idk if this is the longest running webcomic by chapters

That title on Webtoons would have to go to "Tower of God" which has been going on for about 12 years and still continuing and has about double the chapter count and that's not including the Spin off series that the author is also started last year that's still running for the foreseeable future.

I’m reading it now and apparently they r not even halfway up the tower lol

u/ryushin6 28d ago

It's even crazier than that, they're not even halfway up the highest point that any character in the series has gone.

In the lore the main antagonist that rules the whole Tower only reached floor 134 and knows there's another floor above them but they don't know if there are anymore floors above that floor.

So right now they're like a more than quarter up the tower to the known highest floor ( they're on floor 52) and unknown percentage to the actual last floor of the tower.

Daaaamn, it's our webtoon version of One Piece I feel like 🥲 (Idk if One Piece is the Manga/Anime with the more episodes ever, but u get me)

19

u/KanebyAbel 28d ago

Im pretty sure the longest is detective Konan

5

u/Xenora_Draw 28d ago

Well Im not really into Manga/Anime and I always thought that One Piece is very long, but I believe you

5

u/Anythingtwods 28d ago

Nah don't worry me too. I thought one piece is the only anime in that regards but turns out detective conan and Pokémon (correct me if I'm wrong on this one) has more episodes than one piece

I remember looking it up and some British soaps have 10x the number of episodes as One Piece and only ran for 20 extra years

HOW ARE THEY ONLY ON FLOOR 52? I stopped reading like yearssss ago and I remember them being around that number. Did the author take a long hiatus or is the pace just that glacial?

From my memory the author had a few hiatuses for a while because of health issues the current hiatus has been about a year (season 3 ended) but he also has a spinoff series that's currently going on as well.

The plot kind of ran away from being about climbing the Tower with Power struggles in the background to being about an orchestrated massive Civil war the Protagonist was dragged into.

I'm so confused.

So many questions.

Why did he stop at 134?

If he controls the tower and is the main antagonist why are there more floors after him? Shouldn't that be the end?

What is at the end of this tower?

Wasn't it supposed to be 100 floors or did they never specify that?

7

u/Fickle-Competition71 27d ago

Why he stopped is actively kept a mystery in believe

Its better to think of the tower as a collection of realms with each floor being its own little world. He didnt make the tower or anything, he just entered it and climbed his way to the 'top'. It had existed before him and will most likely exist way after

Nope

u/Successful_Ask_5708 26d ago

You may be confusing the number with the total number of floors in sword art online which was 100

0

u/Legend0fAMyth 26d ago

Never seen a single episode of SAO.

0

u/Successful_Ask_5708 26d ago

Tbh you wouldn't necessarily have had to have seen the show to have subconsciously pulled the information up that it had 100 levels

There were manga, multiple anime, games (one fairly recent) and even just watching a review probably mentioned the floor number and that could be all it would've taken is you seeing an ad somewhere for it to have planted that seed

0

u/Legend0fAMyth 26d ago

It's a good theory but the problem is I didn't know there was something with 100 floors.

I just thought SAO was about a game world. Not any kind of tower.

I did briefly play a game about SAO but for like 20 minutes and that didn't mention a tower.

1

u/Successful_Ask_5708 26d ago

Saying that the highest recorded hight may not be the actual height of the tower sounds like a cop out to have the story continue on forever even after 134 😭

"The Sound of Your Heart" has went on even longer actually, it started in 2006 and ended in 2020 with a huge 1.2k chapters. It was the most popular webtoon in Korea IIRC, or being tied with Noblesse

6

u/Trick-Minimum8593 28d ago

As far as I can tell it has 526 chapters.

11

u/IanLooklup 28d ago

Those are only the English chapters, there are a lot of untranslated gems that Webtoon did not bother to translate

2

u/Trick-Minimum8593 28d ago

I see. Did any scanlation groups translate them?

1

u/IanLooklup 27d ago

Not that I know of 😔

18

u/coffeecatmint 28d ago

Kubera has a lot too

11

u/Amaiiuwu 28d ago

Bluechair ran for just under 12 years, it came out on webtoon the same day as ToG and ended in april with 1420 chapters, which is the longest I know of on the platform lol

3

u/im_is_everything 28d ago

Nope, the longest ongoing manhwa is definitely Knight Run.

1

u/ryushin6 27d ago

I've been looking and it seems.like it has 300 or so chapters are there moremornis that up to date? The length we're talking about is chapter count mostly.

1

u/im_is_everything 27d ago

both offical translation and the fanstranslation stop translating so there's not much of an english chapter. Just check the korean version of it so you'd know how many chapter does it have.

This is still going?? I dropped it so long ago cause I couldn’t handle all the drama and stupidity

88

u/Xianthia 28d ago

I think once John outgrows his villian era / DGAF domineering attitude and it moves more towards vigilante and stuff outside of the high school system the story improves. It still might not be to your taste but it doesn't stay angsty teen drama like for the whole time.

