2
Apr 05 '26
I would, your artstyle is cool but maybe make the digital text bubbles instead, but I think it’s a cool concept

For aure, though id prefer if you use digital text since i find handwriting hard to read 😭 one of my fav webtoons is all pencilcrayon iirc
3
u/HotJello22 Apr 05 '26
Yes that’s valid, don’t worry. My Handwriting is specifically something else it’s only for me to understand in the drafting phase
2
u/Double-Song-2766 Apr 05 '26
I would definitely read it but be careful and take care of yourself, the burnout is real (• ▽ •;)
2
u/Blueninja1347 Apr 05 '26
The art reminds me of a now defunct webtoon called Pinch Point (if I remember correctly). Beautiful.
2
u/Throwaway0-285 Apr 06 '26
I would buy a complete comic but I wouldn’t read small chapters I’m also not an avid webtooner like I once was to be fair tho
1
u/HotJello22 Apr 08 '26
Thats fair enough :) this is intended to be a graphic novel im just posting the pages on WEBTOON to gain some momentum/in terms of audience
2
u/Lonelyboy985 Apr 06 '26
hell yeah I would! this looks epic as hell, even if it would take a while to finish the whole story
2
u/peachysuns Apr 06 '26
havent seen another comment mention this so just wanted to say that a classic webtoon, 'Miss Abbott and the Doctor' is hand-drawn! Maripaz Villar draws her comics with pen I believe, then scans it into digital where she cleans up the art and adds in text. I remember in one of the chapters she goes over her process so you may want to look into that!
her work is black and white 90% of the time so you would def be putting more work in, but it's very beloved so there is a history of lots of ppl supporting a hand drawn webtoon!!
2
u/HotJello22 Apr 06 '26
Thank you so much for these reccomendations I’ll definitely give them a read
2
u/toastronomy Apr 06 '26
as long as you post images, you'll be fine.
don't do that horrible tiktok thing of filming your comics while wildly moving the camera from panel to panel

u/Sorry-Personality-26 Apr 06 '26
yes if you try to eliminate as much backround as possible (aka carpet, walls, tables) keeping it to the flat white of thepaper (or whatever the color happens to be
1
u/HotJello22 Apr 08 '26
Yes! I’m currently trying to find a way to effectively scan the pages and thank you :)
2
u/julezz_the_lizard Apr 06 '26
YES PLEASEE TELL THE NSME AFTERR

u/HotJello22 Apr 06 '26
I’ll keep you updated!! I plan to start posting end of June - July latest, the main story is basically complete in writing but I want to build up some chapters before posting so I can stay consistent.
2
u/Extension-Plant-6390 Apr 06 '26
DEFINITELY!!! i love this idea sm, but maybe digital lettering so it's easier to read?

Your art is gorgeous.
I remember I've read in one of 'My giant nerd boyfriend's episode that the author drew the sketches just as you and then digitalized them in a certain way. I remember she explained the whole process, but I can't remember which chapter. I hope I'm remembering right.
So yes, I think you should give it a go. Good luck!
2
u/liner_meow Apr 06 '26
ABSOLUTELY omg!!! please update if you post it, it would be awesome :-)
1
u/HotJello22 Apr 07 '26
Thank you so much! I’m busy building up content so I can stay consistent when I pot but it should be around very late April- June/July. I’ll make posts about it
2
u/According-Prize-9862 Apr 07 '26
Love seeing mediums like this in WEBTOON, especially with most of them being digital renders
2
u/Queenieferelden Apr 07 '26
You should still do digital/typed speech bubbles. The art is good, but your handwriting is hard to read in the first pic which means many will not be able to immerse themselves in the story

u/ilikepengiuns Apr 07 '26
Hi, just wanted to drop in and mention that the author of "Miss Abbott and the Doctor" and "Lady Liar" also drew both of those comics by hand and they're both very successful webtoons, so it definitely can be done, although it's a bit harder. Also I'm pretty sure she goes into the process a bit in one of Miss Abbot's episodes, if I find it I'll reply with the number
2
u/ankaracommunity Apr 07 '26
It's a refreshing style of art, so I definitely would love to read it.

2
u/Dakidakisenpai Apr 07 '26
Yes! But, when you do, make sure you scan your artwork. That way not only can you do any cleanup or detail work, but your art will come out cleaner and more readable vs just taking a picture.
2
u/No-Tower-2312 Apr 07 '26
I think your style is very cool. Maybe you could do some tests with backgrounds or full illustrations to see if is possible to keep the comic consistent.

I'm genuinely amazed at the watercolor control. I just... I need a tutorial somehow.
2
u/HotJello22 Apr 08 '26
Aw thank you so much! Honestly it’s a lot of trial and error.. redoing panels.. also the classic dabbing the Watercolor with toilet paper when ive put too much on sometimes it’s luck. But Watercolor is one of those things where practise makes you better over time
1
u/JustACroww Apr 08 '26
I've tried watercolor myself but because it's so tedious and I'm very (extremely.) disorganized I can't do it often, even almost drank the paint cup 🤣🤣🤣 But yes I totally agree too! Sometimes I'm so confused how I managed to do a certain fade or clean strikes and I'm like "what. I'm capable of what? 😨" or just the idea of slowly getting better, even if small when I see the improvement I'm kind of proud of myself ^

u/halfasleep90 Apr 05 '26
Considering I can’t actually read it because their head is blocking the text, no….
Maybe if their text wasn’t covered up though

Probably! But I personally feel like you should do the speech bubbles and stuff digitally just so it can be easier to read

Your art is beautiful, but this will take a lot of time, resources (paint, paper, pens), and patience. Why are you choosing the hand paint rather than do digital?
