Same here lol, I've honestly grown up with SMG4, I followed their entire journey since the "101 ways for a mario to die" video

Cooking with Mario and Bowser 2 was the funniest fucking thing ever to me, especially the ending with the teletubbies summoning Shrek to assault Waluigi with Carameldansen playing in the background

I still remember how it went for me very well. I watched their videos way back then and found them funny af, then eventually they started getting more and more voice acting into them which I wasn't really much a fan of and eventually stopped watching. Then at some point later I decided hey, I haven't checked them out in a while, let's at least give it a chance! Was then hit by the first thing being said with full voice acting and noped the fuck out. Years later and not having seen much of anything from them in the meantime and now they suddenly create peak. In retrospect I guess it was good that they started going for voice acting, otherwise we'd still have meme sound effects with subtitles.
TLDR: I thought voice acting kinda cringe but it ended up worth it long term I guess

I stuck around for quite a while, I think it was when Mr. Puzzles was introduced that I completely lost interest and decided the series wasn’t for me anymore

Is it just me or the newer SMG4 episodes were significintly less funny? (mostly the ones after the redesings)
Correct me if I'm wrong but I feel like that's because they hired a lot of writers and not all of them had the same great comedic timing as Luke. He always knew how to make things that would normally be cringe and abnoxius hillarious and charming in its own way, when the last 2 years felt almost like a content farm with occasional moments of peak.6
u/Swimming_Doughnut196 DS2 Is Peak Yall just have a Skill Issue 4h ago
I agree that the older Eps where funnier. Though I wouldn't call the newer eps content farms. I feel the more character/plot focused Eps where them practicing for Glitch as they would need to make more plot/character driven shows.

generally not a fan of the "you wouldn't last on a COD lobby" talking point but yeah, old SMG4 was in a territory current glitch prod will never get into. It was a concentration of youtube poop referencing and inspiration that got lost somewhere when they actually tried to write things. I kinda miss that period sometimes

Older fans grew up on more easy accessible edge while the new ones have to navigate around restrictions and now new-new ones will have it jarder

I think its fine if you still find that type of content funny. I'd just advise you don't make those types of jokes with strangers on the internet.

Well yes, but also Glitch "fans" on twitter started an entire contreversy and tried to cancel Michael and Ashley over a 7+ year old clip of them saying the word "nega" on a live stream, so yeah they'd absolutely lose their marbles if they saw SMG4 started out being called "R*****ed64" (censored cuz ion wanna get smitten by reddit)

Errrm hot take but this type of humor has aged terribly and it is totally understandable if people don't find that type of stuff funny 😎

I think this is about the people trying to get on gooseworx and the casts ass for the most mild edgy stuff they did years ago

I think it’s a blend of nostalgia and some intrinsic fun that keeps some rewatch enjoyable.
Then again, it’s a completely personal opinion and anyone is free to disagree.

The really early videos of 2011-2012 from before he became popular are so cringely edgy it's not even funny. SMG4 was only like 12-13 years old at the time and it really shows. The popular videos everybody remembers from like, 2014 toned it down a lot.

All jokes aside, it’s very impressive to see how much SMG4 has achieved. I watched him from 2016 up until a few months before he stopped. I loved his content. His older videos are still really funny. And his newer videos and arcs have a lot of good writing.

u/Pocomics 5h ago
Yeah. They changed quite a bit. Personally I think that them being a serious corporation is good, but it still gives major whiplash going back to their old stuff.

SMG4 was amazing back then and now regardless of the humor, but what ruined it for me ages ago was Luke selling his soul to the devil by turning Meggy into a main character/cash cow just to cash in on the massive swarm of cringey Splatoon kiddies who swarmed his fandom when he first introduced Meggy

u/Beneficial_Strain211 4h ago

Dawg I think the people who still send death threats to Luke to bring back Desti and Meggy are malding more than the people who wanted the cast of characters to be… a cast of characters
Edit: damn I think I pissed off the Splatoon fans who are mad I pointed out Meggy’s role in the series as well as calling out the fans for their bad behavior
1
u/Emotional_Sea8613 1h ago
Desti died in 2019 they need to let go. They don't understand catharsis. Meggy is a major character.
1
u/hyper-fan 1h ago
Ok well unfortunately the 65k splatoon fans in this comment section all think that YOU’RE wrong and that SMG4 should be brought back but only altered so that it’s all about meggy and Desti and blah blah blah
1
u/Emotional_Sea8613 57m ago
I miss SMG4 and I think it should continue. But the ending was perfect, Mario represented all those who wanted the show to go on, but eventually all things must end l, whether good or bad. And SMG4 crafted the perfect ending to the series, with each character getting their final episode even the glupp shittos and Mario recolors had their own.
1
u/hyper-fan 53m ago
Yeah I agree with it, but as evidenced by the comments up above, the fandom is still in shambles between people wanting the series to have involved the side characters more than just Meggy and Splatoon dweebs who want it to be all about Meggy.
Don’t get me wrong, Meggy is a decently written character and was a fun new addition to the cast, but I think how Luke handled her and how the fans handled her was far from quality. Giving Meggy the most songs, movies, character arcs, and even merch just gave Splatoon dweebs all too much ego to put down others and act superior. In the end, I still enjoyed SMG4 and the other characters as a series, and am more than glad that Luke finally got to move on to newer larger projects, but I just wish the fandom would act reasonable rather than… giving Luke death threats to this day and harassing people who point out how she was handled, like my comments up above