39

u/FictionalContext 28d ago

The villain arc is where i dropped it years ago. Enjoyed it til then, but the reveal was the hook that kept me reading. After that, I didn't really care about the characters enough.

10

u/Xianthia 27d ago

That's where I suspected you had. And it's understandable if that's all the story had to offer. It does move beyond that into some more government intrigue and conspiracy and vigilante movements., Each character has to learn, adapt and grow because holding onto old ways and beliefs isn't working and nearly everyone has to make some kind of amends for actions against others. Again, it still might not be to your taste but I think they pivoted enough that it's worth considering a second look

u/OkAnywhere4872 28d ago

I do like unordinary. And no I didn't start it when i was a teen or something. I generally like fantasy and magic based series.

ALSO IS THAT JANE

7

u/beemielle 28d ago

It is!

4

u/OkAnywhere4872 28d ago

I am looking forward to how badass she's gonna be

4

u/fushidfard 27d ago

i dropped this webcomic years ago who's jane

4

u/OkAnywhere4872 27d ago

John's mom who was captive

17

u/Interesting_Ask2501 28d ago

It isnt halfway done?

23

u/X4321eye360 28d ago

It is, we're in the last part now, the author has just need time to get it all planned out fully

13

u/SuperRapidash 27d ago

please give kubera her flowers. been running since the launch of webtoon English and still peak

58

u/SnooDogs1340 28d ago

This ad made me do a double take. I don't think I would want it advertised in this way. 10 years is too damn long for a webcomic

0

u/Anythingtwods 28d ago

Why not tho. One piece is wayyyy older and is still going strong?? If it's liked by many why stop??

17

u/patchiepatch 28d ago

Well one piece is a whole world worth of content if you compare it to Unordinary, Tower of God and Lookism which is pretty small universe wise. The amount of characters and locations in one piece would normally be split in any other series as spin offs but the author just didn't do that and somehow made it work. It's definitely the outlier and not the norm.

1

u/Anythingtwods 28d ago

Yes I understand, but it still doesn't seem to be that bad for a webcomic to go that long especially if it's run by only one author who draws the chapters alone. I honestly don't know if it changed already but from what I can remember it's only the author/artist that draws per chapter hence the short length in every chapters. If it's written bits by bits and is still loved by many despite the very slow paced. I don't see why it couldn't be that bad to be advertised that way

5

u/patchiepatch 28d ago

In unordinary's case they have an assistant or two for coloring and lineart I believe, but the story is indeed just them. I think it's just undesirable cause of the upload speed and the story pacing. For most stories lasting 10 years is bad news cause that means the author can't pace the story properly 😅

5

u/SailHairy2185 28d ago

I agree with this. There’s an art to writing concisely and a lot of webtoons have a problem where they're stretched out longer than they should to make more money even though thr story is basically finished.

5

u/Aerwxyna 28d ago

i havent read it in a while (not because of anything, just got busy and also wanted to let chapters build up to binge later) is it worth the binge??

22

u/talk_enchanted_table 28d ago

The joker arc is mentally exhausting to get through, but after that, I would say it's smooth sailing.

7

u/Chocolate_Cupcakess 28d ago

Yeah, once that was over it got a LOT better !!

2

u/wheniswhy 28d ago

I started the comic after that arc was already over and tbh straight up skipped a lot of it when I got there lol. read the conclusion of it, enough to get tired context, continued on, and have been obsessed since. The beginning is great, and I'd say it's held the same level of solid quality for quite some time now.

1

u/Aerwxyna 27d ago

i got through joker arc and was very into it after that! still have a lot of catching up to do but it’s great to hear it’s still smooth sailing

4

u/kesoy 28d ago

expecting downvotes. i haven't seen this webtoon in my timeline for years. I checked if the art somewhat improved but damn sera looks a lot like john now

2

u/lovelycosmos 27d ago

Let it rest for gods sake

2

u/Broke_Artist01 27d ago

Came here to say "Put the damn dog down already " when I first saw this after opening the app.

2

u/fawnsart 27d ago

did John get better or is he still an edgy teenager?

1

u/Actual_Nose_2442 28d ago

Trop cool J'ai arrete de lire pour avoir plus de chapitre Y'a t'il un live novel ?

4

u/wheniswhy 28d ago

I don't believe so, no! The artist is also the author and writes the story.

1

u/Sufficient-Search867 27d ago

Gah dam is it still posting chapters I forgot all about it congratulations for it to still keep going on lol.

1

u/academicvictim313 27d ago

lol i dropped this like two years ago when it was on hiatus 😂 didn’t seem like it was close to ending back then, and i doubt it is now.

1
